Only reason i upgraded is got the itch while prices were low (back then) to build a 3900x rig.2600x still runs great today for everything you would need for daily tasks, kids gaming, etc. Will STILL run all modern games at a slightly lower frame rate (older architecture) A 3600/3700x would be a good upgrade or buy today for around $179 or less (if i was buying this today)

It's quiet and my temps sit around 30deg idle and 45deg under load. The CPU area of the motherboard is visible in my case through an open grate on top, but you still can't hear the CPU fan. So call that a "win" as well. For the sake of being fair, the only thing I "lost" in upgrading to this processor is my ability to run Apple OSX10.X Virtual Machines in VMWare due to it not being an Intel processor and Apple having no real AMD support beyond video cards (that I want to bother with). But chances are 99% of you aren't doing this. I'm barely doing it myself anymore...And I didn't have massive success overclocking this processor. To be fair, I didn't try hard so YMMV. But turning on a 4.05ghz "Game Mode" overclock from my motherboard resulted in a Windows hard lock. But as stated, I'm using the stock cooler and didn't try dialing in fine tuned settings in the BIOS.If you're trying to build a cheap "mid range" system, consider this part.

Fantastic price to performance
20 April 2019

It and its slightly weaker version are at the time of this review the best price to performance processors out there. Able to run anything you want with superior multi-threaded ability over Intel. HOWEVER the single threaded performance isn't as strong. Certain games do like single threaded performance more than multi-threaded so for certain titles like Pubg, Counterstrike, and Apex Legends you'll want Intel instead. But with the recent reveal the new PS5 will be Ryzen based its likely things are going to swing back the other way and games will be better optimized for multithreaded performance. Incredibly nice stock cooler is a huge plus too. A bit big though, make sure to install your ram BEFORE installing your CPU.On a side note you will want to do some research ... MoreIt and its slightly weaker version are at the time of this review the best price to performance processors out there. Some RAM simply refuses to work at advertised speeds with certain motherboards and Ryzen. If you don't like the idea of flashing your bios you might want to choose something else. Ryzen LOVES fast ram and you'll gain significant bonuses from it. If the ram is still at 2400mhz over an advertised 3000 you could be losing quite a bit of performance.

First AMD build since the Phenom II days

Coming from an i5-4670K, this CPU doesn't exactly offer earth shattering improvements for my uses at gaming and common tasks. I was gonna wait for "Zen 2" coming next year, but an unplanned event forced my hand. Since I primarily game, the numbers would point out that I needed to buy an Intel Coffee Lake CPU, but I'm a little weary of Intel's grip on the CPU market and the resulting complacency. The performance advantage Intel currently has is MUCH smaller than it was when I built my last PC in 2013. Haswell completely crushed all of the Bulldozer/Piledriver FX chips across the board, which is how I ended up with an i5. Things have changed. Haswell completely crushed all of the Bulldozer/Piledriver FX chips across the board, which is how I ended up with an i5. Things have changed. Intel's IPC advantage is small (`10% at best) and frequencies are respectable for Ryzen , though Intel still has a sizable advantage there as CL CPUs have a much higher clock ceiling. Toss in the fact I'm gaming at 1440P, and the performance between AMD/Intel is pretty much on par with each other. Plus, for "i5" money, you're getting 6 cores/12 threads versus 6 cores/6 threads on the Intel side of things. No, those extra threads don't do much for gaming at this time, but having that extra compute grunt is not at all a bad thing. AMD has finally gotten off their lazy backsides and re-introduced actual competition to the space! Coffee Lake is for sure a competent competitor, but that's the point, isn't it? One last positive point to make is the AM4 socket and chipsets for Ryzen CPUs will remain viable until at least 2020 according to AMD. If Zen 2 comes out and cranks it out of the park with 7 nm and an overhaul of the Zen uArch, all one has to do is purchase the new CPU, perform a BIOS update on their current board, take out previous CPU and drop in new one! This is something Intel has not been good with at all, even when their socket remains unchanged. They'll just "require" a new chipset, so current board owners are out of luck. Having an upgrade path is nice. All in all, a great value and beastly CPU for gaming, production, and everything else. Definitely worthy of consideration for anyone looking at a new build.

Owner for almost 1 year. I was on X58/1366 for 10 years, i7 920 from 09' to 15' then figured out the deal with the cheap used Xeon's. Long story short, I should've waited a few more months. Built right before AMD 3k series dropped, thought I was buying smart picking this at the end of the life cycle. The current prices of this chip and 3k series equivalent proves me wrong. I carried over my then current GPU (Tri-X OC 290) so I could directly compare the CPU/RAM upgrade. From a gaming standpoint, there wasn't much improvement. Biggest improvement overall was encoding MP3 to FLAC, which gave a massive reduction in encoding times. With that being said, if you're building your first machine or if you are on something that doesn't perform well these days, this CPU is a absolute steal. AM4 still has a while before EOL and you'll be able to game on this platform for many years to come. If you want bang for your buck, AMD is where it's at right now. The only hard decision about this chip is choosing which motherboard/chipset to go with, newer is probably best if you plan to keep it. Might not sound like it but I was glad to make the switch, AM4 overall has a lot of newer features that you either can't get or have to spend extra upgrading an old system. Gen 3/4 PCI, native USB 3, NVMe to name a few. It's an all around better and modern platform with an upgrade path going forward. Same couldn't be said about my old rig. Some say buy a PC to last 5 years, but with AMD Ryzen and Radeon Parts driving prices down it makes more sense to save money up front. Finally, Micro Center has a good selection with competitive prices especially with bundle deals. I did have some compatibility issues with some parts (RGB RAM not compatible with MB native software) but satisfaction guarantee return/exchange policy makes PC building worry free.

I have two PC build using this AMD Ryzen 5 2600X 3.6 GHz 6 core AM4 processor. I know that there are the 7 and 9 series with up to 16 or more cores, but this one was half the price I paid for it a year ago, and it is plenty fast. I am not using it for gaming but for heavy graphics, artwork, photography, music (both recorded and written using music scoring software), and video to name a few things. I like to stay just a little behind the latest technology in order to save money but still get what I want. PC building has become much more expensive with the new technology, but one can do so much more than 10 or 20 years ago. However, it is hard to keep a build under $1,000 and still do everything ones wants to do. For me, the day of the $400 build is gone. This CPU comes with a fan driven heat sink, but it runs hotter than the older AMD processors. I am using liquid coolers on both of them to promote longer life. I can get temperatures down from 60 - 70 C to between 30 - 40 C and occasionally below 30 C under light load. I've never had a processor fail, but as the wattage increases, I believe that excess heat might shorten the life of them now. I'm also not interested in overclocking them. Yes, you can get 4.2 GHz over 3.6, but I don't need it and it can easily make your system unstable if you don't know what you're doing. (I still remember my first Apple Macintosh II back in 1990 with a 16 MHz processor!) And I don't want to spend a fortune on a monstrous liquid cooler trying to keep it alive, either. If you're into gaming, that's a different situation. You'll need to do all those things that I'm not willing to risk or pay for.

Cheaper than Intel. Runs just as well (And sometimes better) as Intel. More user-friendly than Intel. Not a lot to gripe about here. I couldn't be happier with my purchase. An amazing buy at $189.99 in 2018. Do yourself a favor and go with AMD if you choose to build a PC unless Intel decides to do some groundbreaking stuff in the coming months. I will admit that- depending on your case and motherboard- the CPU fan is a pain to seat properly onto the CPU. I actually had to wipe off the pre-applied thermal paste and re-apply my own because I could not for the life of me get one of the screws to start, and I ended up messing the stuff that was pre-applied up by trying to re-seat it after pulling it off.. Now that I have experience building, I know that those suckers ... MoreCheaper than Intel. Runs just as well (And sometimes better) as Intel. More user-friendly than Intel. Now that I have experience building, I know that those suckers actually require a good bit of force to mount! Besides that, installation was a breeze. Once I got everything up and running, I did (light) benchmarks and found out that I have PLENTY of overhead to overclock if I choose to, because my CPU was running at an amazing sixty degrees Celsius- Well within the manufacturer's rated temperature ceiling. Good luck and happy building out there!

The AMD Ryzen 5 2600X 6-core processor belongs to the second generation of microprocessors based on the "Zen" architecture. With the "Zen+" processors of the Ryzen 2000 series, AMD continues the success of the first generation of "Zen" microarchitecture. Under the code name Pinnacle Ridge, the Texas chip manufacturer is releasing the second wave of its high-end processors and knows how to convince with various optimizations. The processors, which continue to be based on the AM4 platform, bring higher clock rates, an improved boost function and the enhanced automatic overclocking function XFR2 into the field to once again make the competition fear.
