First impressions are great cushion without bulk, but still have adequate protection from rocks. I train on the Appalachian Trail in PA, so there is no shortage of rocks and roots. They have really good traction when climbing and descending. I have only run in them a few times, but recently did an 8.5 miler with close to 1000’ of elevation change and felt really confident in these shoes. The only part I’m not sold on is the laces. They have a speed lacing system that is difficult to get just right to start. Although the laces do seem to even out as you run. I may end up replacing with standard laces.

The tongue is DUMBO huge; why? 2. the Lacing systems, while good in concept, needs sorting out. It needs flatter, less "cutting over the foot" laces (1) and (2) also needs an extra eyelet towards end of the tongue to have true lock-down at the heel that doesn't cut across the foot. I've sorted out the lacing, enough, to make them usable. But this is such an "almost-great" trail shoe. The grip is insane, love the rocker feeling, it's a substantial shoe that somehow magically feels faster and like it WANTS to go fast. I LOVE them! I seriously cant rave about them enough. MY 1st serious pair of road running shoes were Trabucos, back in the 90s and they were great. I run road in ASICS, but use a variety of other brands for Trail. These Trail shoes were recommended to me in a Trail running forum, and I took a chance again. WOW, they are great! 50+ miles and fell & look good as the 1st mile. No issues with running on rocks, mud, road transitions, and they clean & dry well too. I wear wides, so order mens & I have no issues, just enough room!

I have flat feet and ASICS are the only brand that fit. I have a pair of trabuco 9 gtx that fit nicely (even though the gtx treatment renders the upper brittle, making it tear after only a couple of months use). I assumed the max would also fit.... The elevated sole has a chamfered rim between the upper and sole to give the extra height and cushioning BUT this means that the toebox is now too narrow for my feet. What a fail! Why don't ASICS make trail shoes for pronators? Double fail. This critical review is highly likely to win the prize draw. /s

Over 500 miles through the desert on the Pacific Crest Trail. These shoes were perfect for the desert. The top mesh was breathable but not so much to let a lot of sand and dirt into the shoe. The MAX cushioning was very comfortable on the rocky trail portions. The speed lacing worked great and tucked nicely into the tongue up under my gaiters and stayed snug all day.One issue I had was after around mile 100 the toe cap folded in and would not pop back up but it did not cause any toe issues since I had sized up my shoe size. After mile 450 I compared my Asics shoe condition (tread life and over all condition of the top of the shoe) to the large amounts of Hoka's and Altra's. These shoes were much too narrow for my feet, so I returned them. In the past, I always fit comfortably in the men’s D or regular size. These days, it seems that ALL shoe manufacturers are making the “D” size narrower. In some cases, I have found even the EE Wide sizes narrower. ASICS’ policy of allowing you to return shoes that do not meet your needs is stellar. Obviously, it’s difficult to gauge whether or not the shoes will fit comfortably when purchasing online. Beyond that, I wish ASICS would make more waterproof selections. Some of us are consistently running or hiking on wet terrain.

The trails were quite muddy, and as I expected the 4mm lugs weren’t enough. They are not meant for mud.I tried similar shoes, from other brands and with similar stack height I found them a bit unstable in more technical terrains, but this is a personal issue (I do pronate a bit).After only a couple of runs is soon to say this but, I had some issues with the “speed lacing system”, I had to stop many times to readjust them, and sometimes had too much pressure. Have just finished my first run with 16km (10mi) uphill on gravel and trail.My first pair of trail shoes ever, so cannot compare directly to other trail shoes. Compared to my Mizuno Wave Rider Neo 2 they feel a bit slow, but those are semi-fast pavement/asphalt shoes, so as expected.The Trabucos are VERY comfortable and not too soft insole wise so they do not feel too plushy and dead slow. They are however super soft and bouncy from the midsole. Great grip. Stable as well. All in all a very comfortable and good shoe, but I did not get the «WOW»-feeling from my first run.I have seen reviews that people are not happy with the lock down and that the ankle area feels loose. Same experience here, but the shoes did not slip while running.
