The ASRock B550 EXTREME4 is a feature-rich motherboard that offers plenty of connectivity options and support for the latest technologies. It has ample space for expansion and supports high-speed memory and PCIe 4.0 for faster data transfer rates. The build quality is excellent, and the BIOS is easy to navigate. Overall, this is a great choice for anyone looking for a high-end motherboard at a reasonable price.

I really wanted to like this board because it had everything I cared about on it, but there were to main issues that ultimately led me to return it. The first is that the driver support for the onboard audio is not up to par with other manufacturers. Everyone essentially runs the same Realtek chip, but the drivers can be customized a bit to get different functionality. ASrock doesn't seem to have done much of anything in this regard, so things like input detection, splitting front from rear audio out, etc., do not work. The RAM I was using was initially detected as 2133 mhz instead of 3600, and I had to set it manually to the proper spec. Finally I found that in general the temperature of the CPU was a bit high on this board (maybe on the order of 5C or so) which caused the fan to spin up even while idle about once a minute, which was annoying. This does not happen on another board I am using.

Beautiful board, but less than ideal for a new build if you want to build it yourself.

I got this board because I wanted a machine that was both powerful and aesthetically pleasing. This board delivered, but it was a bit of a pain to finish building. The description on the product says that it "may" need a bios flash to be compatible with newer ryzen processors, and mine indeed did. Problem was, with no manual bios flash feature you need to get into the bios to do it, which you can only do if have a 3rd gen ryzen processor installed first. So my options were to buy another processor or take it to a computer shop that would hopefully charge less than the cost of such. So I bought a second processor, flashed the bios, installed the newer one without incident and now have a second processor that is of no use. Anyway, this board is great when its all set ... MoreI got this board because I wanted a machine that was both powerful and aesthetically pleasing. Disappointed
1 February 2022

I was looking forward to getting a build together and everything worked fine until there's nothing showing up on display. Did access, downloaded the bios to USB and plugged into computer, nothing. Plugging to the lan/internet, nothing. Changing the RAM around to certain slots, nothing. Switching the M.2 card to the other slot, nothing. Reseating the entire motherboard, CPU and fan, nothing. Further along the lines to show bios menu up on the monitor, still the problem. Even switching cables to connect to the monitor doesn't work. This motherboard has been a hassle for since I received it and read that it needs to be updated for the latest Gen of CPU. I have no other leads, it just makes my new tower nothing but a giant paperweight. Excellent motherboard, good looking, good price!
29 December 2020

Overall this is a pretty good motherboard. Amazing looks, with good quality power phases and excellent VRM heat dissipation. Running a 5600X with no issues at all. - The RAM slots are tricky though. They did not post when using a 3600Mhz 2x16GB KIT in A1+B1, but it did post when I changed the slots. This did not happened with my old 2666Mhz kit. So, if you're planning to get 4x8 or more, try to use the QVL approved sticks, otherwise YMMV. - ASRock Polychrome did not work when installing the latest stable build. They did work when installing Beta. Razer Chrome integration do not work at all. Not a dealbreaker though. - Cheapest board with postcode and power/resset buttons on BIOS. No BIOS flashback though, although mine came with BIOS 1.20, minimum needed for Ryzen ... MoreOverall this is a pretty good motherboard. Good for the price but required bios update
2 April 2022

Got this for a 5800x build and everything went well until I decided to add more ram. The system booted and worked fine with 2 sticks of 8gb ddr4 3600 with XMP enabled. A month later I decided to add 2 more sticks of ram the system decided not to boot. The ram was not a 4 stick matched kit but I did make sure to get the same part to make sure all 4 sticks are the same. After trying to troubleshoot the PC I emailed ASRock. They recommended a BIOS update that fixed the problem.

One of the most beautiful motherboards on the market
7 August 2020

I chose this for my first computer because of its b550 future-proofing compatibility and its excellent design. It's too early to say how well it holds up in the first category, but it outshines the competition (literally) in the second. This motherboard has so far performed excellently in every regard. It was easy to insert into the case, mainly because of the preinstalled IO shield (something I didn't even consider when buying). This IO shield is also actually decorated in a silvery blue finish to match the rest of the motherboard, and looks beautiful in a black case. There's also generous RGB lighting on the armor on the top right and bottom left on the case, which helps light up the areas inside the PC which don't usually get much lighting except from fans. This defaults to shifting rainbow RGB rather than the blue color shown on the box-- there's definitely a way to change this; I haven't done it yet. The silver armor itself is quite cool as well. There are 6 case fan connectors spread around in convenient spots and 6 SATA ports (two will disable if you connect a second m.2 SSD). Additionally, there are power and reset switches on the bottom of the board, with an LED debug screen as well, which proved somewhat helpful, although the motherboard manual didn't seem to include the diagnostic codes shown at one point so I had to look it up. All in all a choice I am very happy with so far. This review is for the Asrock review rebate program.

So Far So Good

For those of you wondering about the holes in the IO shield for Wifi, after purchasing a M.2 Key E Wifi module, you will need a Wifi antenna connector cable that leads from the chip to the IO. After that just get any wifi antennas and youre good to go. For a visual aid, go look up that gigabyte BT + Wifi card and examine the connections. I haven't done it yet, but gonna try soon. I paired this board with a Ryzen 5 3600; Runs famously. I have a Cryorig H7 cooling my CPU; it should be noted that I ran out of thermal paste so I mixed CP11 with CP9 paste and went with it. I might've messed up the thermal paste application. I ordered some MX4, and have yet to change out the paste. I don't like how at idle the voltages and temps are a little to high for my liking. On Ryzen Master Im seeing idle temps at 50C at aprox 1.32V By Idle I mean at the desktop with Wallpaper Engine + ICUE + MSI AB + RiviaT When I turn everything off, idle temps fall back to 44C and voltage falls between 1.2 - 0.9 volts. I did some research, and apparently it's normal for 3rd Gen Ryzen to run like this. Under load, temps go up to 75C and voltage goes between 1.34 - 1.39 volts.

Solid, feature-rich board with minor flaws
6 July 2020

Overall, this is a great board with some minor flaws. The positives: This board feels very solid compared with OEM boards that I had in the past. It feels heavier than the other ATX boards that I had, so I would be very careful while moving this board around. ASRock recommended using slot A2 and B2 for the best performance. This also leaves enough space for relatively large heat sink with front fan, such as Cooler Master's Hyper 212. It has eight USB ports in the back panel and supports one front-panel USB-C port, which is very nice. It has six SATA ports and two M.2 ports, which gives enough room for extra storage space (some SATA ports shares lanes with the M.2 ports). It has a CPU absorption panel in the back which is also part of the heat sink mount. The RGB will light up once the power is plugged in. It's not a lot and the light is often blocked by my heat sink and graphics card, but it still looks very nice. The negatives: The PCI-E x1 lanes are located right under the PCI-E x16 lanes, separately. This means that if you are using two large graphics cards for crossfire and each can take two slots of space, then the x1 lanes will be completely blocked by the graphics card. As a result the Wi-Fi slot will also be covered by the top graphics card. The I/O shield has two open holes for wi-fi antenna, but this board does not come with Wi-Fi. Not sure what's the purpose of these holes, and I haven't found any documentation on how to use these holes. The board works well with most of my peripherals other than my mechanical keyboard, which is Hyper X Alloy FPS pro. This keyboard works fine with other Intel and AMD PC that I had, but not with this motherboard. Particularly, the USB somehow does not recognize this board and keeps plug and unplug the keyboard every few minutes. I thought it was the keyboard issue and I updated its firmware and driver, but still couldn't resolve the issue. Then I connected this keyboard to the USB-C port through an USB to USB-C adapter and it worked well. However, those USB ports on the board works fine with other devices such as mouse, regular keyboards, flash drives, etc. I guess this board and the keyboard just don't like each other for some reason. Overall I am very happy with this purchase and would recommend this board if you are looking for a solid B550 board with relatively rich features and solid build. This review for ASRock review rebate program.
