As far as today’s dongles go this thing sounds fantastic. I’ve had them all and this holds its own with everything. I don’t really use blu tooth much but it works well. All this said, they definitely spent all the $ on the sound because it feels very cheap, particularly compared to any other AK product I’ve ever owned.

I picked up the HB1 to pair with a Sennheiser IE600 as a portable head-fi solution for international travel with just a carry-on backpack. While there were reviews online with solid information, I bought these without testing as I live overseas. Compared to other Astell & Kern products the build quality feels lesser (perhaps due to the light weight) and is one of the first things you notice when you take it out. The volume knob is incredibly useful, but because of the feel of the exterior and the step increments, does not give the same experience as their DAPs. However, there is a positive to the build, with the small size and weight meaning it is easy to pocket and barely noticeable. This obviously means it is more transportable and functional for my use case. As noted in the other reviews, the sound quality is outstanding. The balanced output drives the IE600s to perfection, being incredibly dynamic and resolving. They are enveloping, and I love listening to this combination before I go to sleep in the evenings. I'm happy to make a build quality trade-off to get the higher SQ at this price point. There is a noticeable difference in detail between USB and LDAC when listening in a quiet environment, so I often find myself mostly plugging in via USB for the resolution. I use LDAC when moving about as I hate using dongles with my phone in my pocket, which is why I picked up the HB1 over a normal dongle in the first place - flexibility to use both forms. The microphone works really well, but I find the audio being piped through the IE600s from my caller's side to not be the clearest (not sure if this is related to the balanced connection). There is also a current software glitch that means you'll see the battery status drop from 100% to 85% in one minute once it's unplugged, but I saw on Head-Fi there should be a software fix for this soon. There appears to be a limited power draw on my Pixel 6 phone when plugged in, not enough to worry about. FYI the HB1 can fit in the IE600 case with the IE600 for a super compact setup, but it's not the easiest to arrange and get zipped closed. I'm still looking for my ideal case. I don't see much written about the HB1 online, which surprises me, as this and the IE600 have such a great synergy and this exactly meets my needs for a light, compact travel setup.
