This was purchased to replace my Netgear Nighthawk. I was a bit skeptical on it because I had never used an ASUS router before. WOW! was I ever impressed with it! Not only was it more simple to setup than my previous router, but this has the ability to create an AP Mesh. My house has several steal beams running through it, so the standard WLAN signals were sometimes interrupted. Connected two ASUS AP Mesh satellites to this and have no issues what so ever in my house now. To be fair to my previous router, it died after a firmware update reboot, so I never had a chance to try an AP Mesh on it. I also love the cellphone app so I can monitor it and make changes remotely. Plus, it just looks sick.

I waited until a month of ownership had passed to fully acquaint myself with this router before writing this review, and gathering an opinion on it/it's features/quirks.Normally I'd lay out my reviews in the "pros/cons manner, but this is a router, and realistically that's difficult to do.Navigating the router - at first - was difficult as I've used Netgear exclusively ever since the Linksys WRT54G was "outdated" due to their ease of use and acceptability of open source firmware. I was a bit deterred to know that this router didn't have open source capabilities, or any developers for such, but decided ultimately based off reviews to give it a chance anyway, and I'm quite glad I did.I've not tested the USB throughput, however, if it's performance is anything ... MoreI waited until a month of ownership had passed to fully acquaint myself with this router before writing this review, and gathering an opinion on it/it's features/quirks.Normally I'd lay out my reviews in the "pros/cons manner, but this is a router, and realistically that's difficult to do.Navigating the router - at first - was difficult as I've used Netgear exclusively ever since the Linksys WRT54G was "outdated" due to their ease of use and acceptability of open source firmware. That's pretty legit if a friend's kids want to come over and use the internet, but I want to make sure that they don't have it automatically the next day should I forget to disable the guest account, etc.Being able to see CPU CORE usage - not just overall - memory usage, logging of multiple different aspects all SEPARATELY DDOS protection built in as well as ICMP requests, etc. are all very nice things to have. The RGB is..basic, but it's not like this is Corsair, afterall, naturally it's going to be a lot less "fun" than it could be, but it's not bad. It COULD be better, but that would come at the cost of RAM/CPU usage - so consider that. The ease of use of this router is bar-none the BEST I've ever had in a managed atmosphere for networking devices, and I went to school for this...so there's that. The CPU usage spikes pretty heavily on my 400Mbps/40Mbps network when I max out traffic during packet sniffing/loss tests/speed tests/large downloads, so it definitely HAS the potential for buffer overflow but I've yet to run into any, and have 5 LAN tablets, 3 Smart TV's, 2 4k Blu-Ray streamers, 5 Bluetooth Audio Systems, a Switch, 4 Desktop PC's, a Server, a HTPC, a fire stick, a laptop, and two smart phones all running through this router as well as 10 cameras, and I've had NO issues whatsoever without even enabling QOS or other "management" features.Again - bar-none this is the BEST router I've ever owned. Period.I haven't tested whether the RGB affects RAM/CPU usage or temps enough to care, but I've got mine mounted on an aluminum 'shelf' with perforations for airflow, and have had absolutely no hiccups whatsoever.Build quality is good, decently heavy, but you can tell that the way they designed it was with airflow in mind. At numerous angles you can see through this router, and that's a good thing!

But I have stead 500 to 800 MB down throughout the day over the Dual Band network of the 2GHz/5GHz management by the routers. Streaming anywhere in the house or working from home of wired or wireless is very efficient now.Highly recommend these routers. The UI is very robust and easy to navigate whether you are a novice or an experienced network planner. My last ASUS Router lasted for more than a decade and only had to be swapped out due to aging radio tech and an unfortunate power surge. ASUS makes products that last.

My existing router was getting old and it seemed to drop the wireless connections often enough for me to decide to look for a new one. After a lot of research I decided to get the Asus RT-82U based on its specs, reviews and cost. I thought about going to the Asus Rog Rapture but it was nearly twice the cost and from what I read it was just overkill for me. Overall I am pleased with the performance and wireless reach and stability of the router. I was disappointed that the router does not have the ability to update you via email or phone notifications from the phone app when a new device has joined or tried to join your wireless network. If you live in a populated area this is one feature you want to have and other router companies now support.Installation: I used ... MoreMy existing router was getting old and it seemed to drop the wireless connections often enough for me to decide to look for a new one. I was disappointed that the router does not have the ability to update you via email or phone notifications from the phone app when a new device has joined or tried to join your wireless network. If you live in a populated area this is one feature you want to have and other router companies now support.Installation: I used the pc web based installation and it was pretty straight forward for me. I used the exact same wireless ssid and password as my old router so once it was powered up all of my devices registered with the new router. The administrative software while functional feels a bit dated. There are a lot of options but for most people it will be plug and play. I spent the most time getting my USB drive attached to the router working correctly so I could access it from any device on the lan. There are lots of videos and instructions out there that are very misleading. The simple way is to go to USB Applications > Service Centers > Network Places. In Network Places add an account user using the PC’s Device Name (must be the Device Name to work) and then add a password. When you access the drive from the pc you use the device name as the user id and the password you created. The RGB lighting in the front of router looks cool and is easy to set to your favorite scheme. After I had everything set up I did download the Asus App on my iphone and registered it with the router. The user interface on the phone app does look nicer and more updated than the web based application even though it provides the same information.Performance: I have a 750mbps from my ISP and I could easily get that from the ethernet ports on the router. Note that the Asus router’s speed test uses the Speedtest.net tool which picks the server to test with and in my case it picks a slow server which means the router indicates the speeds are much slower than what is available. You can pick another server but I don’t recommend relying on this function in the software. My wireless speeds were fairly consistent with the speeds I had with my previous router but I no longer have any dropouts. I did not configure QOS because with four of us gaming at FHD and the tv streaming 4k we never had any indication that the router was having any problems. If in the future I do have QOS issues its nice to see that there are good options especially geared for gamers.
I purchased the Asus AX1800 router to use in a small biz office environment. This router has proven to be both dependable and offers fast speeds for all users in our environment. As with any router, make sure to update the firmware immediately for the latest updates and features. I setup this router entirely with the free Asus app, and the administrative features are intuitive enough for new users but offer features for advanced network control. As a side note, the difference between the AX1800 and AX1800S is the processor. This model, the AX1800 has a superior Broadcom quad core processor as compared to the dual core processor in the lower priced AX1800S. Great expandable wireless router for large or multilevel home. This router it's a life saver and game changer specially for gamers. We purchased this as our home is a 3 level house and our previous router was not good enough to cover all area wireless speaking. This one we installed it into the same spot where the old one was (2nd level of the house) and it made a big improvement in wireless connectivity for our gamers and for our normal wireless users. We have at least 18 devices connected to this router and our internet subscription to 200M we get our wireless connectivity up to 160M which is impressive as we all know wireless is not guaranteed unless you are hard wired to get up to 200M in this scenario.Do I recommend it? Absolutely.
The setup is easy. The range is good. I'm subscribed to 365mbps internet speeds. Somehow I'm running at over 430mbps. Little to no latency. Tons of bandwidth for over 20 devices. There are some oddities though. One of my gaming systems went from open NAT to strict. I'm working on that. My previous router I was able to fix this issue, but have not yet with the Asus. Doing port forwarding was a little more difficult than necessary. When streaming through Xbox one there's a two second buffering stutter at the start of any show. This could be Xbox or this router, but my previous router did not do this, so take it for what it's worth.Bottom line:If you need a router that's fast and efficient this is good. If you have multiple gaming devices of the same manufacturer, you'll run into NAT issues that seem to be unsolvable.
As odd as it may seem, sometimes mesh systems are overkill. I know they are the latest and greatest, but when I downsized from my 3000 sqft, 2 story home to an 1800 sqft, single story, my Netgear Orbi began giving me tons of issues. Dropping connections constantly even though my hardwired PC showed no problems with my internet or ISP. Did some research and found that mesh can be overkill in small spaces because your devices are constantly swapping between the node and satellite which are in too close proximity in too small a space.I got this to replace it and am very glad I did. 10+ devices connected at all times, putting out higher than advertised speeds via WiFi. I have 100% coverage throughout the house and my front and back yards. Very powerful, looks ... MoreAs odd as it may seem, sometimes mesh systems are overkill. Quite literally took less than 5 minutes from opening the box to having a fully functioning unique network. The app is perfect. No account creation required. No registration. Just download the app, plug it in, and go.
This router was a replacement for an Asus RT-AC3100 that had worked perfectly for many years and provided a good signal with 2.4ghz or 5ghz in every corner of my home. After setting up this new router and upgrading the firmware, I was terribly disappointed that there was no 5ghz signal at all in the far corners of my home. The location was the same as the old router, but no 5ghz signal, despite adjusting the antennae in various positions. No problem with the signal or speed when very close to the router. I returned this router and purchased an Asus tri-band model, but it had the same range issue. Returned it and finally purchased a different brand, which works well and covers my entire home with a good signal. Great router. I had an Apple AirPort Extreme that seemed to be working fine so I thought there was no need to upgrade. 2020 hit and my kids ended up doing school from home while I worked from home. While I had never experienced any issues, the kids were having connection issues during Zoom meetings with their classes. I have 1 gigabit internet speed through Comcast/Xfinity and had never seen much more than 550mbps over Wi-fi but figured it was a limitation of the devices I was using. Between seeing the low (for the plan) speeds and the kids having Zoom issues, I decided to get a Wi-fi 6 compatible router. I did a bunch of research and this was one of the highest rated ones and I had my friend, a Sr. Network Engineer, look over the specs and he was impressed by it ... MoreGreat router. I bought it and set it up. Setup was very easy and intuitive so the router was up and running in just minutes. The ASUS app is user friendly as well. While most devices on my network aren’t Wi-fi 6 compatible, my iPad and iPhone both are. I was able to get up to 892mbps with this new router on my phone and up to 901mpbs on my iPad Pro, both of course over Wi-fi. My kids also both have not had a single issue with Zoom meeting connections after the upgrade. This router was money well spent, especially with a smart home full of devices connected, me working from home, and my kids both on Chrome books doing school from home. If you are considering this router, I hope you find this review helpful. I would absolutely buy this router if I had it to do again. It has been running flawlessly for a few months now and has been putting our gigabit service to good use. Oh, and range... The router is located in the middle of our home and we have a detached garage which gets a nice strong signal and a detached shed maybe 100 feet from the router through a few walls and across the yard that has a Wi-fi camera mounted to it which receives a good signal and allows for streaming from the camera so I find the range to be very good.
