For 12 years I ran a successful recording studio and during my early years I went though a phase of discovering the types and brands I prefer to use in an environment of critical listening. The Audio Technica brand headphones came out the winner, every time. I've owned several pairs of the higher end ATH-M models that are a true flat response and even though they are my favorite of the bunch it's not something I want to spend for general client headphone monitoring for podcasting, tracking, or overdubbing. The ATH-M20x works great as a simple yet professional solution. They sound great without much high or low boosts/cuts. The construction and integrity of the headphones are bar-none the best! They outlast all other over-ear headphones. In comparison, Beats by Dre ... In comparison, Beats by Dre are poorly constructed and have over extended low-end, and scooped mids - it's also the same complaint I have with Sony headphones. Bose are well made but have a particular EQ'd profile that can be distasteful to some. I'm not using my Audio Technica headphones for my iPhone or alike. For overly compressed signals, those other brands might help in revitalizing a squashed mix but I'm in the studio on the front end... I need comfort, reliability, true to source sound, and longevity. These fit the bill. They are not sound isolating but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I have bought 3 pairs and will buy more if it is necessary.

I got these to use with an Amplug2 so I could practice at any time of night or even with someone sitting close by. I happened to trade for a cheap electric guitar not long ago because I had never really learned how to play my Epi Super Jumbo gotten nearly 60 years ago. Its heavy strings always wrecked my fingers and interest before I could learn much. I really can't compare these headphones to any others, but to me they are a good combination of comfort and clarity, and they block out a lot of ambient noise and make my practicing virtually silent, which lets me practice more. I've been through five bands and orchestra on keyboard, horns from euphonium to piccolo, and accordion. It's nice to be making progress in guitar to where it could be useful and welcome in a group.

The headphones do put a lot of pressure around the ears, which some people may find uncomfortable. On the contrary, the tight fit means they will not fall off your head when running or headbanging. The headphones are not painful, itchy or irritating after an hour+ of use, but the pressure might be too much.Build quality is great. No sign of the ear muffs coming off. The headphones are made from plastic but are lightweight. They do not fold up. The ear-cups rotate 180 degrees as evident by the hinges. The ear-cups are slim and allow allow the headphones to be worn somewhat comfortably while lying on your side in bed.Notes:- No Bluetooth or batteries- No volume control- The chord is not detachable, but seems to be good quality and should not break easily. I do believe these headphones come with 1 year of free warranty; my pair did at-least.- They are not comfortable to wear around the neck. They clamp tightly together.- They're not the trendiest headphones. The wires are exposed at the point of adjustment, and the slim ear pieces give the headphones a kind-of horseshoe looking shape around the head. When extended (you will always wear them extended unless you have a small head), silver metal is exposed.

I've been a professional broadcaster. newsman, cameraman and field director since 1960 and am now producing audio books using the audacity software, which of course requires very good earphones to ensure top quality when setting recording levels and editing multiple tracks- and these do the job extremely well. Having both a 3/8 and 1/4 inch pin available is a real plus because they are also the best I have used on my walkman. The ear pads are comfortable and fit well. They're not totally sound-proof, which is a good thing because you can still hear (and deal with) any extraneous sound sources when recording - such as the hum from a nearby PC. They provide a much better sound experience than PC speakers for watching on-line videos, especially if you want privacy or don't want to disturb others by using you regular speakers. I guess that's where they would shine for gaming. The three meter cord also allows for plenty freedom of movement and distance from your PC if that's what you need or you can just roll up the excess in the middle and use a twist-tie to shorten it. Five stars and Highly recommended. Michael Knight.
So far these headphones are really good. Quite comfortable to wear for long periods of time. Very good noise cancellation through a secure seal over the ears.Sound is quite tinny and doesn't push through much bass if that is what you're after which is why I've only given it 4 stars. For the price though, build quality is great.
Are there better headphones? Of course - but you would have to spend more $. Are there better headphones for the price? Not so sure. For starters, the frequency response is broad enough so that you aren't missing much expect perhaps for the sub 35Hz material where they seem to drop off. The response seems flat otherwise with no frequencies that jump out harshly at you. As far as comfort, I wear them for approx. 1-2 hours a day and remain comfortable the entire time, with no heat build up inside the cups. They are not loose, and are not too tight - they just fit right. As far as durability and reliability, too soon to tell but I can't see any reason why they wouldn't last a long time unless abused. Build quality is solid.
I tried to cheap out and buy some budget headphones from another site. There were just enough issues to annoy me. I should have started with these ATH-M20x headphones and I could have been done with my search.Comparing comfort, my first-purchase headphones were just big enough to almost fit over my ear, but required some assistance every time I put them back on which became annoying. The ATH-M20x is a perfect fit. I've owned some comfortable headphones over the years, but these take a commanding lead!Cable length: The ATH-M20x cable is long enough to plug in to my computer under the desk and allow me to still scoot over to my bookshelf about 4 feet away.As for audio quality, I'm not an expert but it sounds more natural than other headphones in this price ... It doesn't over pump the bass side of the spectrum.I'd would've given this 4.5 stars if possible. The only downside is the bass is a little dull for my preference, but at least it's not overbearing or hollow.
As a person to whom specs are of little help, I needed headphones for listening to music and my playlists (which a mostly classical) on my pc. I already am happy with my Sennheiser phones for optimum listening, so I was looking for some less critical (and frankly) and cheaper phones. I was surprised by the powerful bass. Music and videos I listen to on YouTube sound great, and my own CDs sound good enough (I attribute that to the player). So this is a real bargain without too much of a compromise.
Purchased these headphones primarily for movie watching. They are very well made and the input cable is long enough and very flexible. My only complaint is that when I lay back a pillow might shift them around on my head. Also, if you have big ears the cushion area might touch your ear. Overall happy with my purchase.
Audio Technica M20X is the little brother of their M series flagship headphone ATM50X. Do not get fooled by its cheap price. The build quality is on par with their expensive headphones. M20X is also a professional studio headphone which delivers the true or rather raw audio provide by your sound drivers. Used them for a while now and still no sign of use. Even the ear cup cushions still look brand new after a lot of heavy uses. I was so confident about the sound quality of Audio Technica headset however I did not except this much build quality. The adjustable core actually brushed stainless steel so no need to worry about accidentally breaking them ever. I can wear these for hours and forgot that I have them on my head. Most parts are plastic however, those parts feel well designed, robust and can take a heavy abuse. I play games most of time of the day. Audio output when you play games is actually better than a gaming headset due to its raw sound quality. So you're gamer and you have a doubt about these headphones, I'd say go for it. The cable length is 3 meters which is more than enough for any situation. But keep in mind that these are not portable pair of headsets so if you intend to buy these only for outdoor use then I suggest you better look for another pair of headset. Two 40mm drivers provide a solid frequency range which starts from 20kHz and goes down to 15Hz. The low end is not virtually enhanced so you'll hear a very clean, heavy bass. High frequency sounds are crispy clear as well. There's no sound clipping at max volume. To sum things up, I think, under $100, these ATH-M20x headphones are the best value for money at the moment when you consider its build quality and sound quality.
