I felt compelled to write this review after seeing so many negative ones. First off, I've been coloring my hair for over 30 years (I'm well into my 50's) and have been an Aveda customer for almost as long. I've used cheap brands and expensive brands but became a devoted Color Conserve user. When Aveda upgraded to Color Control I too was skeptical and unsure if this new version was going to keep me as a customer. Well-- Upgraded it is-- and then some!! My color lasts well into 3 weeks before I see ANY fade. Especially at the root line where the gray seems to fade out more than the length. It cleanses my hair without drying it out, rinses clean and the fragrance is absolutely wonderful; refreshing and a nice change from the Color Conserve. If you're unsure of this product, I encourage you to purchase a trial size and give it your own try out. I felt reviewers were just dumping on a new innovation before giving it a fair chance. Great Job on this one Aveda!

I was shocked to learn that this formula had changed, but I bought it, trusting that Aveda (totally trustworthy in the past) was improving the product. I have used Color Conserve for many years and loved it, after I learned to "love" the fragrance, lol. It was different to anything I had ever used. The last bottle I bought of the CC was the large one and had just run out of it. After using the full bottle, I am very unhappy with it. It is thin and doesn't suds up the way the CC did. I no longer go to an official Aveda salon, so I am hoping my salon will have a good one to recommend that I try, because there is no way I will spend more money on this NOT rich shampoo...and no I did not buy the "light" version,

Color Control has taken the place of Color Conserve but is geared towards African American hair as most of the new products are. It is so hard to wash out of my hair that it feels like co-washing - dull and limp when towel drying. I have used Color Conserve for decades and Aveda even longer but no more. Also I had over 110,000 points in the Aveda program and was at the highest tier but suddenly Aveda started a NEW rewards program and my tier points were deleted! I am back Tier 1 now. I was planning to visit the UK with my daughter but Covid hit and everything shut down. Now all of my points are lost. That was a lot of money I spent over the years. I am so disappointed and going with Lolavie, Living Proof and Keratin Complex now.

I think Aveda sets the standard for hair products. I colour my hair at home and like to look after it with good products. I applaud Aveda for replacing synthetic silicone in products with a more natural ingredient. This shampoo cleans my hair and doesn't dry it out. I use it with the colour control conditioner and the result is healthy feeling, shiny hair. I think it helps prolong the colour too. No idea why the negative reviews when there's so much choice from Aveda. I've liked all the products I've used and like to try the new ones like this. Would buy again and recommend for anyone wanting to look after their coloured hair. Of course, JL click and collect makes getting this product easy.
I've used Aveda since the 1980s and everyone always used to complement me on my hair. When it started to go grey, Color Conserve was a fantastic product. But after you discontinued it, I moved on to Color Control (bought the two largest sizes of Shampoo and Conditioner) and immediately suffered (for the first time in my life) from a horribly itchy and painful scalp. It's so painful after months of use that I have to use another shampoo for the scalp and only use Color Control for the ends. The product also smells like chemicals. Not sure why the change, but sadly I think I'll have to move on from Aveda. The weird generic responses in these reviews (call us to find another color-treatment product that doesn't actually exist) to so many physical complaints is almost as much of a turn-off as Color Control itself. Aveda doesn't seem to care that every hair salon I frequent is now warning people away from their products. Ah, well, it was great while it lasted.
I recently tried Color Control after using Color Conserve for well over 10 years. I was hesitant to try it because of the bad reviews, but the live chat agent convinced me it was best for my hair (lots of long, fine, straight, very porous hair). It does nothing that Color Conserve used to do for my hair. Color Conserve made my hair healthy and sleek without being weighed down, and I had less breakage and split ends; my stylist would say keep doing what you're doing because it's great for your hair. But Color Control doesn't lather much, makes my hair feel greasy and heavy at the roots and dry on the ends with more split ends, makes my scalp itch, and doesn't help with frizz in humid weather like Color Conserve did. We're paying more for less product and poorer performance. I'm not sure which shampoo to try next, because based on the reviews, not many customers are happy with the reformulated version of any shampoos Aveda carries. Please bring back Color Conserve! I want to remain a loyal customer, but I can't with the current offering of shampoo products!
This is the first time I've been disappointed with an Aveda product. I'm a huge fan of the previous Colour Conserve shampoo. Unfortunately for me, I bought my usual jumbo size before realizing that this wasn't just a bottle design revamp but a complete reformulation. Double misfortune that Aveda changed their return policy at the same time and no longer accepts returns at their stores; meaning I'm on the hook for return shipping on a heavy, 1-litre bottle if I want a refund. The old formula is gentle while effectively cleaning even greasy, day 5 hair; but forget using this new formula on day 3, let alone later. This formula is heavy, the artificially fruity scent is overwhelming and it leaves a RESIDUE on your hair. This formula is heavy, the artificially fruity scent is overwhelming and it leaves a RESIDUE on your hair. Worst of all, I can't get a clean head of hair, even with triple repeats; which is a waste of product, a waste of time, and it's a needless stress on my hair. Even after a triple wash with this new formula, I had to reach for another shampoo to finish the job. Such a DISAPPOINTMENT. Please bring back the old formula; it was perfect. This product is awful.
Bring back Color Conserve!!! Aveda, WHAT are you thinking and WHY??? Why do you keep taking your fabulous products and reformulate them into an inferior product that is repackaged into a smaller bottle with a bloated price tag??? I'm glad I had samples of this one included in a recent Aveda order and didn't have to shell out the money. It is awful! I have always appreciated Aveda's products because a little goes a long way. I used a very small amount of the shampoo on very wet hair and got hardly any lather. (Sulphate-free is a sorry excuse for not having a lather. There are plenty of sulphate-free shampoos that produce a nice lather.) I agree with other reviewers who say it does not clean my hair and definitely leaves a greasy-feeling residue and looks even more ... MoreBring back Color Conserve!!! I agree with other reviewers who say it does not clean my hair and definitely leaves a greasy-feeling residue and looks even more awful the next day (when I skip washing and use Shampowder). My (sweet) daughter even commented on the greasy look! Not only this, but it seemed to emphasize the darker parts of my blonde hair - which is NOT the look I am going for! I just had my hair lightened (balayage) to brighten it up. I used this shampoo twice over the course of 4 days and I literally had nightmares about how bad my hair looked. Thankfully, I have half a bottle of Color Conserve left, which I used today and WOW - it makes my hair shiny, bright, and looks amazing. Of course, Aveda gave us no warning of discontinuing Color Conserve and so I was unable to stock up which I feel sick about. One more thing, I find it very suspicious that nearly ALL of the 4 and 5-star reviews were "Submitted as part of a free sample program." What's that all about?! If you read carefully you can see that many of those reviewers don't even use Aveda regularly. The honest reviews from faithful Aveda customers fall in the 1 and 2 star range. I'm very disappointed.
I've been (nearly exclusively) an Aveda product user for 20+ years due to their Leaping Bunny certification. I was so excited to try this product as a means to conserve my Aveda hair color that I almost didn't want to admit the allergic reaction I started having was because of this shampoo. After my neck and eyelids swelled up quite dramatically and began to itch horribly, I went to urgent care and then to a dermatologist. Verdict is in that it's this shampoo. I've never had anything like this happen. The shampoo did leave my hair oily as other reviewers mentioned but I considered it it more a reaction to my past shampoo overcleaning; my scalp just needed to balance back out. The shampoo did leave my hair oily as other reviewers mentioned but I considered it it more a reaction to my past shampoo overcleaning; my scalp just needed to balance back out. I was both committed and excited to transition to a gentler shampoo and let my scalp recalibrate (lots of info online that talk about this process). So much that I've tried using this shampoo for a full month, hoping the allergic reaction was from something else or my body would acclimate. But the verdict from the dermatologist finally came in and I can't deny it any longer. I hope Aveda offers a more hypoallergenic truly non-sulfate (or any of its cousins) shampoo for their colored-hair users who understand and are committed to the temporary oily transitioning period that will occur when using this type of product. I'm excited to use a color conserving shampoo from their line, assuming it will be formulated to work especially well with their hair coloring products used in their salons.
I was surprised to see all the negative reviews on this product. It works great for my hair and I like it so much better than the color conserve. I must be in the minority because I never liked the scent of the old color conserve either. Color conserve left my hair limp and weighted down, this new product gives my hair life. It's light weight and makes my hair shine. I have super fine, thin hair. Maybe that makes a difference and that's why it works for me. I use aveda hair color and occasionally have highlights. I do notice that it is not as moisturizing on the highlighted areas, but works great when my hair is a solid dark color and not bleached. I like the scent a lot better too.
