We have a Breville 920XL Dual Boiler and for the last two years we have used a low to mid price range grinder from a quality Company. But, that grinder has been just "OK".We use high end espresso beans and the grinder only barely came close to an optimum grind at the absolute max espresso grind setting. It could help to just barely achieve a 9 bar pull @ a 30 psi tamp. With various beans the result was often a slightly bitter to fairly bitter with an OK crema and some chocolate favors. So, pretty good for lattes but usually yielded only mid range quality espresso shots. The grinder has been getting even less capable with age so buying a new grinder has been imminent for the last six months while doing research, studying, reading blogs, watching demo videos and ... So, pretty good for lattes but usually yielded only mid range quality espresso shots. The grinder has been getting even less capable with age so buying a new grinder has been imminent for the last six months while doing research, studying, reading blogs, watching demo videos and talking to espresso friends and baristas. Our $$ limit was an absolute $1,400 max with a preferred price point under $1,000. Strictly for home use with usually 4 to 6 doubles every day and occasionally 10 or 12 doubles at a gathering of friends.Additional criteria for us included under 15" tall if possible, as quiet as possible, powerful but lower RPM operation to better protect the beans, and yes, a classy looking heavy machine of near commercial quality. Weight based grinding was also desirable but not a deal breaker. However, a good quality portafilter holder option was essential. For our needs, it kept coming down to the Baratza Vario W, the Baratza Forte AP, or the various Mazzer Mini E's.We finally chose the Forte AP. We ground through 3 pounds on the first day to break it in and to get a feel for bracketing the likely espresso grind settings. By the third day and after maybe 30 double shot grinds we felt we had a good ball park. Somewhere between 3C and 2S seemed to yield the results we desired. The machine can also do Turkish and French Press grinds that satisfy our coffee needs. A little coarser would be nice for the French Press, but this is close enough. The real test is of course the espresso shots. The Forte AP brings out the nuances of each bean we've tried. Caramels, chocolates, and more delicate tastes are enhanced while almost eliminating any hints of distracting bitterness. The end product is certainly leap years ahead of the previous grinders we've owned over the last seven years of home espresso enjoyment.Summing it all up, the Baratza Forte AP is a nicely heavy machine with very high quality overall construction exhibiting excellent engineering tolerances and attention to detail. The time and weight grind features offer great flexibility, the touch screen controls are easy and intuitive, and the portafilter holder has proved flawless. I would have to surmise that this machine will be a blueprint for the next generation of high end electronic controlled grinders for either home or commercial use.As usual, SCG made the purchase and delivery easy, fair, and quick. Many thanks to SCG.

Over the last 15 years I have had a number of Encore and Virtuoso grinders from Baratza. All have been very good and generally provided a consistent output. The Forte BG/AP is in a totally different league. Absolutely no extra fines/oversize particles. No need for a Kruve sieve. Consistency across different beans, roasts and brew methods is amazing. Very nice touch that Coffee Hit includes the steel burr set as an option. One further variable sorted out in the pursuit of a "God in a Cup" brew. Highly recommended.

This is my first experience with a higher quality grinder so I don't have a lot to compare it to. At first grind, I was amazed at how fluffy the grind was. It is literally twice the volume of my previous grinder for the same weight. It took me a couple of days to get the grind dialed in just right. I ended up at 3P for 8.4 seconds. I love the programmable buttons, it makes things so convenient. Because the grind is so fluffy, more of it ended up on the counter making a mess. We solved that by programming one button for 4.2 seconds. We grind for 4.2 seconds, tamp, then grind for another 4.2 seconds. You are definitely going to want a tray under it. This one fits perfectly and minimizes the appearance of a mess. ... MoreThis is my first experience with a higher quality grinder so I don't have a lot to compare it to. It is not quiet, but we are GRINDING hard beans. Overall, I am very happy with it. I was especially happy with the guidance given me by my WLL CSR. I had done hours of research and yet was still unsure of my choices. He listened, questioned, and zeroed me right in on the right gear. Surprizingly, his questions were not about coffee, they were designed to determine my personality type, which told him how I think, which is way more relevant than all of the minutia I was trying to parse. Thanks WLL, very happy with my purchase.

The version supplied by Cofffee hit came with ceramic burrs fitted but with a spare set of steel burrs. The finer grind of this machine has improved the results with my Sage espresso greatly over a smaller burr grider or pre-ground coffee. I found the recommended setting a bit too fine and the Sage could not pump the water through. I settled on a setting of 4 which gives an espresso amount in about the right time. The Sage portafilter does not fit well in the holder as it has 3 lugs which foul the rear tab under which the holder is supposed to fit. It is necessary to hold in place while grinding otherwise it is unstable and can slip. Not a problem with it taking only 7 seconds to fill the double shot holder. Note that you cannot grind by weight directly into the portafilter - it is the plastic bin that fits onto the scales at the bottom. Since you have to heap the coffee to get a full filter after tamping, there is normally a small amount of spillage. What would really be good is if a tamping device could be built in so it holds the mounded coffee until it is pressed down level. Much quieter than my previous cheap machine. One minor annoyance is that there is only a quick start sheet and a downloadable manual. Considering the price I think a manual should be included.
The coffee grinder is one of the most critical element for a succesfull final result. I mainly (98%) work expresso. I had the oppportunity to test in the Baratza Sette 270 (it exists also the version 270 WI - works by weight) and the Forté AP. I wanted to work by weight or by time. The stability of the Sette 270 /270 W could have compromised the work by weight. I definitely decided to opt for the Forté AP knowing that changing the burrs (54 mm flat ceramic ) by the metallic ones would transform it into the BG model/ needed. The necessary stability is reached due to the weight of the 6 Kg. I also took care in my choice about the recommended elapsed time between 2 no restriction for a home this device can be also used for small business). Very nice and efficient product!
Best money ever spent for espresso. I thought I had a decent grinder before but now I realize. Well built, solid grinder. As with any grinder, need to run it while shifting to a finer macro grind, so I've had to get used to wasting some coffee grinds. Based upon my pre-purchase research though, this grinder doesn't 'retain' a lot when changing beans or settings. We do this often, using both the portafilter and basket dispensing.
Yes it’s an expensive coffee grinder. But it should be the last coffee grinder you need for your home. It’s heavy, and built to last. My favorite part is the ability to set the weight of coffee to grind; it makes having a consistent coffee taste every time. You can also accurately change the grind setting to meet ensure the saturation time of your coffee is perfect.I use mine for a drip coffee maker, the Technivorm 1-cup. If using coffee beans from Starbucks, your drip coffee will taste like Starbucks if you put in the correct setting of grind size and weight.I love how it has ‘favorite’ settings. This way I have two different settings, for two different sized cups. For an after dinner coffee, I use a smaller cup.
This grinder covers all my needs. Coffee from my Mochamaster or espresso machine never tasted better. The suggested settings for grind size were close. You will want to tweak them slightly to dial in the best results. I have never owned a programmable grinder prior to the Forte AP. There is much less mess and results are always consistent. Preparation time is reduced to selecting a program and pushing start. No more measuring and weighing. I would recommend this grinder to anyone who wants a versatile grinder that produces quality results across a wide range of applications. It is certainly not a cheap investment but the rewards are in the versatility of a high quality grinder that covers all my needs.
After grinding three double espresso a day, every day, for the past nearly 10 years, the motor on my trusty 2010 Vario eventually gave up. It had been problem-free for all that time and the model size and profile had suited my domestic setup well. I was therefore intent on buying an exact replacement. However, after viewing many YouTube videos and hundreds of posts in the various coffee forums, I eventually decided to treat myself and my La Pavoni Europiccola to a grinder upgrade.I settled on the Forte AP and this was to be my first purchase from CoffeeHit. I chose this particular supplier because of their excellent feedback and because the Forte they sell comes with both ceramic and steel burrs, effectively providing both the AP and BG grinder in one. The grinder arrived earlier than expected, despite CoffeeHit moving warehouses and I was both grateful and impressed by CoffeeHit for their regular e-mails providing situational updates on the progress of my order. As for the Forte, it is for me the perfect upgrade to my old Vario. Same footprint as the Vario and so enabling me to keep it in exactly the same spot as my last grinder without having to change my (tight for space) kitchen setup. The Forte is heavier (having so much more metal) and certainly looks the part, such that both my wife and daughter have praised it for its looks. I find it a little louder than the Vario was but of course the Forte can grind by weight (into the plastic coffee bin only) as well as by timer where I can use the useful portafilter holder, which fits the La Pavoni Europiccola's portafilter well. The Forte has reignited my interest and enthusiasm in my daily espresso drinks and it provides a better and far more consistent grind than I had been used to, resulting in a more flavoursome cup. The Forte suits my coffee needs and I am so pleased I bought it. I would certainly buy it again, and from CoffeeHit.
We bought the Baratza Forte-AP grinder specifically because we wanted a grinder to use between drip coffee and espresso. Most days we make Hario V60 for breakfast and cappuccinos in the afternoon. We didn't want to buy two grinders for our older Portland home. The dial in is smooth with the clear number and alphabetical system. The hopper is easy to remove and empty to change beans. We have an La Pavoni espresso machine and the grind is crucial to making a quality espresso. The Barata Forte has lived up to our expectations. It also fits under our counter which is an added bonus.
