The handle looks thin but feels better than it looks. It is well thought out and the design is such that it fits you without your conscious thought. Make a cut and then move your hand for a new cutting angle and the knife is suddenly positioned perfectly for what you are doing. Change grip for another cut and your thumb is just naturally into one of the groves near the front of the handle. You do not have to to adjust or try to get another grip. It's like the knife does it for you. Just wonderful, it looks so "plain" but that is deceiving, it does everything better than it looks like it should.Wonderfully sharp right out of the box and the edge has held up through three deer so far. Just no excuse to sharpen it yet. A bit more blade than necessary for anything ... MoreThe handle looks thin but feels better than it looks. Previous knives really let me down there, needing re-sharpened half way through the big jobs. I've heard a lot of good things about Benchmade knives holding their edge and believe this the solution.I'm going to need a replacement sheath though. The current one is good if I keep the knife in the pack but someday I may want it on my belt.

I was hesitant to spend that kind of jack on a knife as I’m a tightwad of the highest order but after trying to find something worthy to blow my scheels gift card on for several months I fo’d. This thing is 87 times sharper than any knife I have ever had straight out of the package and the fit and finish is superb. It’s super light and the handle feels great, can’t wait to give it a go on some whitetail and elk this fall. Makes me wanna buy more benchmade stuff but alas I am all out of gift cards.

This knife functions well and is extremely sharp. This is hands down the sharpest knife I've ever used right out of the box and can hold an edge. Simple honing/stropping should be all you need for hunting season (if that). Once hunting season is over send the knife back to benchmade for them to re-sharpen and return to you. Only reason for 4 star is the overall look/appearance. For a $200+ knife it is very underwhelming in appearance. The stonewashed blade is cheap looking, the handles are tacky and on the thin side for no real reason, and while I like the sheath in many ways it missed the mark by not being able to be attached to a belt easily. All in all, it's a good knife, but for the price I wouldn't recommend it. The benchmade steep country will do just as well ... MoreThis knife functions well and is extremely sharp. I hate the colors.. brown and orange… but it’s functional. The orange helps you find the knife when it’s on the forest floor, even in dim conditions. The selling point here is the steel they use. It’s crazy sharp and stays that way. This is how I use this knife: sharpen sticks, hunt, fish, throw it at trees occasionally, use the back side to open beers (while sheathed), open boxes sometimes and make kindling (paired with a hammer). 5ish months of abuse and it’s still it’s still not dull. I can’t shave with it any longer now, but no joke it comes out of the box capable of shaving with and stays. But it’s still wicked sharp and light.
This is a great knife — very sharp out of the box, well balanced, and handsome. However, the sheath is flimsy kydex and has 1” belt slits — who even wears a 1” belt. It looks like there are a lot of aftermarket sheaths, but for the price, I expect better from Benchmade.
I have had a great experience with this knife, from the handling and style to the fine edge retention it has been great. The knife was purchased for hunting and it has lived up to all expectations. It has been used to skin and process two wild pigs and three whitetail deer and is still crazy sharp. The steel is so hard that I do not use it for batoning but for a hunting knife it is as good as I've tried. The only negatives are that the sheath is just suitable for use on webbing (need a dangler to put it on a belt) and the blade is hard to sharpen. The last is a small negative since it holds an edge better than any knife I've owned and Benchmade will sharpen it at no charge for life.
The knife is awesome, and deadly sharp, but the sheath is a piece of crap. The knife constantly bites into the side of the sheath and the knife gets jammed up. Slices of the sheath come out every time I remove the knife. I called benchmade and they told me the knife is not designed for quickly taking the knife out and putting it back in the sheath. Its only meant to be put in a pack and removed once and a while. Really? On a $300+ knife? I will be returning the knife before it destroys the sheath.
There is a reason you pay the Benchmade price - they are outstanding quality. This new Saddle Mountain Skinner is no exception. Incredibly sharp S90V blade right out of the box and makes butchering a deer a cake walk. The orange and fake wood handles are very attractive and not as slippery as you would think. I like the kydex sheath but the belt loops are way too small to put on your belt so you will need to buy a Tek-Lok attachment if you want to carry on your belt. I wish Benchmade included the Tek-Lok attachment, especially considering the price you pay. Overall very happy with the purchase and would highly recommend for anyone looking for a knife that is truly top tier.
I used this knife butchering a bull elk while others used their "quality" knives. My knife is as sharp today, without sharpening it, as the day I bought it (extremely sharp). Note every other knife used on that elk became dull whereas mine clearly outperformed every other knife. Note the use also included skinning the hide.
