I researched and this was the best all-around recommendation and hard to get here, let alone so cheap, so I got one to try. After I received mine and played with it, we bought 4 more for our parents. Super bright, better than my best torch. Plus boosted mode for short flashes of even stronger light. Has a brilliant range of settings with dimming for every condition. PLUS red light for night walking to see nocturnal mammals and birds. Very comfortable, strap and buckles don't dig in at all. I love the adjustable angle so you can aim at your target area- it goes right from pointing at your feet to up in the treetops. I have many headlamps, including the Spot 300, Spot 200, two vintage Petzl Tikkas, a bunch of cheap Duracell headlamps from Costco, and an incandescent Petzl headlamp that’s 35 years old. I use them around the house, on camping trips, and my volunteer mission trips to Third World countries where there is no electricity. The Spot 400 is the best of the bunch, a significant improvement on its predecessors—which were already very good. The wire cutter has an excellent comparative review of headlamps. But, most notably, the two button design makes it much easier to rotate through modes, and turn the headlamp on and off. The ability to dim all three LEDs is great, and the headlamp remembers your last setting, although learning how to do this might take a bit of practice. It’s the same as on the Spot 200 and 300.Black Diamond advertises dual fuel, you can get the optional BD 1500 lithium battery pack, I have not used or seen one but, when I need extra performance I buy Energizer Ultimate lithium AAA batteries. They last forever and are significantly lighter than standard alkaline AAAā€˜s. Great when you’re traveling in a country where electricity is not to be taken for granted

Fully dim-able to a really low level. The instructions are easy to follow, but with all the features, you're likely to not remember how to do everything at first. At the regular "max" setting, the brightness is extraordinary; I've never owned a light this powerful. It's just short of "stadium lighting"; I exaggerate only a little. I disagree with the reviewer who thought the red light was too dim; it wasn't super bright, but seemed to do the job for me.It seems solid, and well built.Using either the BD 1500 or AAA batteries, the battery life is impressive. I went a week of car-camping, keeping it on medium or low (which is all you need) the whole time, and it's still at 80%. The BD 1500 has much longer full-level life, but substantially lower "reserve" time than the AAA's - defined by BD as additional time it provides "usable light" at a low level.Generally easy to use, with a couple of exceptions noted below.Cons:The "power tap" feature is WAY too sensitive; I activated it just by reaching up to turn the light off - annoying to say the least. Pulling a Buff over my head did the same thing. I finally started using only my left hand to operate the buttons, and that seemed to stop the problem, but still, you have to be cautious and it can activate without warning. If you hold the on button down just a tiny bit too long, and it turns on the the "max" level, no matter what it was at last time. The blue LEDs on the side of the unit that show battery level are far too bright. They come on for a moment whenever you turn the light off - which negates all the advantage of using the red light in, for instance, a tent or below a hat with a brim. A few long seconds of that blue light, and my eyes were already having to readjust to the dark. I put a couple of layers of duct tape over them, but could still light up a tent with blue.As others have mentioned, the light dug into my forehead painfully after a bit. I loosened the strap and added a bit of padding and that seems to have solved it.Overall, a good solid unit with some really annoying oddities and problems.

IPX8…ish!
17 January 2023

If you have previously owned a Black Diamond headlamp that as submersible, don’t get fooled by this one being labelled IPX8. It can be submerged without causing immediate damage, BUT it cannot be USED normally like a Storm with a less water rating of IPX67 for example can. Because this one will immediately take on water into the battery compartment and needs to dry out completely afterwards. Hence, it cannot be used like you would EXPECT from an IPX8 rated lamp from the same brand where previous IPX67 products have been fine for continuous use directly after submersion. And since this one lacks a rubber seal as opposed to e.g. the Storm, I’d be surprised if water would not stain the batteries even if it’s simply just raining. Do not buy this lamp if you want it to ...Ā MoreIf you have previously owned a Black Diamond headlamp that as submersible, don’t get fooled by this one being labelled IPX8. Powerful/versatile headlamp, but finicky controls
9 May 2022

I really wanted to take this thing out into the wilderness on a backpacking trip for my test period, but unfortunately life had other plans! A work trip and a wedding booked up the two weekends after I received the item, so I instead had to use it around the home - for things like walking the dog at night and vacuuming my car in a dimly-lit garage.Let's start with what I liked. I love all the features, to include the red lamp, strobe (the red lamp can also strobe, which is nice), and the dimming feature (simply hold the power button to dim/brighten). The head band is very easy to adjust, and I had no problems getting it to stay snug on my head. The head band is very easy to adjust, and I had no problems getting it to stay snug on my head. This thing is also very bright - much more so than the lightweight (rechargeable) Black Diamond that I normally carry on overnight trips. It will be really handy to use in situations where you need a very powerful lamp and also need your hands free. The ability to swap between rechargeable and AAA batteries is also such a great feature. It allows you to regularly use the rechargeable battery, while not worrying about it dying while out in the woods (if you carry extra AAA batteries that is).Now on to what I didn't like -The instructions are kind of confusing, and only use images to explain how to use the headlamp. It wasn't too hard for me to figure out because I already have a Black Diamond and most of the features are the same, but a first time user might have some problems figuring out how to use the headlamp. Maybe some written instructions would help? Second, the lamp can get quite warm if used on full power for an extended period of time. Lastly, I found the "tap" feature (to cycle quickly to full brightness) very finicky. Sometimes it would work with a light touch, and other times it would take a few taps before it worked correctly. It was honestly a little frustrating to use.Overall, I would still recommend this headlamp. It's on the heavy side (74g with the rechargeable battery; 80g with AAA), but the versatility and brightness are really worth it to me.

Replacement Headlamp

I bought this headlamp because my old Black Diamond spot headlamp finally stopped working. I had bought it back in 2015 and it saw a lot of use as a headlight for running outdoors. I used it in all kinds of conditions through rain and snow it always held up. I really liked my old 'Spot' but when it stopped working and I couldn't not figure out what was wrong with it, I decided I better replace it - as I use it frequently. This new one is far brighter than the old one. The new headband for the light is smaller and seems to be more comfortable to wear. The weight if anything is less than my original Spot. The buttons on the lamp are more intuitive as well. From a functional standpoint this is really a better headlamp than the original I had. Interestingly enough the new one was essentially the same price as the one I bought 8 years ago. The only downside I saw right away comparing the two was that my original Spot had a significantly cooler look. Not that the looks are a major consideration for my application but I find it strange that Black diamond went with this look which is so much more 'boxy'

I have nothing against the Spot 400. Appears to be a very good headlight. My purchase was predicated trying to replace the headband ā€œbracketā€ of an outdated BD HL. All I wanted was a replacement bracket - the headlight still worked fine (bracket broke in subzero AK temps). I was told bracket was obsolete and offered a 40% off ā€œcodeā€ to purchase a new HL. Great, BUT - the replacement became the Spot 400. One attraction of the 400 was it could use both 3xAAA batteries or a rechargeable battery pack. I tried to buy both to save shipping….wrong. Discount automatically applied to lowest cost item, so instead of $20 off HL, I got $12 off recharge batt pack and full price on HL. The Spot hits the spot!
1 August 2022

The BD spot has been my "go to" mountaineering/climbing/hiking headlight for years. Somehow technological wizardry allows the weight to stay the same with 3 AAA batteries but the light is brighter with each upgrade. This model has the streamlined the switches, making it very easy to use and change modes. I like the option of the rechargeable power source though admit I have not used it. Another winner. My one neg comment on the Spots, and I wonder if others have noted this, is that despite locking the headlight in the off position somehow it can still come on in my pack. So my friends and I usually reverse one battery each morning to be sure it is not accidentally activated. Not a big deal, but would be nice if this was not an issue. I have not had this new model ...Ā MoreThe BD spot has been my "go to" mountaineering/climbing/hiking headlight for years. I have not had this new model long enough to see how this one does in lock mode. And btw, I tend to put my gear thru the wringer.

Took a minute

I had read significantly good reviews on this headlamp, so was excited to get one. Arrived as expected, and I immediately loaded up the batteries and started learning the buttons (once you get the hang of it, which doesn't take long, you begin to see how thoughtful and simplistic the controls are). But, as I was doing that, the light flickered, would inexplicably (wait for it) brighten and dim... Honestly thought it was defective, and I was disappointed. So, I removed and reinstalled the batteries, still happening.Roll foward a few days, and then realizing IT'S A FEATURE, and a good one! No matter what brightness you're on (and, btw, no cycling each time you turn it on/off to get to the needed mode), if you tap the right side of the case near the corner, it sets ...Ā MoreI had read significantly good reviews on this headlamp, so was excited to get one. No matter what brightness you're on (and, btw, no cycling each time you turn it on/off to get to the needed mode), if you tap the right side of the case near the corner, it sets that particular mode to full bright until you tap it again or turn it off. Great design, and a cool way to get instant bright light without fumbling with the switch (turns out I was inadvertently hitting that spot on the case while learning how to cycle through the modes and adjust brightness).Great light, very comfortable, seems very well made with thoughtful features. Considering buying another to have as a back up.

Uncomfortable strap and poor battery life
17 July 2022

I previously owned older versions of Black Diamond headlamp and liked them, but bought this new one because the hinge on my older ones was no longer keeping the headlamp up. This one I do not like and I regret purchasing it. The battery lasts at most one evening of camping, and this is trying to keep the lamp in a dim setting. Every time you turn it on and off it seems to jump into a bright mode. Every time you touch the right side of it, it will turn to bright mode. This is supposed to be a feature, but the area is so sensitive that almost every time you adjust the direction of the beam, it jumps into bright mode, further draining the battery. The head band is very uncomfortable and does not stay on your head well (because of the material and because it is so narrow) unless it is very tight. If you have it tight, the plastic strap adjusters dig into your skull and the narrow plastic rim of the attachment of the strap to the light digs into your forehead. I think the only good thing to say about this headlamp is that it has a red light and switching between lighting modes is easy because there is a separate button for this.
