This board, like pretty much every product I've ever dealt with from BlackMagicDesign, has several caveats. If you're leery of the brand, or just the amount of money being spent, think carefully before you purchase.Pros: It does everything you've heard it can do. 8 Camera plugins (that mostly work, more on that later), 2 microphone plugins, 2 USB-C outs, an ethernet jack, volume controls for each individual input, chroma and luma keys, transition affects, and even the software that you can install for free is pretty easy to use.Cons: I don't understand some of the problems with this board and why they haven't been addressed. Out of the box you'll find there is no on/off switch. Huh? Yeah, plug it in and it's on, unplug it and it's off. Out of the box you'll find there is no on/off switch. Huh? Yeah, plug it in and it's on, unplug it and it's off. No big deal except this thing heats up pretty quick so you better turn it off (unplug it) when you're not using it. What is most frustrating about doing this is that it does NOT remember settings when you unplug it. Like a different fade transition? Better remember to always change to it when you turn it on. Have to adjust the gain/compressor/gate/volume settings on your mic channel? Better screenshot your settings or have a really good memory because everything goes back to zero when you unplug it. Always leaving a chroma/luma key on to overlay lyrics? Too bad, open the software every time you turn it on and turn the key back on.Which this leads into my next complaint specifically with the Extreme model. There are buttons for the chroma and luma keys ON the board. They don't work. Maybe mine is defective, but I have to go into the software to turn these features on/off. When I use the software, I do see the buttons on the board itself "light up" and I figured oh, I can just push those on from the board, but no they don't do anything, it's weird.Lastly, and this is very specific so it probably won't affect many people but it's still worth mentioning, is that if you have a PTZOpitics brand camera, you can't use slots 1 and 2. I plugged mine in, and had a green bar appear across the top of my image. Upon researching this issue I found on BlackMagicDesign's own forum support page, that this is a known problem and that you just have to plug it into a different port and it goes away. Annoying, and if you have 8 PTZOptics cameras you're going to take serious issue with this, but what really matters about this to everyone even if you don't have one of these cameras is the companies SERIOUS lack of support. I emailed them about this issue and their response was "Since it is a known issue, I would expect a fix in an upcoming firmware update." Upcoming?!? When is that? You "would expect" yeah that's not a guarantee. I've had previous correspondence with their support team (which take a week to reply by the way, for a company of their reputation I consider that pathetic) to which they are of literally no help or just simply say that it is just not compatible with my equipment (even though it should be) and therefore since it works with other equipment it is "working as designed."All these complaints and I still give it 3 stars and do recommend it. Why? Because it still CAN do what it's supposed to, it's just a pain in the rear-end with too many work-arounds that'll probably never get fixed due to lack of support. Coupled with the fact that other brands sell boards with less features for more money. I'm starting to think that while BlackMagicDesign really isn't making the best products persay, they have built the name they have simply because they can do more for less. That's the tradeoff. If you've got the money, I recommend a more reputable and stable brand, but if you're tight on cash and don't mind dealing with constant little issues, this will work, you just have to deal with it.

5 star when it works, but it failed right after ONLY 1 month!

The QC of the ATEM is a joke. My friend bought a ATEM MINI EXTREME ISO and found out the network had problems that it cannot be assigned an IP correctly (only 0.0.0.0). And I bought the same model and it failed right after one month. When plugging in the power, ATEM's fan inside will keep spinning and 99% of the buttons froze and won't respond at all. On PROGRAM output was the colorful spots all over the screen (like the no signal screen back in CRT era). And I had to pay for the shipping and insurance to ship it back to BMD for repair. This is happening merely 30 days after my purchase of the brand new product!I loved it when it worked. I am not confident how long it will last for a device worth over a grand.

The ease of use is outstanding; with your iPad, you can simply touch the MixEffect Pro preset and change the SuperSource layout in a breeze.BONUS TIP: If you use Companion, you can also map the SuperSource MixEffect Pro presets to a 32-key Stream Deck, allowing you to enjoy the tactile feel of physical buttons. If you don’t need to save every single camera source, you can avoid the ISO version and save yourself a couple of hundred bucks. In my opinion, this is the best video streaming switcher available under $1,000. The combination of SuperSource and MixEffect Pro alone makes it worth every penny. Highly recommended!

EXTREME INDEED - NEW ATEM IS GREAT, BUT...
27 April 2021

Purchased the ATEM Mini Extreme ISO having owned previous models and hardware from BMD. This unit is almost a dream for the desktop producer but has some features that keep it from being truly a reliable professional option for field operators. One of my very first uses resulted in a disappointing result. I recorded a short test video and although the signal showed it recording, no file was found on the hard drive later. This has a dual point of concern: one that the video did not record to the SSD (Samsung T5) and the other that the device proved to be unreliable as there was no way to playback or check the video until it was done recording. This has a dual point of concern: one that the video did not record to the SSD (Samsung T5) and the other that the device proved to be unreliable as there was no way to playback or check the video until it was done recording. I am very hesitant in using this on critical live work.My previous ATEM Studio HD setup uses the dual-slot Hyperdeck Recorder. This unit has proven to be very reliable when capturing video from the ATEM and you can see the file being generated on FTP or on the ATEM control panel as long as the Hyperdeck is connected. Alas, on the Extreme this is not the case that I have been able to see.Another disappointing note about this unit is when I connect the SSD to an M1 Macbook, the files recorded in ISO across the 8 channels result in a MASSIVE file, often with sources that are not available. The computer can't seem to read these files and shows blank on my Apple M1 Macbook. As a suggestion, Blackmagic should consider a dashboard on the Control Software that allows you to turn on and off certain sources to avoid recording unnecessary files and jamming the SSD.Ok, those are the most annoying items on the ATEM.What this ATEM can do in comparison with other ATEMs accross the Blackmagic line is just brilliant.Having a Super Source, multiple DSK's, and up to 4 Downstream Keys that give you unprecedented production power at this price point is not understated.Other features include camera control and adjustments, sound control, at least in volume, a comprehensive routing system on the hardware itself, and several transition effects, found on its little brothers.Having multiple HDMI outs and a Headphone jack demonstrates that BMD has been listening to their user base. This unit is ample and indeed Extreme for most Desktop publishers that want to up their zoom or Skype game. But the hardware offers opportunities far beyond that, making it a perfect future-proofed piece of kit.As a BMPCC 6K owner, this unit has been a time saver when setting up and matching cameras from the Producer chair. If a camera is slightly out of focus, I can push a button on the ATEM and snap it into focus. (Fast Auto Lens is required on the camera). Color matching is also useful when using more than one camera on the same set.The Super-source feature is by far the best excuse to buy this. Can really upgrade your presentations and recordings with this feature alone, found in much more expensive devices.

Excellent ATEM for House of Worship Use
15 February 2022

I thought the Blackmagic ATEM Mini Extreme ISO would be overkill for our use, but we are already anticipating using most of its features! For example, we thought we would never need more than 4 inputs, but now realize that 8 inputs will be just about right as we move forward. We also didn't think we would need the ISO feature, to be able to re-edit a session. But it quickly became essential once a couple of real-time flubs happened, that we needed to edit before archiving the video. We KNEW we wouldn't need to control our cameras remotely-until we discovered how cool (and essential) THAT has become, once we tried using it with a couple BMD 4k Pocket Cameras (itself maybe the best camera of it's kind available right now).I hadn't even thought about the ON-AIR ... MoreI thought the Blackmagic ATEM Mini Extreme ISO would be overkill for our use, but we are already anticipating using most of its features! For example, we thought we would never need more than 4 inputs, but now realize that 8 inputs will be just about right as we move forward. We also didn't think we would need the ISO feature, to be able to re-edit a session. Very nice.I can go one about other features, but my advice is to skip the lesser ATEM models and spring for this more expensive one. I believe it's worth it in the long run.

Incredibly good value for what it offers - but lots to learn
20 August 2021

First point is when you see this beast, the term "mini" is lost on this one. Not only does the have 8 inputs, but a whole rack of additional buttons, this is MASSIVE. Compared with the original Mini, which I upgraded from, it's amazing they are part of the same series. The extreme models boast dual HDMI output, downstream, upstream keyers and so on.. The ISO allows separate recordings from each input, in addition to the final mix. This is SO incredibly useful if your cameras cannot record as well as stream. Even if they can, having all mixes on a single disk is very useful. If you don't need that, then the standard Extreme should do, but with the price difference and if you can push to the ISO model, just do it.The other great feature is Super Source. If you don't need that, then the standard Extreme should do, but with the price difference and if you can push to the ISO model, just do it.The other great feature is Super Source. This is a feature borrowed from Blackmagic's more advanced line of production switchers. It's very basic out of the box, and needs some configuration. There are 3rd party add-ons to help not only do this easily, but to even animate the supersouce feeds.Unlike the standard Atem Minis, the Extremes require a lot of learning to discover all features, so dedicate time to doing so. This is such an issue I kept my original Atem Mini as a backup, and also for training purposes. What's amazing about that is its simplicity. It just does what you want it to do. The Extremes do a whole lot more but that's going to take some serious time and head scratching. For me, the clincher was the 8 inputs coupled with ability to record onto tiny disks from all feeds. That in itself makes this item completely worthwhile. My only criticism of the Atem Mini line, is they need mains power. You could run off a battery but you'd need a considerable sized one to drive this unit for hours on end. I looked into V-Mount batteries but even then you'd be looking at 2-3 for a day's filming. It's exciting times and I cannot wait to see what Blackmagic come up with next. With the price drop, it makes this unit a lot more attractive if the recording capability is of value to you.

Nice upgrade from the ATEM Mini Pro ISO
22 April 2021

PROS: This is my 3rd switcher in a year. In September, I upgraded from my beloved V-1HD to the ATEM Mini Pro ISO in order to get the timecode synced individual recordings of each camera, the DaVinci Resolve file with cuts saved, the built in encoder, and the built in webcam option. I miss the T-Bar and knobs from the Roland for adjusting the PiP DVEs, but other than that it was a solid upgrade. Then BMD introduced the Extremes and I couldn't resist. This ATEM Mini Extreme switcher adds and extra HDMI OUT (2) for multi view AND venue projection. It adds an extra (2) USB-C Port for recording AND webcam use. It's also nice to be able to choose the DVE source right on the switcher, have your favorite macros accessible with a physical button, and choose the HDMI ... MorePROS: This is my 3rd switcher in a year. This reminds me that the audio handling in the ATEM Software Control is amazing. You can adjust background sounds like computer fans, etc to be virtually silent. This was a sore spot with the now discontinued V-1HD, because that fan was LOUD. That didn't matter as much in ambient-noisy conference settings, but in studio it was a killer and I ended up modifying the switcher to try to eliminate it. (Video of that adventure is on YT.)CONS: I don't see myself buying any BMD Pocket Cinemas (budget reasons) , so that whole row of 8x6 BMD PCC buttons is useless to me. I wish those were configurable to Macros. I'm not taking any stars off for this, because this is decidedly the best switcher under $1500 that money can buy.

So many issues after 2 weeks of use!
4 December 2021

I got this atem extreme iso two weeks ago and was happily using it since then. Today I ran into a very strange issue. I was using only two HDMI inputs (1 and 2). Nothing plugged in any of the other 6 inputs.1) Today I noticed that the light button for the 3rd HDMI input was showing strange gradient red. It did not matter which input button I press that this one always stayed partially lighted in red.2) Then suddenly 'all' the lighted buttons (including the tiny buttons) were flickering at random. I was in the middle of a broadcast and I got worried even though the broadcasting was going on.3) Then came the horrible problem - the ISO recording. At the end, the ISO recording could not be stopped at all. At the end, the ISO recording could not be stopped at all. It did not matter how hard or how many times I press the stop button and wait but the recording wouldn't stop.! I tried to stop using the console app as well. Finally, I had to literally pull the power plug. When I did, I noticed that the recording was incomplete at the end.. It was the same ssd that I used for so many days and had so much of free space too. It gave about 400 MB/s write speed for me when tested with BlackMagic Speed Test.May be this happened only to me, or may be a firmware issue I don't know, but I want the users to know what I ran into. Luckily it was within my warranty period to return.

This ATEM WILL serve ALL your needs!
1 September 2021

This review is not necessarily reviewing the device but B&H's exemplary customer service but I will touch on the device as well. On March 30, 2021 our club, a registered non-profit, purchased an ATEM Mini Pro model to help assist our club to perform hybrid style Zoom meetings when the world started to open back up following the COVID-19 Pandemic but then the opening got delayed for a little while longer after we received our device. Once the country started opening back up fully, I decided to go ahead an unbox the ATEM Mini Pro in July 2021 and set it up for use. It was then when I realized that this device had some limitations for our needs. Once the country started opening back up fully, I decided to go ahead an unbox the ATEM Mini Pro in July 2021 and set it up for use. It was then when I realized that this device had some limitations for our needs. It was also at this time that I found out that Blackmagic Design released a new device, the ATEM Mini Extreme and after looking at all the specs, this device appeared to do everything we would need and then some. It has two USB outputs instead of one. It has two HDMI outputs instead of one and it is way more versatile and capable than any other ATEM Mini device. The main reason I am giving this review 5 stars is because I absolutely love this device and every day I learn something new that it can do but I also never shared how we got to this point and this is where B&H's customer service comes into play. A friend of mine and I were talking about the ATEM Extreme and he told me that he was able to exchange an ATEM Pro ISO that he purchased prior but was just outside the 30 day return period and he advised me to try and do the same so I started an e-mail string with Zev M. and they looked into it for a little while and after about two weeks got back with me allowing me to return the ATEM Mini Pro that we purchased 4 months prior in exchange for the ATEM Mini Extreme so I cannot say anything bad about this company because they go above and beyond to keep their customers happy. They definitely have a happy customer here. Thank you B&H!!!

Very Foregiving, easy way to switch cameras
15 May 2024

I was having problems that were simple drop-outs. This switcher is not picky about what video signal is given or what brand camera you prefer, or when cameras cut-out. This switcher has a signal or not and recovers when the video comes back. No problems with streaming. Worth recommending to any multi camera shoot.
