The Ultrastudio3G just tanked it's last client zoom meeting. I'm so embarassed. This must be the famous Blackmagic driver and reliability dance you've all been talking about. I have tried every configuration of hardware, signal flow, sample rate, and driver settings. I have disabled and enabled and re-installed a dozen PC components. I hate this small $100 box ...so much.-Embedded audio seems to only work when it's fully rested and feels like performing.-HDMI audio is extremely distorted/out of sync/something/choppy/useless/unuseable-audio works just long enough to RUIN an event or stream (OSX)- incredibly inconsistent audio and connection issues (win10/OSX)- OCCASIONAL BLACK FRAMES, REGARDLESS OF SOFTWARE BUFFER SETTINGS (OBS, vMIX)Blackmagic just ... MoreThe Ultrastudio3G just tanked it's last client zoom meeting. I use U-TAP SDI's hundreds of times a year, and haven't had any audio or frame drop issues. Experience with the UTAP is why I am so angry. The UTAP works flawlessly, without drivers. It works plug-and-play. There is nothing to configure. There is nothing to break or fail or disappoint you.

Bought to use with my M1 MacBook Air and I gotta say - I love how chunky it feels. It inspires confidence that it's not some cheap knock off from Amazon. The only negatives are:1) There isn't a Thunderbolt cable in the box.2) It was a little confusing as to what software I needed to download to control it. Even going to blackmagicdesign.com/welcome took me to the support page where I had to guess what I needed. I downloaded Blackmagic Desktop Video and hoped it worked. During the install it does tell you what compatible products work with it. Just a bit of a learning curve for a novice.Aside from that - all good!

Solid product so far with no technical issues. Thunderbolt 3 is limiting but it allows for a great price point so it's a good compromise if you have a decently new computer.Only reason why I'm not giving it 5 five stars, and this may be due to something technical issue on my end, is that I can't seem to use the device for only audio capture (ie connecting a camera that has audio running into). I tried using Resolve, Quicktime, and Audacity and unless you are capturing video you can't seem to be able to extract just an audio feed. That being said it is working great for what I needed for, which is to interface with online video conferencing software such as Zoom and Skype. Skype still has a bug in it which requires a hack in order to connect any external camera so ... MoreSolid product so far with no technical issues. It's not the adapter's issue. It does work straight out of the box, after installing the firmware, with Zoom, quicktime, etc.

Blackmagic can be slow to update Desktop video to work with the latest Mac OS and this has caused issues. Again the hardware can be working fine, but if the software has an issue, this device won't work. Also, test your setup with the platform you plan on using to capture your video signal. We typically use Telestream Wirecast because it can convert any signal into a webcam, which pretty much solves any compatibility issues with web meeting platforms (Zoom, Teams, etc). With that said, even Wirecast can't see the signal if Desktop video isn't working. My other recommendation, if you go with these, and yes we use them, have a backup. We also have a capture device from AJA. Over the years we have only had one UltraStudio die, but for the price, buy two.
I bought this with a USB-C to USB 3.1 cable thinking I could use it on my non-Thunderbolt 3 PC. That will not work. This will only work with Thunderbolt 3 and only with a Thunderbolt 3 cable that is not included. Getting my 2016 Macbook Pro to recognize this was challenging and involved reinstalling the drivers a few times and catching the Security settings at the right moment. Even after the Mac finally recognized the device, Zoom would only see it as a microphone if I was also running OBS at the same time, even though I wasn't using OBS for anything else. I thought this would work better than my HDMI Video Capture device and the SDI to HDMI converter I have to use, but until I have a better Mac to replace my PC with, I can't use this device just yet.
I have never in my 10+ years of working with A/V professionally worked with a company so unreliable and convoluted. I have never seen gear so poorly quality checked (I have seen BRAND NEW BM Cameras come out of the box BRICKED). I have never had such terrible technical support experiences (currently on hold for 20min, only 10 more callers to go!). I have never had devices work fine consistently and then BOOM not anymore.AVOID BLACKMAGIC AT ALL COSTS. IF YOU'RE NOT STUCK WITH SONY'S GARBAGE PSF FORMAT THEN BUY THE AJA U-TAP.This company is garbage. Bad build quality, bad support, completely unreliable.
If you use Premiere, and edit in 4K there is a major downside with this box.You can set Premiere to scale down the resolution to the highest resolution the Monitor 3G can support (which is the only option). This is 2K 2048x1080, which is a different aspect ratio than 3840x2160. So for me, this squashes the image vertically and shows letterboxing on my broadcast monitor. The BMD video control panel cannot change the 2K output to 1080p either. After spending days with BMD support, Flanders support, and forums the only work-around is to edit in 1920x1080 not 4K, and then copy everything into a 4K sequence before exporting. As many of you know, this isn't always smooth and is a hassle at best.
I originally purchased a UltraStudio Monitor 3G in Sept 2021. It's been working great up until recently when I started having some issues with my external monitor not connecting consistently. To test my equipment, I bought a second UltraStudio Monitor 3G. It turned out the connectivity issue was from my 2020 iMac. I bought a new MacStudio and connected the original UltraStudio 3G and it's been working great so far.My review is a testament to how good the UltraStudio is. Three-plus years since I bought the original one and it's still going strong. It outlasted my 2020 iMac.
We have had a decent amount of problems with these boxes. We have been through two of them now. The box has connected to the computer just fine, but both the SDI and HDMI feeds will drop feed randomly with no warning. This box seemed to work for us for a few months being used once a week, then it suddenly stopped working. At times it would cary audio but no video, at other times it would display a bright pink screen with no audio. Then it would show video with no audio. We tried it out with two different M1 Mac Minis and ordered two of these boxes with the same result. Up to date software was installed. Video feeds pushed to the box were working and within the supported frame rate and resolution. It's a good box until it dropped the feed. Then I couldn't trust it ... MoreWe have had a decent amount of problems with these boxes. We have been through two of them now. My use case for this is streaming Wii gameplay (after converting composite to HDMI of course). Audio and visual comes through perfectly. Make sure to download the Blackmagic Desktop Video Setup tool from the Blackmagic website. It lets you configure which input to use, between SDI or HDMI, and it also tells you what resolution and fps it’s seeing. This tool will be important if you intend to use the recorder for HDMI since it defaults to SDI.I also have the Elgato 4K X capture card, and it works for many situations, but this Blackmagic Recorder is certainly more reliable and industrial in quality. If you’re split between Elgato and Blackmagic, definitely pick this one.I haven’t used this for capturing SDI, so I can’t speak to its performance, but it’s likely ... MoreMy use case for this is streaming Wii gameplay (after converting composite to HDMI of course).
