Almost perfect

For the home hobbyist this is almost perfect. Range of speeds will cover all you'll ever realistically need and o so easy to change with no faffing of belts. Laser indicator was spot on and the digital depth gate works a treat. This machine is also very quiet with little to no vibration. Only grumble is that the lowering wheel can be awkward if you're working on a piece with a lot of depth travel (I've seen a good fix using a truckers steering nob). I could see frustrations with the integrated footplate and work table as you're unable to change the angle of attack and so anything other than 90° could be troublesome. All in all you get what you pay for and especially with tools. So I'd recommend the investment.

This is a very user friendly pillar drill, no messing about adjusting belts which in human nature is not going to happen, so by click of a switch or button makes acurate drilling so easy at the correct speed. maybe slightly dearer than cheaper belt driven options but absolutely worth the extra investment. It also has a laser for accurate drilling and a LED background light:)Homebase quoted a very good price as a new customer and arrived promply in good condition.

Excellent drill press, poor ergonomics

This drill press is functionally superb. No belts to change, plenty of power and the digital control works very well. The LCD RPM and depth gauge work excellently and I was pleasantly surprised that the laser is spot-on accurate too.The biggest issue I have with this, is the absolutely terrible handle design. It's a wheel, instead of a 3 or 4 spoke lever as is usually on a drill press. Basically, the issue is that when you grab the wheel and pull it down, you barely travel any distance at all. you need more than 3 really long pulls to get the whole length of travel, so you can't drill one handed through most objects unless they're very thin. It also strains your wrist when at the very top and bottom of the wheel. I tend to clamp it as best I can, walk round the ... MoreThis drill press is functionally superb. I tend to clamp it as best I can, walk round the side and use two hands like a steering wheel for proper control but that means less control of the workpiece itself. There are some 3D printed handle options, but for anyone who doesn't have a 3D printer, you might find the stock handle rather annoying. Try it out in store first would be my recommendation.Doesn't affect the rest of the awesome features, but it really doesn't make sense that they made such an awesome drill press and then put such a poorly designed handle on it. The handle is actually very nicely made of solid metal and great rubber, just the ergonomics of it are terrible.

Good for Price and Size
22 March 2023

Ive been using this little drill for a while now going through steel and holes its definitely not rated for. Id say you get a pretty good deal on what you pay for. Dont expect to turn this thing into a production line machine however for the hobbyist its an effective little machine. The only thing i could critic is that it has bogged down on me a handful of times but that was mostly me being a bully. The laser aiming is cool but its only a suggestion in my opinion.

Great drill press
8 September 2023

The Bosch 710W drill press is a great purchase for the home handyman or serious DIYer. The large die cast base gives great stability. The built in clamp is great for most jobs, holding the piece in place securely. The press has a good range and is easily lengthened or shortened to suit most jobs. The depth gauge is easy to use. Overall, I am very happy with this purchase so far (about 8 weeks use) and would recommend to others.

I like everything about this bench drill!
21 May 2020

I have the green model and am happy to accept the tiny amount of runout present. Power aplenty, smooth movements and 93.8 mm spindle throw! The only thing to watch out for (I learnt this the hard way!) is to ensure to set up the laser cross hairs from a “close-to-the-work-piece position. If you have a long travel down to the starting point you may be out by 1 - 2 mm or more. Once I learnt this I had no further disasters. Some reviews on You Tube suggest swapping the wheel for a traditional triple-star handle. I found the supplied wheel fine.I have raised the base plate up about 90mm from my bench, built a shallow tray underneath to catch some of the shavings and swarf and that allows me to store the backstop as well.I like the soft start feature and the large ... MoreI have the green model and am happy to accept the tiny amount of runout present. The laser beams are partly obscured by the drill bits but this can be overcome with a bit of practise. The clamp is initially a bit odd but works for most woodwork. I prefer a traditional drill press vice for metal though. Finally, the price is excellent for what you get and, with a 3 yr warranty, I feel I have a great new product to enjoy.

Neat and light unit, happy with my choice
24 June 2022

Interesting alternative to a traditional pulley driven pillar drill. I chose this over the alternative because my colleague and friend recommended it. It's light so it can be moved, the speed control is very convenient as it saves all the messing about with guards and belt tensioning. The light is handy, but could be brighter and laser sight is ok for rough working but no substitute for a centre punched mark. The action is ok, perhaps not quite as smooth as traditional units. I find the drill powerful enough for my light use if a bit noisier than induction motor types. I have not tried the drill depth feature yet but it looks very neat. Happy with my choice.

Review of Bosch PBD40 710W Bench Pillar Drill Variable Speed
25 June 2022

Lovely drill, runs smoothly and has some excellent features, such as a handy workpiece clamp and adjustable guide, built in work light and a useful laser targeting cross.Has an easily adjusted height and a useful 90mm drill depth. Much better than my original 50mm depth pillar drill.Speed settings are great, nice digital read out for speed and depth stop. Some people have commented on the chuck being a bit inaccurate, but I haven't run into this on my unit. Even if I did, I know there are alternative chucks which could be fitted.

Review of Bosch PBD40 710W Bench Pillar Drill Variable Speed + 25 Piece HSS Drill Bit Set
17 November 2022

Great on paper, very poor implementation, lots of major issues. Way overpriced, there is better out there for the money. Would not recommend! I spoke with Bosch regarding major 'wobble' issue and were they going to recall product to remediate? They said no and started to tell me how to work around the issue, what a joke! I expect would expect such a flaw with a £50 Chinese piece of junk not a £300 Bosch product.

Solid Bench Drill
26 January 2022

This bench drill is lightweight but very solid & compact. The spring loaded hand wheel gives positive feedback, once you get used to it. (I have been used to using conventional rack & pinion driven drill handles for the last 40 years). The accuracy and run out on the chuck/spindle is very good, even for drilling accurate hole positions in steel. The Laser is a good feature when aligning holes that require drilling diametrically opposite. Although when you use an extended drill chuck one side of the laser is blocked out. The work light is very bright which saves putting on the garage lights on a dull day. A little bit pricey for a bench drill but overall if it proves to be reliable for a couple of years it will have been worth it.
