A great sounding portable speaker

The Bose Music app is a great addition with all of its features. I especially like the treble and bass adjustment, the custom radio presets and other misc. settings. I sometimes pair it with my Bose 500 and together they can really fill a room and sound amazing. So I tested it again after draining the battery. This time it is even worst, 1 week of not using them from 100% it went down to 69%. On the 2nd week 0%. I started looking up issues of the product. And I have tried restarting it to factory default and removing all connection (alexa and my partner's phone) including mine and charge it to 100%. So now I am waiting in frustration...By the way, my friend's unit is fine.I did ask the staff for a replacement but based on the policy it has to be sent to repair first. And also, when I bought the unit, the box seemed to be a refurbished unit. I they should mention it to the customer if it is a refurbish or not. That way it will be the customers liability if they accept it.

Bose Portable Home (Smart) Speaker vs Sonos Move

I have both the Bose Portable Home Smart Speaker and the Sonos Move. If all I wanted was a portable speaker I certainly could’ve spent less and gone with a bluetooth-only model, but I like the ability to have a portable speaker that is used primarily at home where I can easily connect from my iPhone/iPad using Wi-Fi and AirPlay 2. So between just the two? I like the aforementioned Bose slightly more than the Sonos. But just slightly.Portability/Charging…The Bose is smaller, lighter and just much more pleasant to carry around than the Sonos. So between just the two? I like the aforementioned Bose slightly more than the Sonos. But just slightly.Portability/Charging…The Bose is smaller, lighter and just much more pleasant to carry around than the Sonos. Additionally, for convenience, should I ever take these speakers traveling, the Bose so far has accepted all the old USB-C chargers I’ve got sitting around. However, the Sonos despite also having a USB-C charging port, is apparently pickier about which chargers it will work with because none of my USB-C chargers will charge the Sonos. Speaking of charging, though, I highly recommend getting Bose’s optional charging base. Prior to buying that I was always running out of power despite me thinking I had turned the speaker off. At the new higher MSRP that Bose charges for this speaker nowadays it’s too bad it isn’t just included in the box.As for sound quality…At quieter to moderate volume levels I slightly prefer the sound of the Bose. At louder volumes my preference shifts slightly toward the Sonos. I tend to listen at lower volumes, and as such I appreciate the Bose’s sound signature because its treble is easier to hear at lower volumes than it is on the Sonos, in my opinion. I think the Sonos Move’s treble is somewhat dull in comparison—more so at quieter volumes, less so at higher volumes. (Note: For additional comparison, I also own a couple Sonos One’s and a Sonos Five; those speakers also have more detailed treble than the Sonos Move, in my opinion, despite adjusting the EQ up a tad.)My slight preference for the Bose Portable aside, I’ll admit that the sound is clearly colored and has a little bit of what I guess is the, ahem, “Bose sound” whether good or bad. It’s pleasant enough, but listeners with a trained ear for Hi-Fi probably think it’s bad. Bass fanatics might initially be pleased with the Bose, but in a direct comparison across quite a number of different songs it becomes apparent that the much larger and heavier Sonos Move is capable of a bigger bass sound. The actual frequencies it plays may not be a whole lot deeper than what the Bose can do, but the Sonos presents them in such a way that bass is much more apparent and room filling, though, still not room shaking. At similarly moderate to “loud-ish” volumes the Sonos’ bass almost makes the Bose sound hollow, which I maybe wouldn’t have noticed without a direct comparison between the two.Apps/Music Services…Something that knocks down the score of the Bose Portable is its app and its lack of compatible music services, even managing to miss some major ones. This isn’t a big deal if you’re using AirPlay 2 or Bluetooth exclusively, but it’s a pretty big deal if you need to use the app. The Bose Music app also disappointingly only works in a portrait position and not in a landscape position, despite being an official iPad app (as opposed to just an iPhone app). The Sonos app is better as it has practically every music service available and works in landscape mode on an iPad.Voice Assistants/Music Services, again…As for the built-in voice assistants, I’ve not used them on either speaker. But from my understanding both the Bose and Sonos are more limited in what music services they are compatible with via voice commands than what say a Google Nest Mini is capable of. As such, just because you can set a particular music service as the default in your Google Home app, it doesn’t necessarily mean you can actually use that service with your Bose Portable or Sonos Move via Google Assistant voice commands. Apparently not all Google Assistant capable speakers are equal when it comes to functionality. That said, from what I’ve read the Sonos apparently is compatible with more music services when using voice assistants than the Bose is.Conclusion:As I mentioned in the beginning, I have a slight preference toward the Bose Portable Home Smart Speaker. But if the treble in the Sonos Move could’ve been a tad brighter, like say, if the Sonos Move had the exact same treble and detail as the Sonos One or Sonos Five, then I would’ve easily preferred the Sonos Move over the Bose Portable despite it being heavier and otherwise less suited to travel. As it stands, neither speaker is perfect (especially at these price points) and they each have pros and cons. And I certainly wouldn’t fault anyone for getting the Sonos. After all, most reviews on the Internet seem to indicate the Sonos is actually the speaker with the better sound quality and since it includes a charging bass it might actually be the better value now.***Note: From what I can tell, at some point Bose decided to rename this product from the “Bose Portable Home Speaker with Voice Assistants” to the simplified “Bose Portable Smart Speaker”. Best Buy seems to think they’re the same product according to my purchase history. I, too, think its the same identical speaker, fwiw.***

It’s all about sound clarity & Design

At the outset, this is a typical Bose product with all the same qualities that Customers would expect from the brand - small foot print, good audio clarity, decent battery life, minimalistic/clean design, well balanced/rounded music. I use it in my kitchen (well mostly plan to keep this indoor) and it sounds great. Without getting into technicalities like drivers, tweeters, passive radiators or audio excursion, as a end user I feel non-bass (pretty average on low frequency) music is better savored in Bose. I hope the world by now has come to embrace the fact that Bose as a brand isn’t (and has never been) the market leader in bass. That has never been their selling point. So I don’t view that as even a factor worth critiquing unless you are comparing this unit to bass-heavy speakers in that price point (or even half the price). Bose has its audience. With all that being said, I still find Bose 500 series audio quality is much better compared to this portable speaker despite being $50 less. Makes you wonder “is that the price Customers should pay for portability?”. That too for a speaker that is not completely waterproof to claim it as Outdoor/Pool party ready, that’s a big compromise. One more suggestion … can we make the plastic top to aluminum or change the nylon handle to leather etc.? When customers spend so much for a portable speaker, premium quality material should be the name of the game :)

Slowly Disappointed...
8 March 2022

I purchased this speaker to use with my 2021 MacBook Pro laptop for listening to music and watching videos on YouTube. The only way to connect this speaker is via Bluetooth as there is no aux jack to plug in with a 3.5mm aux cable. It was fine when initially using it for listening to music. I noticed a 1/2 second delay before my music started playing, but wasn't too bothered by that. Upon going to YouTube, I also experienced a slight delay before my video would play, but the sound was still syncing. It was when I started playing games on Steam that I saw the real issue. The sounds from my game were about 2 seconds behind the action on the screen and incredibly choppy. I used to have a Bose Soundlink Mini and never had these problems of latency over Bluetooth. The sounds from my game were about 2 seconds behind the action on the screen and incredibly choppy. I used to have a Bose Soundlink Mini and never had these problems of latency over Bluetooth. I actually ordered two of these Portable Home Speakers to use as a pair and when both are connected, the latency is twice as bad. YouTube takes about 2 full seconds to start playing and sometimes the audio is out of sync. It is definitely the speakers because when I use the Bose NC700 headphones over bluetooth, I get no latency issues at all and everything runs smoothly. I will say that the speakers work great with my iPod Touch Gen 7 and no issues arose. I would recommend this speaker for anyone using a mobile device such as a phone or tablet. The speakers sound top notch to my ears and have quite a bit of bass to it which will shake your desk. I would have kept them if not for the latency issues as I loved everything else about the speakers. If not using it with a Mac computer, I say buy it!

Solid Speaker
30 September 2022

I got my speaker probably about a week ago and it has been a very good speaker thus far. The build quality of the speaker is next to none and feels very premium. The highs and mids are crisp and clear and the bass is smooth. Side note, If you throw it into a corner the bass basically doubles and actually is pretty impressive for a speaker its size. The 360 audio is a great way to fill rooms of all sizes and the speaker gets really loud for its size. The buttons on top work great and the smart features such as Alexa or Google work perfectly as well. I have had no issues with the app either. The base charger for the speaker is a must in my opinion. My only complaint is that I think the price is a little high in my opinion but no complains.

Sound quality amazing; battery life very poor

Speaker is wonky. I don’t write reviews often and when I do they are almost exclusively positive. The issue I have with this speaker is twofold. First, the battery life is not all that it is advertised by Bose to be. On this point, after charging it to 100% for the first time, it somehow died after at max 2 hours of use. Since then, I have continued to be unimpressed by the battery life. I have also noticed extremely slow charge times, which I estimate are roughly twice as long as Bose advertises. I probably have a faulty product but I am too busy to go through some onerous process to ship in my product that’ll leave me without the product to use at all for who knows how long. My second issue has been connectivity. It’s too complicated. I know how to make it work, ... MoreSpeaker is wonky. I don’t write reviews often and when I do they are almost exclusively positive. My second issue has been connectivity. It’s too complicated. I know how to make it work, but it is too complicated. I’ve had some glitchy stuff occur that from perspective is a manufacturer issue, not user error. I’m pretty tech savvy and have extensive experience with A/V equipment, semiconductors, electronics, etc. Something just ain’t right. If I had to guess, Bose made this product to compete with similar Wi-Fi portable speakers such as those made by Sonos. Regardless of these two issues I decided to keep the Bose Portable speaker. Why? The sound quality is amazing. It is artful. I love the Bose Music app that allows me to customize the treble & base. if the battery life issue is specific to my product and assuming I will get around to submitting a warranty claim to Bose and hoping they quickly fix it, then I would easily rate this a 5 star device. Connectivity issues can be worked around, but a short lasting battery that takes 5+ hours to charge is a pretty big detractor and keeps me from being able to highly recommend this speaker.

The best of every world.

To preface this review, I've left 2 other reviews on the Bose Smart Speaker 500 and Bose Soundlink Revolve+ II which I will be referencing from. Initially, I bought the Smart Speaker 500 and was a little shaky as to whether or not it was worth the money. In the end, I'm very satisfied with the 500 but the same cannot be said about the Revolve+ II. I shredded the Revolve+ II in a review, and returned it. However, I decided to give Bose another shot at redemption and bought the Portable Smart Speaker. This speaker is the much better option of the 2. Each Bose speaker I've owned had its positives and negatives, but this one doesn't really have many negatives. However, I decided to give Bose another shot at redemption and bought the Portable Smart Speaker. This speaker is the much better option of the 2. Each Bose speaker I've owned had its positives and negatives, but this one doesn't really have many negatives. To start with, this speaker is supported by the Bose App. This is such a blessing and one of those "you don't realize what you have until it's gone" sort of deals. The Revolve+ II does not and I believe this to be the biggest game changer between the Revolve+ II and the Portable Smart Speaker. Well that and the added bass modules in the top of the speaker are what truly make this a *chef's kiss* masterpiece. My main complaint with the Revolve is that I didn't feel like it had the signature "Bose touch" that every other speaker or pair of headphones they make have. With the Portable Smart Speaker, it definitely has that midas touch, if you will. There's not really much to say about the audio quality other than it's phenomenal, as Bose products usually are. Thumping bass if you want it, clear mids, and a crisp treble really top this off as one of the best speakers on the market. However, there are a couple shortcomings. First off, the battery life isn't great but it'll do. If there's one thing you trade off for superior audio quality, it's battery life. Most speakers boast a 16 - 18 hour battery life with some even going up to 24+. The Portable Smart Speaker comes with a 12 hour battery life, that I haven't personally tested. But from what I can tell, it's pretty close to 12 hours which isn't bad but it's not great. Second, and this is probably the big one, it still suffers to its design. That was a main complaint from the Revolve was that I felt like the 360° audio was a gimmick rather than a selling point. With the Portable Smart Speaker, it's not nearly as bad but there is a bit of audio degradation. Again it's a trade off for consistent audio quality from any direction rather than amazing audio quality in just one direction. But with the way you can customize the settings in the app, it's not something driving me away from the speaker. Another downside is the "grouping" feature through the app. I've found that grouping them in the app causes them to lose connection with each other every couple minutes or so. Which is not what I'm looking for in 2 $400 speakers (Bose Smart Speaker 500 and Bose Portable Smart Speaker). I have found a work around thru connecting them via Airplay. That causes no problems so that tells me it's an app connectivity issue and not a speaker issue. My final "problem" with the speaker is that it's considerably more expensive than the Revolve. It's even more expensive than the Bose Smart Speaker 500, and I feel like the Smart Speaker 500 has better audio quality. However it's only $30 more from the 500 but $70 more than the Revolve. I'm not saying it's too overpriced, overpriced yes but not too overpriced. I guess this is more of a rip on the Revolve than the Portable Smart Speaker. It almost felt insulting that something only $70 less is considerably and much worse. It's like going to the movies and the small popcorn is $5 and the large is $15 but the medium is $13. It feels like a marketing technique to get me to upgrade to the better speaker for less of a price difference than it should be.Overall though, this is an all around amazing speaker. Extraordinary sound quality with ease of use brought to you by Bose. If you're thinking about picking this bad boy up, please do. You'll thank yourself later.

Unreliable.

I purchased two brand new Bose portable smart speakers and have had problem after problem. It’s as if they haven’t perfected the technology but still put It out there. Most of the issues have to do with the speaker just not responding to commands or shutting off unprovoked. Tell it to play music and it will begin playing then stop. Then tell it to play again and it says it’s already playing. Ask it to adjust the volume, doesn’t do it. Many times after a command there’s no response at all from the speaker. Customer service has been good as they have tried different fixes, many calls, hours spent; and while we are on the phone it will work. Then i go to use it again, problem! The sound quality is nice. Very Pleased with Bose Personal Speaker purchase!
2 December 2022

Bose Personal Speaker was easy to setup via bluebooth and Wi-fi, which does provide better uncompressed sound quality over bluetooth. The richness of the sound is amazing! Provides just the right balance between highs and lows with a slight adjustment from the Bose Music app. I was a little confused at first on how to play music after connecting via Wi-fi, but learned that you use the Chromecast feature on Android and Airplay on iOS. When I place speaker in center of my living room there are no areas lacking the full sound experience. You can't even tell where the speaker is when moving about the room if not looking right at it. Great buy! Would definitely recommend.
