I am writing this review from the perspective of someone that does home theater as a hobby and currently has a full receiver and surround speaker system set up in my living room. I had never had experience with a soundbar so this was an exciting and interesting experience. The first thing I observed about the Bose was the quality of the packaging and build of the soundbar. It is packed with thick protective foam all around and includes both types of cables (hdmi and optical) you should need to connect it to your source. It also includes a nice compact remote and power cord. The last soundbar I saw in operation (not mine) was many years ago and was a very large lower quality item. Therefore, I was surprised at the compact size and weight of the Bose. I view soundbars as a solution for someone that wants to upgrade their sound from the usually weak (due to the shrinking thickness of TVs) TV speakers but doesn’t want to set up, operate, or maintain a receiver and speaker system. I think for the average user and TV, this soundbar would probably be a relatively simple setup, but I had issues with connecting the soundbar to my almost new LG OLED television. I believe the issue might be caused by the HDMI “handshake” with the LG. I could only get the sound from the LG TV to the Bose using a certain HDMI cable (not the one included) and then only after a couple of factory resets of the soundbar. I had no issue using the soundbar in our bedroom with our Panasonic TV and that is where it now resides. The soundbar has Atmos capability (surround with simulated “height” channels), but I was not able to get the soundbar to recognize the Atmos format, so I could not test the height effects. The only other issue I have is keeping the soundbar connected to my home network, but the user manual does recommend the unit to be very close to your router, even though I don’t have issue with any of my other home wireless devices even at a distance. As far as the sound, I was very surprised at the amount of sound that comes out of a fairly compact unit. Of course, it cannot match a full speaker system for output, but is definitely better than the alternative. There is also a fair amount of bass that comes out of the system and clear dialog. There is an available subwoofer but I don’t think most folks will need it especially at the added cost. The included remote works well but there is no display to tell you what sound level you are at on the unit or on the TV display. The Bluetooth works well once your device is paired and the optical cable connection works correctly also. Even though this soundbar is a bit pricey, I think it is a good “all in one” solution for those wanting to upgrade their sound quality in a compact package.

An extra smart aspect is Alexa support, but at the time, Alexa use was not unsuccessful. Next, the Bose SimpleSync extends the sound possibilities by allowing synchronized audio play with compatible Bose speakers and headsets. For example, the QuietComfort 45 (QC45) headset can connect to devices that don’t have Bluetooth connectivity. It takes less than 10 seconds to be enable, which is excellent. Also, connecting an additional speaker to create a Speaker Group, you allow yourself to be surrounded by sound. The Bose Music App also gives you the audio sync option with the TV or among the speakers for the perfect viewing and listening experience. The Bose Smart Soundbar 600 is an excellent choice for a soundbar that can stand on its own and produce amazingly rich sound at lower and higher volumes from so many audio sources but can invite so many other Bose products to the party to create a symphony in your household.

The 600 does not include ethernet instead opting for wireless only, but the 600 does include Dolby Atmos which previously required you to make the jump to the 700. What I find to be the most annoying problem is that Dolby Atmos requires eARC support on the TV but eARC is still not the default for most new TVs under 50 inches. Soundbars like the 600, are better suited for smaller rooms where big TVs don’t make sense and so to add Dolby Atmos to a small room you end up with the visual incongruity of an overly large TV just to get the eARC port you need. Sitting beneath the TV too-big-for-the-room is this tiny sound bar that just looks silly - but hey it sounds awesome right? Dolby Atmos upward firing speakers also require ceilings under 6 feet in height to properly reflect the sound so pay attention to the ceiling height of your room if you are interested in Dolby Atmos. What I love about the 600 is how simple it is to integrate with my existing equipment. As I moved the soundbar though my home trying it in different room sizes with TVs from Sony, LG, Samsung and TCL I was happily surprised that I did not have to program anything and most importantly my existing TV remotes were able to control the volume of the soundbar and power the soundbar on and off without me fiddling with any of the settings. This also led me to my one other annoyance which is that there’s no visual display on the TV when adjusting volume, and there’s no real visual display on the soundbar either so unless you go from SUPER LOUD to super quiet, it’s sometimes hard to tell if pressing the volume button is working. The soundbar includes a mobile app, and keeping it connected to Wifi is a good idea as there is a day-0 firmware update needed. There is also a second firmware update on the way to add the Alexa integration which currently is missing from the unit. I’ve always enjoyed Bose products and consider this one another great choice for people who need better sound than the TV speakers but don’t want to install free-standing or in-wall speakers to the room.

MoreThe Bose TV Smart Soundbar 600 is the newest addition to the Bose Smart Soundbar lineup. The new Bose Smart Soundbar 600 has a total of five transducers (speakers) comprised of a front facing tweeter to support clear and intelligible dialog, which is located between two upward firing drivers which produce the high, overhead effects for Dolby Atmos. There are also two drivers at either end of the soundbar, which are oriented to each side at 90°. Those transducers are integrated with elbow shaped audio pipes which are ported internally. As has always been the magic with Bose, the Smart Soundbar 600 is engineered to capitalize on reflected soundwaves from the ceiling and surrounding walls to create the broad and immersive spatial sound that Bose invented and is famous for. The Smart Soundbar 600 has HDMI and optical audio connectivity (both cables are included). The HDMI connection supports HDMI CEC (Consumer Electronics Control), which facilitates the use of a single remote control to operate multiple devices, as well as the basic bidirectional communication which allows one device to control another. Thus, powering on the television will also turn on the soundbar. However, when using HDMI connectivity, the soundbar must be connected to the television’s HDMI ARC / eARC (Audio Return Channel) port. All of the televisions that I am familiar with have only one HDMI-ARC port. Therefore, if there is another connected device which requires ARC (such as a Home Theater system), those devices will be competing for the single HDMI ARC port. The Soundbar 600 does not support 4K pass-through, therefore no external video sources can be passed through to the TV using the Bose soundbar. The Soundbar 600 has only one HDMI port for the audio feed from the source TV. There are no other HDMI ports for connecting other audio or video sources. HDMI ARC / eARC has several advantages over an optical audio connection. Perhaps most important is the capability to support Dolby Atmos, which is one of the significant motivations to select the Smart Soundbar 600. HDMI eARC also has the bandwidth to pass higher resolution audio formats. In the event that the optical cable is utilized in lieu of HDMI ARC / eARC, the Smart Soundbar 600 has an “Auto-Wake” feature which will turn on the soundbar whenever an audio signal is detected through the optical cable. Although optical audio is good, HDMI is superior in several respects. With non-Atmos audio, the “surround sound” and “height” effects of the Bose Smart Soundbar 600 soundbar is synthesized with Bose TrueSpace which upmixes non-Atmos audio to produce the immersive sound that is typical of Bose engineering brilliance, and which capitalizes on reflected sound. The Smart Soundbar 600 soundbar includes Bluetooth 4.2, enabling the soundbar to be utilized as a speaker for streaming music from a smartphone or other Bluetooth audio source. The rear panel of the Bose Smart Soundbar 600 has the AC power cable jack, HDMI eARC port, optical cable input jack, a 3.5mm jack for an IR Blaster, a 3.5mm output jack for connecting an optional Bose Bass Module (if for some reason a cabled connection is selected in lieu of the available wireless connectivity), and a mini-USB jack for service access. The Smart Soundbar 600 soundbar is equipped with a compact remote control with the CR2032, 3 volt lithium battery preinstalled. The Bose remote measures only 1-9/16” x 4-1/8”. The remote includes a Power Button, a TV source button, a Volume control rocker, a Bluetooth source button, a Bose Music App button, a Mute/Unmute button and a Play / Pause button for media control. Some buttons on the remote serve multiple purposes, which are explained in the Bose Soundbar 600 Owner’s Guide. I have held a very favorable opinion of Bose equipment for over 45 years. Bose has a remarkable reputation for brilliantly engineered systems which produce incredible spatial sound using small components including extremely small speaker drivers. I was amazed in the 1970s when I first heard a small pair of Bose bookshelf speakers fill a room with a spatial presence that was incomparable to any conventional, directional speakers. When Best Buy stores equipped their large, CD sales areas (with soaring, warehouse ceilings) with Bose sound systems, it was amazing that the cavernous and noisy space was enveloped in music with incredible fidelity. My last car was factory equipped with an extraordinary Bose audio system, which I still miss a great deal (along with the outstanding car in which it was mounted). Bose speakers capitalize on reflected sound, rather than only direct projection like most speakers. The spatial characteristics are therefore outstanding. Tiny speakers producing large, space filling audio is the Bose claim to fame. When selecting a television soundbar, particularly with the hope of enhancing the clarity of dialog, Bose was the primary choice. The Smart Soundbar 600 is accompanied by a printed quick-start guide, but the full Owner’s Guide must be downloaded from the Bose website. Setting up the Bose Smart Soundbar 600 was simple and straightforward. If you do not already have the Bose Music app on your smartphone, download the app and after creating a Bose account, follow the instructions in the app to complete the initial setup. After pairing the Soundbar 600 with the smartphone via Bluetooth, the Soundbar 600 is then connected to the home Wi-Fi network for software updates and then the Soundbar 600 is connected to the TV via HDMI or Optical Audio. The app also prompts for adding desired streaming music services and configuring Alexa as your voice assistant using the built-in microphone. The app has nice features including setting up an audio favorites list, source selection and audio source controls. The Smart Soundbar 600 has the power supply internal to the housing, thus avoiding another space consuming wall transformer. The physical dimensions of the Bose Smart Soundbar 600 are a very compact 27-3/8” wide x 4” deep x 2-1/8” tall. The black housing is sleek, attractive and modern with a perforated metal front grille. The unit is not heavy at under 7 lbs., but it has a solid and substantial feel to it. A multicolor LED status lamp is present on the upper left of the front housing, but it is often difficult to see, and the colors and illumination patterns displayed require “decoding” with the Owner’s Guide. I selected the Bose Smart Soundbar 600 as an upgrade to the Bose TV Speaker soundbar that we have been enjoying with our bedroom television since 2020. The Soundbar 600 has a superior feature set and more transducers. Unfortunately, I experienced some vexing connectivity, network and potential compatibility issues between the Smart Soundbar 600 and the particular television model for which I obtained the soundbar. I have been in consultation with Bose engineers and hope that these issues will be resolved. It is possible that the problems that I encountered might be attributable to the HDMI-ARC-CEC. I suspect a device discovery or handshake problem. This is my first encounter with problems involving HDMI-ARC-CEC, which has been in use for several years. Connectivity issues with that particular TV model notwithstanding, the Bose Soundbar 600 has otherwise excellent performance and functionality. The audio quality produced by the Bose Smart Soundbar 600 is remarkable, particularly in relationship to its compact dimensions and the quantity and size of the transducers. Television internal speakers sound anemic once the Bose Smart Soundbar 600 replaces them for audio production. At the default bass setting level, the Bose Smart Soundbar 600 demonstrated a lower level of bass response than I had anticipated. However, the Bose Music app provides Audio Settings including the ability to increase or decrease Bass and Treble and to shift the Center Channel and Height Channel. If more impressive bass is desired, a Bose Bass Module (sub-woofer) can be added. The physical appearance of the Bass Module 500 most favorably comports with the Smart Soundbar 600. Across the audible range, the audio sounds clear and undistorted, even at very low and very high volume levels. The sound reproduction is genuinely excellent, and although perhaps not of the level of a 7.1 channel home theater system, it sounds absolutely great and capably fills the room with high-fidelity audio. Audio fidelity with Dolby Atmos as well as with Bose TrueSpace synthesized spatial characteristics were equally impressive throughout the room, even when well off-axis from the television. The entire room was enveloped in the same richness, clarity and fullness of sound. The audio performance of the Bose Smart Soundbar 600 was immediately impressive. All types of programming from dialog heavy news programs to movies with significant music accompanying the dialog all sounded remarkably good and were greatly enhanced. The excellent audio produced by the modestly sized Bose Smart Soundbar 600 was genuinely pleasing and quite impressive. The Bose Smart Soundbar 600 also received a very favorable evaluation from my wife who often finds dialog from the television’s internal speakers difficult to understand clearly. For her benefit, I enabled the “Dialog Mode” in the Bose Music app. My wife was amazed at how clear dialog became with the Bose Smart Soundbar 600, which quite dramatically enhances and clarifies dialog while rendering pleasant and balanced program audio. We think that the Bose Smart Soundbar 600 is excellent, and we are enjoying the enhanced audio that it delivers. I can certainly recommend the Bose Smart Soundbar 600 to anyone who would enjoy watching television with excellent audio reproduction from a compact, unobtrusive and quite remarkable soundbar system.
The setup was easy with the Bose Music App. You need to be on the same Wifi Network on your mobile as where you are trying to setup the soundbar and the app auto detects the soundbar. Also it automatically updates the firmware to ensure that the soundbar has the latest firmware. You can control the Bass, Treble, Center Channel and Height Channel based on your preference. If the soundbar is mounted on the wall, the Wall EQ setting will compensate for it. Also you can stream music available in the app itself for testing. Also the audio quality is much better if you connect HDMI instead of Optical Cable. Chromecast is built in this soundbar hence you can stream audio from apps like Amazon Music etc from your phone. Google Assistant support is via your phone or other assistant devices and you can enable the same under Bose Music App -> Soundbar 600 -> Settings. Also Alexa Assistant is in built in the Soundbar. Pros: 1) Amazing sound in all directions because of the addition of upfiring speakers 2) Crystal Clear sound at high volumes without any distortion even if you set every control at 100% 3) Bass is high for the size of this soundbar and enough for TV watching experience 4) Dolby Atmos Support and other standard surround sounds codecs 5) Integrated Alexa Assistant support and Google Chromecast support 6) You can see the audio codec used from the Bose Music app when you click on what is currently playing 7) You can use the Bose Music App to control it completely and don’t really need the physical remote. 8) Small LED bar showing the status during setup or when you use remote buttons. Rest of the time the LED light is off giving a dark room experience for watching TV. Cons: 1) Not good for home theater like experience (with high bass and strong surround) without the addition of Bass Module and Surround Speakers which is an additional big investment. 2) Also there is no option to connect with Bass Module other than the Bose 500 and 700 Bass Module (like non-Bose Subwoofer or leveraging your existing subwoofer) 3) The Bose Music App doesn’t have shortcut sound setting (like Dance, Rock, Movie etc) or Adapt IQ which automatically sets up the soundbar to sound the best for your type of room. 4) There is no way to know whether the system is on or off. This is not a top of the line soundbar and neither did I expect it to be hence it has exceeded my expectations because of the great sound quality with enough loudness/bass and no distortion.
I got the Bose Soundbar 600 with the hope of replacing my living room soundbar and subwoofer (a JBL Cinema SB400), although going in I knew it wasn't going to be a fair, "apples to apples" test given that the JBL system has a subwoofer and the Bose does not, but then again, the suggested retail prices were very close ($499 for the Bose, $549 for the JBL). So, I am going to highlight the many features that the Bose has that the JBL does not, compare/contrast the sound, and then wrap up with my recommendation. Initial unboxing and setup: The Bose Soundbar 600 comes with everything necessary to connect it to your TV or whatever source you plan on using. Initial unboxing and setup: The Bose Soundbar 600 comes with everything necessary to connect it to your TV or whatever source you plan on using. Included in the box are an HDMI cable, an optical cable, a remote control, and of course the power cable. I first downloaded the Bose Music and upon launching that, it had me create an account, plug in the soundbar, and connect to my Wi-Fi network. Once that was done, it asked if I had accounts with Sirius XM, Spotify, and other music services, having me sign in to the ones I had so that there was a connection to them within the app for quick and easy streaming from those apps to the soundbar. I then connected to the TV using the ARC HDMI connection, while my JBL SB400 remained connected via optical so I could A/B them while watching/listening to various content. First impressions: The Bose Soundbar 600 packs a lot of technology in a little (2.2" high x 27.3" wide x 4.1" deep, and only 6.9 pounds) package. There are 5 speakers, 2 firing left and right, 2 firing straight up, and one firing outwards. There's a microphone that makes it Alexa/Google Assistant enabled. For such a small soundbar, the sound quality is phenomenal, even at the loudest volume. When watching TV shows/movies, I find the Dialogue Mode within the app to be a huge help; it maximizes and clarifies voices while de-emphasizing sound effects and other noise. The app is also very useful for fine tuning bass, treble, height channel, and center channel settings. The other big positive for me is the ability to change the volume with a sliding bar control, which makes it significantly faster turning the volume up and down vs. pressing the volume up/down on the remote multiple times. You can also set the volume precisely by saying "Alexa, set volume to 45" for instance, to set the volume at 45% of maximum. Speaking of the Alexa Voice Assistant, this really shines with soundbar's speakers. Alexa's voice sounds more pleasant through the Bose soundbar than my Echo Dot and Facebook Portal devices, and of course the music quality is many times better with the Bose. I ended up deactivating the Alexa feature of my portal, and relocating the Echo Dot that was in the dining room one room over from the living room, to one of the guest bedrooms. A/B Testing against soundbar with subwoofer: As I stated at the beginning of my review, I didn't expect big bass out of the Bose Soundbar 600, and when it comes to the bass heavy scenes in movies or bass heavy music, when you switch back and forth between the Bose and the JBL, the difference is stark. You can physically FEEL the bass from the JBL subwoofer, even at modest volume; while the lows are essentially missing entirely from the Bose Soundbar 600. Now, you can purchase the Bose Bass Module 500 and the soundbar will discover and work with that, and I feel confident it will match or even exceed the sound quality from my JBL subwoofer; but I'll have to save up for that. Overall, whether TV or music, the sound quality from the Bose Soundbar 600 is crisper, brighter, and simply more pleasing than the larger and heavier JBL soundbar. Conclusion: The Bose Soundbar 600 is an amazing piece of technology. While out of the box, the lows are underwhelming, Bose does sell a solution to that in the Bass Module series of products. The soundbar itself, the app, the connectivity features, and more all contribute to my enthusiastic endorsement, with a recommendation of adding a Bass Module to complete the system.

Watching films with Dolby Atmos really brings what's happening on the screen into your living room. The TrueSpace technology makes for a truly captivating experience, the sound feels incredibly immersive - when watching films or listening to music, it just feels 'next level'. It's bassy and punchy - I feel as if I'm at a live performance everytime I listen to music. It adds a unique dimensional level to all audio, not only music - it simply must be heard in my opinion!- Smart and sleek; the design of the Bose Smart Soundbar 600 is smart and leek, it will easily fit under most TVs without looking bulky and looks really smart with its black body and metal wrap-around grille. - Not just for your TV; the soundbar can be linked with music streaming services such as Spotify. You can easily connect your phone to the soundbar using Bluetooth or Apple AirPlay. I like the fact that you are also able to utilise existing smart home devices on the soundbar such as Amazon Alexa. In short, everything about this soundbar is well thought out and truly lives up to the high-quality performance you would expect from Bose - it will truly bring your viewing, listening and gaming experience to the next level, unlocking the true potential of each and every piece of content. Cons: I do not feel there are any improvement points for this product.
Audio technology continues to get better and better, and the Bose Smart Soundbar 600 capitalizes on the latest features. It was astonishing to experience the quality of the audio produced by this relatively small soundbar. The 600 has side, upward, and forward facing speakers. They somehow combine to bounce sound in a way that makes it appear to surround you, rather than simply coming directly from the soundbar speakers. The audio directed upward ricochets and gives a sense of height as needed. Bose talks about the speakers Dolby Atmos, and True Space technologies, and the soundbar's "up mixing" ability for audio sources without Dolby Atmos. I can only say it works beautifully. A great soundbar truly enhances music and audio of all types, but the 600 goes step ... Bose talks about the speakers Dolby Atmos, and True Space technologies, and the soundbar's "up mixing" ability for audio sources without Dolby Atmos. I can only say it works beautifully. A great soundbar truly enhances music and audio of all types, but the 600 goes step further with a feature where clarity of voice is enhanced by a simple mouse click. This voice clarifier feature, along with others all reside in the Bose Music app. That is where volume may be controlled using your finger to slide the volume slider anywhere from barely audible to rocking the room. Base and treble, Center Channel and Height Channel may be adjusted. The soundbar also excepts voice commands via Amazon Alexa (built in mic), and via the Google Assistant app. The Bose Music app also permits groups to be created so that other Bose speakers may be merged to enhance base, or just to be able to disperse and control the other speakers. I own a Bose Soundlink Revolve II portable speaker -- that fit right in and connected via bluetooth. The 600 app connects using your Wi Fi, and is straightforward. Though the 600 comes with a remote which has buttons to connect w bluetooth, your TV, control volume, mute -- the Bose Music app on your smart phone or tablet (I used my iPad) -- is the way to go. Note: When I initially tried to set up the 600 with the oldest TV I own, it would not work. I called Bose Tech Support and discovered that neither of my 2 HDMI slots was HDMI ARC or eARC. All newer sets seem to have HDMI ARC, but it is something that you need to be aware of. I then went to my new 65" TV and voila. Tech support explained that even without an ARC HDMI input, if the set an Optical Input slot, the 600 came with an Optical cable and that could be used in lieu of HDMI ARC. BTW: Tech support was superb. I phoned and was told that I was 14 in the queue, and that I could leave my number and would be called when my name reached the top of the queue. It took 15 minutes and Bose Tech support was assisting me with the HDMI vs HDMI ARC problem. Quality sound, state of the art features, excellent software and superb service -- I enthusiastically recommend the Bose Smart Soundbar 600.
The Bose Smart Soundbar 600 (I’m going to call it the SS 600) came in packaging more befitting a piece of audio equipment rather than extravagant packaging fit for a piece of expensive jewelry - a welcome change from what has become a virtual arms race for one company to outdo the other. Besides the soundbar and remote (with battery), the package contained a power cord, HDMI cable (Bose-branded rather that the typical cheap-looking generic one usually included by other manufacturers), an optical cable, and a very brief quick-start guide. The full manual can be found on the Bose web site and is worth seeking out before setting up the soundbar in my opinion. The “Support” tab in the Bose Music app is less than helpful as the “Common Questions” tab under Support takes you to a “Page Not Found” dead end. Very un-Bose-like. Set up of the soundbar using the HDMI cable via the ARC port on the TV was relatively simple and painless, although I have had two instances of having to disconnect the HDMI cable and re-connect it to re-establish the connection when the soundbar would do absolutely nothing and the TV resorted to using internal speakers - closing the app and power cycling the devices did nothing to solve the issue. This could be as much the TV’s fault as the soundbar’s fault, however. The SS 600 will turn the TV on and off via the remote control or the Bose Music app on your smartphone when using the ARC HDMI connection (this feature will not work with the optical cable). The soundbar itself has only two controls on it, a microphone mute (for voice commands), and an “action button” to control Amazon Alexa. There is no power button and there is no front panel light to tell you if the unit is powered on or not. There is a multitude of information the bar will tell you via the front panel light, but I suspect few people will see all of them and will have to refer to the manual to see what they mean. The SS600 has five speakers, two that fire upwards, two that face out each end of the soundbar, and one center-firing speaker in the front that handles the dialog. The full manual has some very specific recommendations for placement of the soundbar, so again, it might be worth the trouble to read it. Speaking of voice commands, the firmware update was supposed to happen after I received the product and I kept waiting to receive some confirmation of it happening, but I could never get the set up of Alexa to complete. It would go a few steps and stop at a white screen on my phone, so I don’t know if the update has yet to happen or if I was doing something wrong either in the Bose app or my settings in Amazon. The SimpleSync feature worked very well with my Bose SoundLink Mini and allows you to control independently the volume of all the devices connected in this fashion via the phone app. The sound quality of the SS 600 is typical of Bose products, which in my opinion is excellent (besides the SoundLink, I also have SoundSport earbuds, QuietComfort headphones, and a car with a Bose engineered system in it), but everyone hears a little different and different sound signatures appeal to different people. That said, since the SS 600 does not have a sub-woofer as standard, it does sound a little thin on the low frequency end, but Bose takes care of that with an add-on, wireless sub-woofer along with wireless rear-channel satellite speakers that can be purchased separately. If you plan on wall mounting your soundbar, there is a bracket for that, but it needs to be purchased separately. There are a minimal number of connections on the back panel. The power cord jack and the HDMI port are angled to force the cables to leave the soundbar in a central orientation to help with a clean install, especially if the wires need to go into one wire raceway located at the center of an installation. These canted ports are a pain when trying to plug in the HDMI cable as opposed to a port that is not angled. I’ve had to plug in the HDMI cable a few times now and it doesn’t get any easier. I have a small issue with lip sync when using a certain streaming app which I cannot adjust out using both the soundbar’s setting and the setting on the TV, but I suspect it is an issue with the app as the couple other streaming services I have watched have no sync issue. I am also not sure if I am hearing the full surround sound experience that the SS 600 is supposed to provide since the room I have it in has a 12-foot ceiling and the walls to the sides of the soundbar are quite a distance from it. Since two drivers fire upwards and two more fire out the ends of the bar, in my room there are no close surfaces for the sound to reflect off of. While the Smart Soundbar 600 provides an audio experience better than most flat panel televisions can provide, a true videophile looking for a movie theater-type experience will likely want to purchase the optional sub-woofer and probably the rear channel satellite speakers, which will turn this into a $1400 purchase at full MSRP. The SS 600 does an admirable job on its own for day-to-day television viewing and you get the bonus of using it as a speaker system to listen to music, so it serves multiple functions in a compact and stylish package.
The Smart Soundbar 600 from Bose is a mid-range sound bar supporting Dolby Atmos - a sound format that provides immersive sound adding height to the standard left/right/center sound separation. This can be accomplished by using virtualization, simulating 3D sound using software, or by physically directing sound up and out using dedicated drivers. While the former can be effective, it's rarely as effective as the latter. Thankfully, Bose chose the latter - dedicated physical drivers that directs sound up, as well as side-firing drivers that direct the sound out, and a dedicated center driver for dialogue. MoreThe Smart Soundbar 600 from Bose is a mid-range sound bar supporting Dolby Atmos - a sound format that provides immersive sound adding height to the standard left/right/center sound separation. This helps create a wide soundstage with overhead sounds which is pretty amazing considering it's a single enclosure that is almost unnoticeable sitting under your television. With its matte-black enclosure and low-profile design, the Smart Soundbar 600 is about as close to invisible as it gets. The soundbar is only 2.2" tall, 4.1" deep, and just over 27" long giving the speaker a low profile allowing it to fit effortlessly under almost any TV without obstructing it. Given its compact size, sound quality is excellent, both for its clarity and its impressive sound field. The sound stage is much wider than the bar itself, and the clarity of dialouge is excellent, even at it's default settings. While the Smart Soundbar 600 can’t deliver the kind of bone-shaking bass that a dedicated subwoofer can provide, it’s got more than enough punch to TV/movie sound to life, especially in a smaller room such as a bedroom. Not that it needs to be limited to small spaces as the soundbar can get pretty loud without distortion. For being a standalone soundbar — one without a subwoofer or satellite speakers — the Smart Soundbar 600 sounds very good. While impressive given it's compact design, in order to achieve its full potential as a true surround sound setup, an optional bass module and surround speakers are available to complete the setup, though I found the price of the components a bit on the expensive side. Regardless, the soundbar by itself is a huge improvement over the sound that is available from the TV itself. The Bose Smart Soundbar 600 is equipped with Bluetooth and Apple AirPlay 2. It has Chromecast built-in, and you can use it as an Amazon Alexa smart speaker thanks to the built-in mics. Streaming music is a simple endeavor, but while the default settings are great for TV/Movie content, the same can't be said for streaming music as the results were rather dissappointing. Sound was muddled and lacked any of the clarity that stood out while listening to TV/Movie content. There’s nothing available in the way of sound enhancement, with no pre-set EQ settings or even a bass/treble adjustment. Installing the Bose Music app allowed for bass/treble adjustment, which while still lacking allowed me to adjust music frequencies, but enhanced the sound quality considerably, allowing it to become useful as a bluetooth speaker. Overall the Bose Smart Soundbar 600 offers superb audo quality, particularly for TV/movie content, with clear and precise dialogue, a wide sound stage, and object based audio which brings TV shows and movies to life. While it's a little lacking in bass, it is still impressive given its size. Music reproduction is decent once you install the app. One downside of this soundbar that cannot be overcome is the single HDMI ARC/eARC connection, as you can’t connect an external video source like a streaming media device and passthrough video to your TV while the soundbar handles the audio. This will limit some setups, so keep that in mind. Another area which it fell short for me as the LED indicator on the device, which is hard to deciper and doesn't even show any volume information. Despite the few shortcomings, the Bose Smart Soundbar 600 is an excellent soundbar worthy of consideration, especially if you have limited space for a soundbar.
