I purchased this to replace our previous Breville 4 slice smart toaster which we loved and cooked perfectly every time. My main reason for choosing this model was to fit sourdough and longer slices in and being same range, design and functions as previous toaster I thought it would basically be the same except for slot size. I was very wrong. This toaster does not cook evenly, no matter what setting. Cooking results are inconsistent each time. One time it will burn on lowest setting, next time it won't cook. Same with any setting you choose so we cannot find a setting that we are happy with. The edges of the bread always burn way before the middle even starts to cook. I'm really disappointed with this model of Breville's smart toaster range and would not recommend it at all.

Like a lot of other reviews, the toaster worked great for the first 6-8 months. Its slick functions are very impressive, then it all goes down hill. One slot stopped toasting all together, then shortly after the other slot went down to toasting one side only. The toaster is still under warranty. I’ve just taken it back to point of purchase at David Jones, and have been told it needs to be sent off for inspection, possible repair or replacement which can take up to 4 weeks. They do not replace on the spot.In the meantime I have to buy a new toaster anyway as the kids and family need to eat. This is an absolute stitch up by Breville! So now I’m off to Target to buy a $40 toaster which lasted 10 years prior to this one. If you’re in the market for a toaster, give ... The negative reviews nearly stopped me from purchasing, and I’m so glad I ignored them. I’m not sure what some of these people were expecting from a toaster, but I’m more than happy with mine. I’ve seen a lot of complaints about the beep alerting you that your toast is done being too loud. It really isn’t, and I appreciate it - it keeps me from forgetting my toast and then having to reheat it so the butter will melt. Even if it WERE loud, the instructions (which many people clearly didn’t read) explicitly detail how to adjust the volume. The instructions also tell you to run a toasting cycle at the highest setting to burn off any residue, dust, etc. Which solves the smell some have complained about. The instructions also tell you to run a toasting cycle at the highest setting to burn off any residue, dust, etc. Which solves the smell some have complained about. It toasts very evenly, I can fit long artisan slices of bread in it, or toast 4 frozen waffles for my kids at once. The sliding browning control selector easily allows you to precisely adjust how dark or light you want your toast, so I don’t at all understand the complaints like “2 is too light, and 3 burns it.” So…put it somewhere between the two? This is an excellent toaster, and I’m so glad I ignored the lower reviews!
I got this toaster to fit long pieces of bread. I’ve used the lift & look, as well as the Bit More feature: both are nice. I like the mechanical slow lowering and lifting of the bread. However, I realize now that I formerly (with old toaster) would pop my bread up to grab it mid-flight. I can’t do that now so I have to reach into the slot to grab the hot bread. I’ve burned myself on the metal parts while doing so. It’s like playing Operation. So my suggestion to the design and engineering folks at Breville is to enhance the Lift & Look feature: when it’s already up, pressing again will lift it up even more momentarily so you can grab the slice easier. I may have to buy little tongs to assist. Also I have skinny fingers so if you have stubby pinchers, forget about ... MoreI got this toaster to fit long pieces of bread. Burn detection and local element shutoff. When burnt toast is detected, shut off the elements that are burning it. 2. Single use detection. If you’re only using a single slot for one piece of toast, don’t heat up the elements that aren’t doing anything.
Purchased toaster end of December 2022. Toast came out burnt on the lightest setting. Called beginning of January and was told we could get a replacement. New toaster arrived yesterday. Instruction book suggested a setting of '3.5' for the first slice......toast was burnt. Reduced the setting to '2' for the second slice.......not burnt but too dark for our liking. Further reduced the setting to '1'....came out what I would call 'medium'. Too bad this machine can not produce a lightly toasted piece of bread. In addition, we noticed that one side of the slice was perfectly even, while the bottom corners of the other side were darker. We will not be buying any Breville product again.
I love the fact I can fit my homemade bread in it without having to cut the slices in half. I love the lift and look feature so that I can check on progress. I love the bar that lights up to show how long is left so I can time my eggs to be done at the same time. I love the ability to toast a little bit more rather than having to start from the beginning. I love the controlled lift at the end so that my toast isn’t flung across the counter or even onto the floor. We had one before but eventually, like all toasters, the heating elements failed. We decided to economize and bought a cheap well-known brand and hated it so much we had to give in and go back to the Breville.
After nothing but trouble with many other toasters, I bought one of the Breville toasters (like this only white plastic) although it was not cheap. Really happy with it, used it for several years but THEN we purchased stainless steel appliances and was tempted by the look, knowing that it would work well ... so I passed the white one along to a relative and got this one. We've had it for 4 years now and are very pleased with it. It fits our favorite artisan bread, which was always a problem with standard toasters. It's great to toast 2 English muffins/bagels or smaller bread slices, I love the bagel setting which I start with.... and finish up with standard setting - perfection! In the past, I've had toasters which set off the fire alarm! ! - Never again with the Breville. I am very pleased with our Breville toaster and wouldn't give it up for anything. I have been so pleased with my Breville toasters I have purchased other Breville small electrics. They work well!
My original purchases was made in Sep. 2019 and the unit lasted into the summer of 2021 before the inner heating elements stopped working correctly. As with others, the bread would only toast on one side. As with others, the inner heating elements worked fine in bagel mode. To Breville's credit, they did provide me a replacement in July of 2021. In the Oct/Nov 2022 timeframe, the same issue started to return and now in Dec 2022 the issue is here for good. The unit only toasts via the outer heating elements unless it is set to bagel mode. Clearly with this issue being persistent for many users there is a design flaw that should exist in a $200 appliance. I am very disappointed with what is otherwise a fantastic toaster.
Overall this has been disappointing because of the short lifespan. But let's start with the pros:- great exterior look and feel. Weighty, solid, clean- love the button labels "lift and look" "a bit more" etc.. such good design.- did a consistent job toasting (except for the lowest part of the toast which it always misses - adjust bottom of travel up or elements down 0.5 inches to fix future designs)cons:- it breaks. The centre elements have stopped working. First side went just after 3 yr mark and other centre side 4 months later. (tested with "Bagel" feature: which produced a custom non-toast effect... so I guess that's a kind of pro, though reading the rest of the reviews here, it is in no way exclusive)- it's hard to fix or just as expensive as buying ... Had it kept on working it would still have been a high price, but worth the investment.
