Breville Bes840bsxl 'The Infuser' Espresso Machine Black
Balanced flavors are drawn evenly from all the grinds. So what is the best way to prepare the grinds for an even extraction? Rather than starting with bursts of high pressure, a steady low pressure pre-infusion gently expands the grinds before stepping up to high pressure for an even extraction. Electronic PID temperature control delivers increased temperature stability for a better tasting cup and high power 1600W for high pressure steam and faster heat up.

The Breville site is easy to use. Ordering was without problems. The Infuser arrived in good order and fairly quickly. Set up was easy as was the programming of the shot buttons. Not real keen on the new design for the coffee ground cups in the doser. Much prefer the straight sides cup over the taper of the single shot cup. The cups are so tight in the doser it is almost impossible to remove without a screw driver to pry it out. The water reservoir is in an inconvenient location when the machine is situated under a cupboard. Getting used to it though. A couple of other strange design choices but minor.

Very sophisticated home espresso machine. This is the second one that I have purchased, the first one new and the second used. The first one's pump gave out after 4 years, but I liked it so much that I purchased another one used, with assurances that it worked fine. Well, it eventually did work as well as my old one, but I had to grind the beans finer and tap more forcefully before it had enough pressure to produce a good tasting espresso with crema. The bought the used one for about 40% of the price of a new machine because I just did not want to spend the high price, Be sure to keep the manual as the two processes for cleaning the machine are a bit complicated.

My Breville Double Boiler quit after eight years at least. This is the longest lasting by far of my now 5 machines. I was tempted to get another but counter space was an issue and the Infuser fits well and allows room for other paraphernalia. I like that it heats faster and makes an almost identical cup of espresso. I think the default heat may be set a tad higher than the 195 i chose on the DB. On the other hand the portafilter which fits tight and never leaks lines up with one spout 30 degrees to the rear which is odd. I don't make 2 cups at a time and I still could, just odd. Also the basket is smaller but deeper so as to actually create a longer pull than I ever got with the double boiler. The automatic "pull" time seems ideal to me. Bottom line it seems very ... MoreMy Breville Double Boiler quit after eight years at least. This is the longest lasting by far of my now 5 machines. Bottom line it seems very dependable, consistent, makes good coffee and is easy to clean. The steamer works very well if you follow the instructions keeping the wand near the surface of the milk and creates great foam/froth. There have been no leaks. The overflow tray and water reservoir have to be attended to more ofter due to size but the design of both are improved over my old one which I loved. And the magnetically held tamper is always handy in it's spot.

While there are things I like about the machine, the reason why it only gets 3 stars is because this is *NOT* a 9 bar machine despite what it says on the box and how it's advertised. The machine runs at 14-15 bar which means that in order to get a reasonable extraction - one must grind coarsely and run a lot of water through the coffee. In order to achieve an actual 9 bar extraction - I had to open up and tinker with the machine, likely voiding the warranty immediately whilst also increasing the chance of a leak.It is unfortunate given how easy it is to make this an actual 9 bar machine (or even make it adjustable given how good Breville is with designing all other aspects of the machine)I think this machine is good if you're either ok with out of the box ... MoreWhile there are things I like about the machine, the reason why it only gets 3 stars is because this is *NOT* a 9 bar machine despite what it says on the box and how it's advertised. The machine runs at 14-15 bar which means that in order to get a reasonable extraction - one must grind coarsely and run a lot of water through the coffee. In order to achieve an actual 9 bar extraction - I had to open up and tinker with the machine, likely voiding the warranty immediately whilst also increasing the chance of a leak.It is unfortunate given how easy it is to make this an actual 9 bar machine (or even make it adjustable given how good Breville is with designing all other aspects of the machine)I think this machine is good if you're either ok with out of the box experience of pressing the button and getting the basic pre-programmed amounts or buying this with an expectation of going all out and modding the machine yourself (at which point you may consider Gaggia which may have a superior build quality and is a simpler machine, making modding easier)As for the good, the machine is relatively feature rich at this price point, easy to interact with and has thoughtful minute design decisions (like drip tray float, easily accessible and removable water tank and so on).It also heats up very quickly and has a hot water dispenser.
First, I love coffee and have been learning from a barista, which is what led me to want a home unit to augment my French press. I know enough to make delicious espresso-based drinks, but am by no means an expert.Initially, I failed to produce an espresso shot with the preloaded single wall basket; it ran through with no pressure registering on the dial. After reading the manual, I decided to try the double-wall basket (despite using fresh finely ground coffee) and it hit the "sweet spot" on the first pull, which has been consistently replicated. There's an excellent amount of crema in every shot. The steamer steams and foams the milk nicely (if you want more foam, adjust the wand until you hear a "paper tearing" sound near the surface of the milk), so lattes and ... MoreFirst, I love coffee and have been learning from a barista, which is what led me to want a home unit to augment my French press. There's an excellent amount of crema in every shot. The steamer steams and foams the milk nicely (if you want more foam, adjust the wand until you hear a "paper tearing" sound near the surface of the milk), so lattes and cappuccinos should be no problem. Listen to the guide on only filling the pitcher until the "V" begins, as steaming and foaming will fill the pitcher when starting at that level (using whole milk). I only wish they included a thermometer that clips onto the pitcher to track milk temperature so you don't "ruin" good shots with lukewarm milk. I would personally recommend heating the milk first to a level where it could cool a few degrees while the shot extracts, as you don't want the shot "aging" while you're heating the milk.Optionally, get a bar spoon to hold back the foam to get the desired "milk-to-foam" ratio. I'll probably consider a knockbox, also, so I can easily remove the "ground puck" from the portafilter.I use this in morning and evening, so not sure how it would perform with a run of consecutive drinks. Most likely, my French press is going into early retirement, though.
I bought this refurbished model several years ago. Eventually, the steam wand and hot water dispenser stopped working and all steam and water only came out of the espresso basket. I figured I would try getting a new one since I liked the way it worked when it was working. After a few months, the exact same thing happened to this new unit. I sent it back and a new replacement was returned to me (Good). After a few months, the exact same problem happened with the replacement unit (Bad). It was disappointing to learn that my warranty was not being honored because it only applied for 1 year from the date of the new unit that I initially purchased (Bad). The one year warranty did not cover the brand new replacement unit I had received (Bad). So, my option was to send in the most recent unit and pay $250+ for the service or take a 25% discount on a new unit (Bad).I love this machine when it works but why would I buy a third one when I haven’t had one last a year?Anyway, when they work, they are awesome. Unfortunately, I have not had one last more than a year.ADD: Yes, I took very good care of my units, cleaned them, descaled them regularly, used high-quality, filtered water, etc.
This is my first espresso machine that I bought in 2018 and it still works perfectly! As a first time espresso machine user, I wanted a machine that lets me brew espresso manually and semi automatically while showing me the bar pressure to make sure I am dialed in correctly. But I also didn't want to spend over a grand on a machine that has features I don't need. The Infuser does just that. You see your bar pressure, you can rely on the factory programmed volume for shots. You can re-program the volume for single and double shots, and you can even brew manually by holding the button, and pressing the button again to stop. Manual extraction allows you to experiment with ratio and weight based extractions. The portafilter has a plastic piece inside of it, This ... MoreThis is my first espresso machine that I bought in 2018 and it still works perfectly! As a first time espresso machine user, I wanted a machine that lets me brew espresso manually and semi automatically while showing me the bar pressure to make sure I am dialed in correctly. Manual extraction allows you to experiment with ratio and weight based extractions. The portafilter has a plastic piece inside of it, This means you DON'T have to wait for your portafilter to get hot before brewing. The magnetic tamper is really convenient, as is the compartment to store the utilities and accessories for the infuser. Note that the extra filter baskets won't fit in there, so those have to go elsewhere. The hot water spout means I can make a Long black/Americano in less time than it takes to boil a kettle of water. If you are new to espresso machines, just bear in mind every model requires more maintenance than other coffee makers. Replacing water filters every 2 months, descaling every 2 months or so, and using a backflush tablet as needed, which the machine indicates to you when needed. you HAVE to do these things if you want your machine to last.In the 3 years I have owned this machine so far, I only had it serviced once for a solenoid valve replacement under warranty. I hope to have many more years with it.Are there any features I wish it had?I wish Breville had a cool touch steam wand so that milk would wipe away easier.
The Infuser has enabled me to pull a very good espresso. The pressure gauge tells me I have the right amount of coffee ground properly, tamped, and leveled correctly. I prefer a separate bean grinder as a grinder needs cleaning frequently. The steaming wand works great and after a few you tube videos, I can honestly say I get great microfoam. The hot water spigot is very nice and I use every time to warm up the portafilter and my cups. I use this machine everyday and really looked forward to my latte! At this price point, this is a wonderful espresso machine. I suggest the Infuser and a separate, high quality grinder. If the grind is wrong, no pull out of any machine is good to drink. If you want to have a hand in making an espresso, this is a wonderful machine to use. I had previously purchased a Bambino Plus which was defective and returned to Breville upgrading to Infuser. Breville customer service was wonderful to work with and I highly recommend purchasing directly from Breville.
Very disappointed in this machine. It pulled shots ok and all that but the steam wand has been an issue since I purchased it. The process to steam milk is cumbersome to say the least. The turning it on to prime and waiting for what feels like a lifetime when you’re standing there in the morning, then having to turn it off and get your milk under there in like 6 seconds and turning it back on before it purges. Not something I want to be having to time out to the second in that scenario. Then after that it would take forever to steam enough milk just for a regular latte. By the time it was hot enough, it had about doubled in volume from the amount of water from the “steam”. By the time it was hot enough, it had about doubled in volume from the amount of water from the “steam”. I was dealing with all that because I usually just steam a little heavy cream for my espresso anyway and had given up on offering lattes to guests. Well then, after a little over a year, the wand just stopped producing steam at all. It would try and I heard the pumping but it was just a stream of water that never turned to steam and when I would turn it back to standby, the water would continue coming out of the wand. Maybe it was busted to begin with because I cleaned it when the light told me to but it never told me to descale so when I tried that as a fix, maybe it was already too late. Who knows. Just very disappointed because I had high hopes when I purchased it and had wanted an espresso machine for so long.
Learning to brew properly is hard given all the variables:- dose- basket- grind size- tamp pressure- temperature- bloom time- extraction time- extraction pressure- yieldThe Infuser makes all the extraction-related variables constant for me, making it much easier to learn to dial-in for a perfect cup. I just focus on the beans, dose, grind size, and tamp.I went with the Infuser because I like to manually grind my beans per-dose, and this also enables me to upgrade my grinder and brewer separately.
