Beta alanine is a powdered product that lends itself well to synthesising L-carnosine, which itself is a type of amino acid that provides a host of benefits to anyone involved in much physical activity such as athletes or bodybuilders. Studies show that the level of carnosine is raised significantly and the levels of lactic acid are in turn lowered significantly during physical activity thanks to the presence of beta alanine in the blood stream. Its main use is as a buffer, which prevents acid levels in the body from rising to a level in which they may damage muscle tissue. This means that beta alanine can raise the level of overall physical performance when taken as a supplement, by increasing the threshold of lactate. Beta alanine is the only beta amino acid in the body which it is not necessary to supplement through dietary intake because it is naturally occurring. Beta alanine is chiefly useful in increasing the longevity of endurance when doing any sort of physical activity, allowing the person taking it to exercise much longer and thus, increase their muscle mass or burn their fat much more efficiently. In addition it indirectly helps to widen the blood vessels via carnosine, which increases blood flow during long bouts of physical activity.

I ordered a bag of beta alanine and upon opening it smelled strongly of ammonia. I know it’s not supposed to smell like that, so I contacted Bulk supplements. Due to the fact their contact information is essentially nonexistent I have not heard anything back from them and I am extremely disappointed and would not recommend them to anyone else.

Following a workout, I have noticed a reduction in muscle soreness as well. From what I have read, including it in a pre-workout is not necessary as it isn't a time dependent supplement, and instead spreading the dosage out over a day reduces the likelihood of paresthesia. The effect, which apparently is harmless, is slightly irritating to me, and normally appears when dosing around 2.5-3g in my pre-workout. The effect normally only persists for 15-20 minutes after it starts, typically 15-30 minutes after consuming my pre-workout.The product itself, like almost all bulk supplements products, comes in a light blocking resealable bag and has the consistency of granulated sugar. The taste is fairly neutral, and mixes well with water. I have not noticed any left over residue or clumping after thorough shaking. Overall, I think the improvements with this supplement are noticable enough to continue use in the future, and recommend it for those of you looking to increase your gains. I ultimately decided upon 4 stars due to no measuring scoop being provided and the product arriving clumpy that had to be broken up.

Other products by this brand have been quality-tested by third party organizations like LabDoor, and all have exceeded their promises. One thing worth doing is explaining how to work with their products, so here's a short guide-The bags use press-to-seal ziploc, which is not ideal for multiple accesses. I recommend transferring portions of the powder to a mason jar or similar container, using the bag for long-term storage.-There is no scoop provided, because they don't do dosing. What IS provided is a measurement to concentration table. The label gives you measurements in increments of teaspoons (1tsp = 5ml). It's easy to miss and very handy. How (and why) to take beta-alanine:Take 3.2grams per day, taken as either four doses of 800mg or three doses of 1.1g (1100mg), spaced out by at least three hours. The time of day does not matter, and it is irrelevant to take it pre-, post-, or mid-workout. At any given time, it only matters if you have taken it consistently for a week or two. Take it in 800mg doses for one week before trying 1.1g doses to get your body used to it. It's been found that almost all people tolerate 800mg, but most will handle a slightly higher dose without the prickling feeling. I personally take 1.1g without noticeable effects. It takes one to two weeks to reach peak efficacy, and you will lose the performance benefits two to three weeks after you stop taking it. More information and the reasons for this dosing can be found below.I do a meta-analysis of every supplement I consider taking. The information below is up to date via peer-reviewed, vetted studies sourced July 1st 2018.The realistic, studied doses are 3-3.5 grams per day and ~6 grams per day. There has been no difference in results between the two, so my dosing recommendations will be targeted at and just above 3 grams per day. There is no reason to believe lower doses are ineffective, but they have not been studied. Both doses have been found to increase muscle concentration of carnosine and to improve performance in mid-high intensity, mid-high duration activities. Think long sprints, HIIT, swimming, and drop sets. Effect has been observed in general (think resistance training) activities, but it's too early for certainty.Muscle carnosine levels have been found to be highly diet related, so supplementing is very unlikely to cause long-term change. Specifically, vegetarians (which implies vegans also - the significant aspect is the lack of meat in their diet) have chronically lower carnosine levels. It has not been studied, but it is simple to predict beta-alanine supplementation may be even more valuable to non-meat eating groups. Carnosine levels following the end of beta-supplementation have steadily reverted to baseline values across multiple studies. It's only effective while you take it.At 800mg per dose, beta-alanine has consistently shown no prickling or flushing side effects. This number was chosen arbitrarily by researchers, and the only hard data about what doses WILL consistently cause side effects is anything 3g or more in a small time frame. Many will tolerate a larger (than 800mg) dose, but how much larger remains to be seen.If you have any questions, you may reply to my comment and I will do my best to answer and make clear the limitations of my knowledge. The disturbing presence of naturalists, broscientists, and other homeopathic charlatans is something I'm willing to spend my time working against.

Great product for adding a few extra reps, wont workout without it anymore if I can help it. Make sure and take some taurine. It can cause an imbalance in the central nervous system, dont know what the ratio would be, im doing further for myself. From what I've read taurine and beta alinine use the same pathways and cancel each other out if taken at the same time. I never really felt a difference like I read but I take just take them at different times now just to be safe. 1000mg of taurine is a great addition anyway after a good workout. Found this article on a body building forum 'Hill CA, ****** RC, Kim HJ, ****** BD, Sale C, Boobis LH, Kim CK, Wise JA.School of Sports, Exercise & Health Sciences, University of Chichester, Chichester, U.K..Muscle carnosine synthesis is limited by the availability of beta-alanine. Thirteen male subjects were supplemented with beta-alanine (CarnoSyntrade mark) for 4 wks, 8 of these for 10 wks. A biopsy of the vastus lateralis was obtained from 6 of the 8 at 0, 4 and 10 wks. Subjects undertook a cycle capacity test to determine total work done (TWD) at 110% (CCT(110%)) of their maximum power (W(max)). Twelve matched subjects received a placebo. Eleven of these completed the CCT(110%) at 0 and 4 wks, and 8, 10 wks. Muscle biopsies were obtained from 5 of the 8 and one additional subject. Muscle carnosine was significantly increased by +58.8% and +80.1% after 4 and 10 wks beta-alanine supplementation. Carnosine, initially 1.71 times higher in type IIa fibres, increased equally in both type I and IIa fibres. No increase was seen in control subjects. Taurine was unchanged by 10 wks of supplementation. 4 wks beta-alanine supplementation resulted in a significant increase in TWD (+13.0%); with a further +3.2% increase at 10 wks. TWD was unchanged at 4 and 10 wks in the control subjects. The increase in TWD with supplementation followed the increase in muscle carnosine.Basically this says no effects of taurine levels, but it has been documented in cyclists that it does effect a certain cell within the liver, i think im going to take it at night a few hours after my last beta-alanine for the day so it doesnt effect my GAMA receptors which is the transporter system apparently which beta alanine and taurine fight for.Think its more that it effects people differently. However if its good for heart health then i dont want to deplete myself, also liver health.apparently all these studies into rats and into cats, the beta alanine concentrations due to mass size are imcomparable to human studies'

I found this works great with orange juice
19 May 2016

If you've taken beta alanine (or done your research), you'll know that it is the ingredient in most "hype" pre-workout supplements that gives the skin tingles. Over the years, I stopped taking pre-workout as well as most blend supplements due to the dyes and flavors really disturbing my stomach. Not to mention, if you take more than 2 or three different supplements, you are just downing way too much liquid to warrant taking any kind of expensive fancy labelled flavored supplements.I found this works great with orange juice, creatine (pure powder, caffeine anhydrous (50-200m, pure), and as much beta alanine as gives you a comfortable level of "tingles". Also works with black tea, but can taste a bit bitter unless sweetened otherwise. As far as the actual integrity of the product goes, arrives in a vacuum sealed bag. Provides basic information on the label (nothing else really needed). It's is nice to not see a wall of text on a product with one ingredient. Bulk Supplements Beta Alanine powder does not bother my stomach (which is sensitive to dyes, preservatives and most additives). This is a godsend.Overall: Clean supplement, works well for "homemade pre-workout" or to amp up current pre-workout.Very satisfied: 5/5

I still get the tingly sensation beta alanine is known for but it doesnt bother me much as long as I didnt put too much into my drink. My entire shift goes by like a breeze and I work up so much endurance that I have to stop and make sure Im not overworking but the next day I wasnt even sore from working so hard and so long. This I highly recommend not only for Exercise but also if you work daily on your feet all day and its a physical job.

Really helps add a few more reps in the gym...

Really helps add a few more reps in the gym...We all want one or two more reps at the end of a good set in the gym. Most people who are serious about their workouts swear that these last few sets are where most of the growth take place. So how do you push through the fatigue to get those last few reps? Beta Alanine may be part of the answer.Beta-alanine has been shown to enhance muscular endurance. Many people report being able to perform one or two additional reps in the gym when training in sets of 815 repetitions. Beta-alanine supplementation can also improve moderate- to high-intensity cardiovascular exercise performance, like rowing or sprinting. In my research to find info on pushing through the fatigue I found this info on Men's Fitness "Research suggests that, during high intensity weight training or sprint work, beta alanine can reduce the symptoms of fatigue.May reduce the symptoms of fatigueA 2008 study at The College of New Jersey examined collegiate football players on a 30-day schedule of beta alanine supplementation. The players were randomly divided into a supplement or placebo group three weeks before preseason football training camp. Performance was measured on the first day of camp by a 60-second anaerobic power test and three line drills. Throughout the duration of camp, logs recorded resistance training volumes, and subjects completed questionnaires on feelings of soreness, fatigue and practice intensity. The group that took the beta alanine supplements had a lower fatigue rate and a higher training volume throughout the exercises.May enhance the benefits of creatineAnother study at The College of New Jersey (this one, performed in 2006) looked at the effects of beta alanine when combined with creatine. During a 10-week resistance-training program, 33 college football players took either creatine, creatine plus beta-alanine or a placebo. The group taking the beta alanine saw the most significant gains in lean body mass as well as reduction of body fat percentage.

That fuzzy, electrical feeling...
21 January 2019

I had started taking a few different mineral and amino acids for supplements and came across Beta Alanine. Mostly used in pre-workout powders, but the majority of what I read is that it isn't in sufficient amounts to really help. Many comments were that they used it individually to build their own pre-workout supplement that was more effective to what they were trying to accomplish. Additionally research led me to Bulk Supplements as a highly rated, but one of the most cost effective companies out there. I generally have well rounded workout routines, heavier on the cardio but I also have a good mix of weight training. I needed a small boost for running and cycling, so after having tried L-Cirtulline I decided to add in some of the Beta Alanine. Its really hard to ... MoreI had started taking a few different mineral and amino acids for supplements and came across Beta Alanine. The fact that Bulk Supplements sells it as is with no extra binders or flavorings is a huge value add, plus it's pretty good on the purity level from the testing results I found during a search.I am writing this after taking some as part of my pre-workout, it was good enough that after drinking it my lips slightly felt tingly within 1 minute due to the pre-workout liquid. It's pretty good stuff and will last around 20-30 minutes on what I feel is a good dosage for me.

Those with issues sleeping may want to take caution
7 August 2017

While this is likely more me than it is the supplement, I want to be honest and share for other folks who may be like me.- While I noticed some perhaps ever-so-slight endurance improvement, I didn't notice enough to get past some of the issues- Even if I took it first thing in the morning, even 18 hours later, I would just have this horrible anxious feeling (for lack of a better way to describe) and not be able to sleep. I did finally manage to figure out that a) I had to work out really, really, really hard, b) take it in the morning, c) take such a low dose as to probably not be worth it and d) take other stuff before bed to assist with falling and staying asleep.- I did notice some - again, for a lack of better way to put it - anti-histamine like properties. ... MoreWhile this is likely more me than it is the supplement, I want to be honest and share for other folks who may be like me.- While I noticed some perhaps ever-so-slight endurance improvement, I didn't notice enough to get past some of the issues- Even if I took it first thing in the morning, even 18 hours later, I would just have this horrible anxious feeling (for lack of a better way to describe) and not be able to sleep. This could be a really good thing if I could figure out how to sleep more reliably on the stuff.I doubt this is the normal experience, but nevertheless.I did have the flushing sensation, but no worse than niacin and certainly not something that I couldn't live with. Certainly if that had been the main issue, I would still take it.
