A great boot in its own right

Fit a bit different that non-SO Photons. A little more snug by my pinky toe (where the cleat is), but so far it seems to work. No getting the hotspot people complained about in
previous generations (judging by other reviews/comments, this seems to have been addressed). Also a little more volume above my forefoot than my old photons.Be VERY
careful about fit. Boots are the most important part of your setup (imo), and they're even MORE important with Step Ons. I recommend getting educated on proper fit, if
you're not already. I ended up with a size above what Burton recommended based on mondopoint — but I also have weird feet.

enough toe box room in my boot which put my in a size 11, which then put me in a bigger binding. That combo was terrible on a 153 as far as heel and toe drag. Now that
burton is making wide boots I was able to go down in size and still get enough room in the boot to be comfy which then allowed me to drop to a medium binding. That combo
has zero heel or toe drag. I can also ride all day without my feet going numb or hurting like they always have in other boots. This has been a real game changer. ... Show more

Across multiple boot types I was always tightening, loosening or adjusting throughout a day on the slopes. With these I found myself doing little of that, even when I was taking breaks. These boots plus StepOn bindings have really reinvigorated my riding and excitement.... Show more

Comparing Soft and Regular Photon Step On
30 October 2022
Since there's been so little info online to compare these against the regular Photons, I got both to try them out. Haven't gotten either of them on the snow yet, but here are some initial things I noticed. The *only* difference I found was with the articulated cuff. The soft version has a neoprene joint between the upper and lower sections on the outsides only (not both sides) making the shell softer flexing. I noticed the flex difference mostly front to back and not as much difference laterally. Not convinced that's a great design choice because the flex point lands right at the top of the Snugger Strap. Seems like it would start to hang up / wear funny very quickly as the boots broke in. The heel backstay was identical between the models (Burton's own website ... MoreSince there's been so little info online to compare these against the regular Photons, I got both to try them out. The heel backstay was identical between the models (Burton's own website shows some photos of the Soft with a shorter backstay support).I was a bit worried the regular Photons would be too stiff but in the end the Soft version seemed too soft for my tastes. The regular seems to have quite a bit of range of stiffness available with the boot Boa and Snugger Strap. Leave the Snugger relatively loose and things flex pretty well, crank it down and everything stiffens up nicely. For someone who doesn't ride Park anymore, the regulars seemed perfect for all-mountain charging. Both versions seem very solid with the new Soft model allowing for a noticeably softer flex profile if that's what you're after.Hope that helps anybody else on the fence between these two models.... First time trying Step-Ons
3 February 2022
I have been snowboarding for almost ten years and have never tried Burton Step Ons before. The main concern I had was that the bindings were going to feel loose and be unresponsive. After testing them out, I realized I was completely wrong. The Burton Photon and the Step On bindings were very stiff and super responsive- just the way I like my set up. The step on's felt very secure and rode like normal pair of boots and bindings. I spend a couple runs doing some aggressive turns trying to put the step ons to the test, but they never budged! It was an awesome feeling being able to roll of the chairlift and just step on and go without ever stopping! I 100% recommend the Burton Step Ons. The Photons were my first experience with Burton Quick Pull, and I really liked them. One downside with the Quick Pull system and the Photons specifically is that there’s a lot going on and when the boot is all the way undone, with wires going everywhere. They make it easy to store the laces after the boot is done up or when you’re ready to put them away, so it’s only a problem if you’re tired/lazy and don’t put the boots away properly.... Show more

Perfect fit!
19 December 2023
My first pair of step ons and i have to say, they're pretty comfy. They are very adjustable and the boa system makes putting them on and taking off a breeze. And as with any Burton product, they feel very well made. Compared to my previous pair of boots from thirtytwo, these feel significantly better put together. The only thing is i wish it came in a white colorway since that is what i was going for but gray is close enough. I'm usually a size 8 (sneakers from adidas) so i ordered a size 8 and these fit perfectly snug. I'm sure after wearing them after a few trips and they'll stretch a bit and be just right!... Show more

Photon Step on Boots
28 November 2023
I had worn them about 4 times for probably anywhere from 3 to 5 hours each boarding trip. They are comfortable, but seem to loosen up quite frequently after going down some slopes. I had to make sure I tightened the BOA's after every run to make them snug again. Not sure if all BOA systems are like this as these are my first pair that has them, or if I just got poor QC boots. The pant retainer clip also had snapped off one of my boots somehow. No hard use, no crazy falls or snags on anything while walking around in them. There is some noticeable wearing on the inner toes from setting the board when riding on the ski lifts.Other than that - like I had stated, they are comfortable, true to size and have kept my feet warm while riding.... Save up and take the plunge. It's worth it.
4 February 2024
I had a chance to demo these for a full day of heavy riding at a demo event. The snow was slushy from all the rain. But the boots kept me warm and the bindings made it extremely easy to go from board to board. It'd be easy to have one binding for a full quiver. Once I got over the mind melt of not seeing straps on my toes, it was all gas. The boots and bindings are super responsive and extremely comfortable. I usually have to take a break after having my feet strapped in for a couple hours, but I was able to ride all day without a single issue. Definitely a convert to the step one.... Show more

Solid
26 February 2024
This is my first double boa system I've tried and it works decently enough. The boots are definitely on the stiffer side. I do wish one of the boas tightened more of the toe area. Also it feels like the boas come a bit loose after riding down a couple of times, making me bend over and re-tighten, which is not a huge deal, but a lil annoying after you get the right amount of tightness on that first run and having to re-do it. Overall they're pretty solid boots and am happy with the purchase.... Show more

The best Step On boots of the season

Burton Photon Step On Boots are definitely fantastic boots to pair with Burton Step On bindings. They bind securely and comfortably with a very minimal learning curve. I also personally like the look and aesthetic of these boots especially among the limited options of Step On boots so far.The rope BOA system in these boots are clearly better than other BOA boots I've ever tried on. This system uses one single BOA coiler for tighten both upper and lower zone of the boots and use another coiler for the ankle hold. I honestly find this to be better than dual zone BOA coilers found in many other Step On boots such as DC Control Boa Step On. The ropes on this system seem to be durable and reliable which may make these boots last quite a bit longer than the competition.I have experienced the two top criticism of the Step On system which are the clicking noise and some hot zone in the boots. The clicking noise happens when I went on very bumpy ride shaking the board and my foot apart. Nevertheless, it doesn't always happen and was easy to ignore in my opinion. After a full day riding, I also felt a very mild hot zone on one of my foot where the boot binds with the side anchor. It was very minor and I no longer noticed it after resting on a ride up the chairlift. There was also an odd rust colored mark on snowboard socks on top of my foot after riding my brand new pair boots. But I suspect this will wash off easily. To sum up, this is the best Step On Snowboard Boots for me in this season. I am completely satisfied. #sweepstakes... Show more
