I ordered these after purchasing a pair of the 10x42IS for my wife. The image stabilization make so much more detail visible when used for astronomy (my primary use). Unfortunately, the first pair I received had an issue where the image would 'jitter' during IS mode. B and H promptly replaced them after contacting them with about as little hassle as anyone could possibly ask for. The second pair has been perfect, but the reason for 4 stars instead of 5 (besides the QC issue with the first pair) is that you have to order objective caps since the binos do not come with them. Also, the neck strap that the 10x42's come with is much nicer than the strap supplied with the 15x50's. The case for the 10x42's is also sturdier and more protective than the 15x50's. For such an expensive binocular, and the low relative cost of including/improving the accessories, it's a bit disappointing. Until you hold the binos up to your eyes and press that little button!

Mostly good, but two issues. Chromatic aberration results in very noticeable color fringing under some conditions. The other is what I consider a really dumb design flaw. These have a tripod socket, which is a really good idea, but Canon doesn't seem to have thought about how it will be used. Like a lot of photographers I find QR plates of the Arca Swiss sort really convenient, but as near as I can tell there's no such thing as a plate that won't interfere with the battery door, making it impossible to change the batteries without removing the plate (which makes having a quarter or other suitable tool necessary).I can't see any reason that the door couldn't be on the top or perhaps rotated 90 but on the off chance there is there can't be any reason other than a ... MoreMostly good, but two issues. Besides all the excellent remarks about these fantastic binoculars, I wanted to focus and show you how it looks with two Canon 58mm Protector Filters and with two Canon E-58 II Lens Caps. These filters and caps should have come OEM with these amazing 15x50 binoculars. These filters screw in perfectly, as they are made by Canon and as well as the lens caps.I installed these filters and caps as soon as I opened the original box and took the 15x50s out of its original Canon bag. No dust speckle was left between front element and filter. It is a small investment to protect your large investment, so I highly recommend you to do the same and buy two filters and two lens caps.I also wanted to show you that the Arca-Swiss plate does cover about 5 to 10% of the battery ... MoreBesides all the excellent remarks about these fantastic binoculars, I wanted to focus and show you how it looks with two Canon 58mm Protector Filters and with two Canon E-58 II Lens Caps. These filters and caps should have come OEM with these amazing 15x50 binoculars. I have owned this 15 x 50 IS All-Weather for a number of years. It is fantastic for star-gazing, bird-watching, sightseeing, and a host of other uses. It is on the heavy side but worth it in most situations. I tend not to travel with it, however, if I am pressed for packing space or weight. I have a more compact and much less expensive set of binoculars for that.
My first good binocular was the Leitz Trinovid 8x40B acquired in the 1970's with a tax refund. That has remained my go-to binocular for all-round use - it still looks and operates like new today. In the interim I've wanted a larger binocular primarily for sky-watching. Based on a magazine recommendation, in 1997 I got the Nikon Pro-Star 7x50 (which I also still have). However, I've never been completely satisfied with the Nikon. It is heavy to the extent nearly demanding a tripod for more than a quick view. The 7x magnification is somewhat limiting while at the same time I've never been able to hand-hold it steadily enough for a satisfying look at something. Finally, this year it occurred to me to shop image-stabilized binoculars. Selecting the higher-power and larger-objective lens models suitable for sky-watching, I read all the B&H reviews and it came to down to this one, the Canon IS 15x50.Addressing some of the concerns laid out in other user reviews, I would say first of all that this does NOT seem to me a particularly heavy binocular. Perhaps I'm spoiled by years of lugging around heavy camera bags. In any case, to me this is comfortable around the neck and perfectly OK for holding up for a few minutes viewing at a time.As for the image stabilization, on/off makes a tremendous difference. While I am not capable of hand-holding it to tripod-like steadiness with the IS turned on, the image movement that remains is slow and damped and so doesn't detract from my study of subject details. As for optical performance, it is very difficult to perceive color fringing except possibly near the extreme edge of the field. The sharpness across the field is pin-point. I received this Canon 15x50 a few days following the Jupiter-Saturn conjunction. Even in twilight the four Galilean moons of Jupiter are pinpoints of light, Jupiter is a clear disc, and Saturn's rings are resolved as horns on the smaller Saturn disc. After I saw for myself how great this binocular is, I ordered a pair of the Canon E-58 II 58mm Lens Caps that a reviewer of that product says are a perfect fit. The case that comes with the binocular is basic but serviceable. The eye-cups are flexible and comfortable. The range of the inter-ocular adjustment works fine for me.In summary, I find this Canon IS 15x50 ideal not only for sky-watching but any general use where I'd want to go beyond my 8x40 Trinovid.
A bit heavy, but stabilization seems to work well. For expensive binoculars like this you would expect a better case than the thin tie up bag it cones with. Also front lens covers you would think should be included. It is difficult to find a decent case that fits the awkward dimensions. One company makes one specifically for the 15x50 is and the 18x50 is, but it doesn't fit with the binocular straps or lens covers. Will be happier when I find a case that is satisfactory.
Been using these for years, one of my 10 favorite purchases of all time. Stable enough to track objects when sailing and powerful/stable enough to resolve the rings on Saturn. Only complaint is it eats batteries when it's shut off so i either have to pull the batteries when not in use (which i always seem to forget) or bring extra sets. I do wish they were a little more compact/lighter for hiking/backpacking but you can't cheat physics.
Good Points: Brilliant image stabilisation, probably essential at such high magnification; pretty rugged feel to the body due to the rubber armouring, which also claims to be weatherproof; very clear and bright image.Improvement Points: Very basic bag / case: for the price and the need to protect such vulnerable optics, surely Canon could come up with a more protective case. Also, the case does not have its own strap which means you have to stash it somewhere when you’re using the binoculars. Thirdly, the lens caps are too loose a fit unless you fold down the eye cups. Finally, Main objective lenses are vulnerable to damage - I quickly fitted UV filters to provide some additional protection.
I bought these binoculars for both daytime and astronomical observing and am very happy with them. I calibrated the eyepieces indoors using a yellow pages phonebook cover at 40 feet away. With the IS feature on, I was able to read a 10 digit phone number on the cover that had numbers measuring only one eighth inches tall, pretty impressive. They are great outside for watching nature. At night you can see impressive lunar details of the Moon. They are excellent for stargazing the Milky Way or planets like Jupiter and its moons. Although they are heavier than average binoculars I had no problem with the weight or handling them. The rubber eyecups were fine also. I wear glasses but take them off when using the binoculars. I've had these for over ten years and though they're an earlier model, the only difference is you don't have to hold down the button to engage the mechanism on the newer models. Otherwise once I engage them, everything in the sky "slows down". They're very clear and enjoyable to use, though a little on the heavy side. The Canon 10 power is lighter, I prefer the 15 power.I've always owned quality optics; IE. Questar telescope, Bausch and Lomb pocket vino's, and these canon's.
