I've been using this lens for almost 4 years now and I must say, this is good for wildlife, nature, flower and even portrait photography. Yes, better late than never review! From the get go, I have used it for portrait shots at the almost long end. The reason is the longer the focal length the better "bokeh." The IS of this lens is good and also good for tracking birds. I don't really use 10 fps for my Canon 7D Mark II but when you know what your doing, the camera and the lens will do the rest. As for macro shots,(it cannot substitute a macro lens), I have the ability to go 400mm and not to worry about your shadow and I can crop the image later on. This is a fun lens to use most specially wildlife. This is a sharp lens but of course it is not on par with the 400mm ... This is a fun lens to use most specially wildlife. This is a sharp lens but of course it is not on par with the 400mm primes but for the fraction of the price and weight, I have no complains. In terms of low light capability, it is good still but not that great, I could see some noise during the sunset but it's still manageable. If compared to the Canon 70-200mm f2.8L IS USM II, I prefer the 100-400mm due to the reach but in low light, surely the winner is the f2.8. But if you're mostly shooting in daylight, you can't go wrong with this. This is a well justified cost of a lens! I just wish they made it like the Sony 200-600 as the barrel does not zoom in or out. For a Canon shooter like me, it is worth the money! I give a 5 stars for the performance!

What an amazing lens this is! Mounted on a Canon 5D Mark IV. It focuses very fast. I primarily shoot wildlife and boating images with occasional sports photography. In any situation, this lens always performs. For larger distances I added the X2 extender which doubles the range. Howver, autozoom is disabled with the extender. It is pretty heavy and works best with a tripod. Overall this is an incredible lens that not only looks beautiful but performs each and every time. It made me excited to get back into photography.

I have used this Lens on a 7D2 for birds, both, static and in flight with great effect over a few weeks; also excellent for landscape photography. There are some slight signs of CA's or colour fringing into strong light such as around distant tree branches with the widest apertures, however, this is very minor and can be removed in post processing or by stepping down aperture slightly. As the Lens was purchased with wildlife and sports shooting in mind I was surprised how good it performed for landscapes and street photography; mainly due to the excellent depth of field, consistently high sharpness and ability of the Image Stabilisation. As an example this lens has given a high percentage of excellent 400mm shots at speeds as low as 1/20 hand held and when I ... As an example this lens has given a high percentage of excellent 400mm shots at speeds as low as 1/20 hand held and when I compare against my excellent EF 70-200 f2.8 L IS 11, amazingly, this lens appears to have as sharp or sharper images coupled with better IS.The lens still extends when going from 100mm to 400mm although the circular mechanism is more natural than the push pull of the old 100-400, which, I also own (soon to be passed down the family chain). This new lens is a significant improvement over the old lens, especially when used with the 7d2.Perhaps two things to note are firstly that the closest ring to the camera is now for focussing as apposed to zooming, which, takes a bit of getting used to if you have other canon zooms (assume that was for technical reasons).Secondly the size of the removable tripod foot is too small, therefore, care is needed when resting the camera down if camera is not fitted with a grip as it will tilt backwards. I keep a quick release on the foot, so for me, removing the foot seams a waste of time, I just remember to twist the ring to get it out of the way before I rest the camera down. Once one is aware of these they pose little inconvenience when compared to the gains in performance.I don't usually leave review comments but this Lens is top notch and deserves a mention. Results were brilliant straight out of the box with no micro-adjustment; my copy of this lens gives pin sharp photos.

After doing much research, I finally decided to upgrade from my Canon EF 70-300 4-5.6 IS USM lens. I primarily shoot wildlife and enjoy going to airshows and was looking for a little extra reach. I took this lens out for a test spin at my local animal sanctuary and I was not disappointed! A few impressions -- First, this lens is HEAVY - much heavier than my 70-300, but not heavy enough to make a tripod necessary. Secondly, this lens is crisp. I took some of my cleanest, sharpest photos ever with this lens after my first day out with it. Though, I will say that it also produced a higher percent of soft images, that I would, at this point, attribute to user error. I also noticed a considerable gain in reach from going from 300 to 400mm. I was also impressed with the ... I feel like I have entered a new level of my amateur photography, and I am looking forward to learning more and growing with this lens for years to come.
I had the first model of this lens but I was often disappointed by the results. When everything else was set correctly- aperture, ISO, shutter speed- I was still getting some low quality pictures, even as friends were getting fantastic pictures with their cameras. I read reviews of this lens and decided it was time for an upgrade. I don't specialise in any one type of photography, but like getting the best shots I can of what I see when I go out. The pictures below were from a recent holiday in Cornwall. Rather overcast days with poor light, did lead to some high ISO settings, wide apertures, and some very shallow depth of field shots. Nonetheless, the ones below are four I am very pleased with for their level of detail and I really can't wait to try this lens out ... First, wow. Yes, wow. This lens is incredible! Canon did a solid job in creating a lens that will last. It’s solidly built, balances well, and the image quality is out of this world! I have it paired with my Canon R5 and it’s a fantastic combination!
I bought this lens to replace my older 75-300 (non-L variety) zoom, which I never really cared for, and which often left me wanting a little more reach. (I bought the 75-300 back when I had a crop-body 7D -- so that lens sort of behaved like a 120 - 480mm, for image results; so when I purchased my full-frame 6D, the lens went "back to being 75-300".)The 100-400 is a tank of a lens. Heavy as can be (3.5 pounds!) which can really catch up with you if you have a full day of shooting and carrying a bag full of your other lenses to which you've become accustomed. But it has delivered really great image quality so far in my shooting.I love the included tripod mounting foot & collar -- the lens is far too heavy to traditionally mount your camera base on the tripod, and ... Heavy as can be (3.5 pounds!) which can really catch up with you if you have a full day of shooting and carrying a bag full of your other lenses to which you've become accustomed. But it has delivered really great image quality so far in my shooting.I love the included tripod mounting foot & collar -- the lens is far too heavy to traditionally mount your camera base on the tripod, and leave the weight of the lens hanging from the lens-mount of the camera itself -- the mounting foot solves that -- you mount the lens to the tripod, and the much-lighter camera body hangs "from the lens". And the tripod foot on this lens mount has the super convenient built-in feature of a rotating collar. So you can instantly swing the entire camera from a horizontal to a vertical orientation (thereby preserving a composition you've lined up, for example) without removing the tripod-mounted lens first. You can also detach the lens-foot so it isn't in your way when you're doing purely-handheld shots. It also comes with a zippered, padded lens case, which has a belt-loop on the back so you could hang the padded case (with lens inside) from your belt... it is heavy enough however, that it could slowly start to pull your belt (and pants) down a bit, depending on how tight you wear your belt. The lens is quite a grower -- it extends substantially as you zoom in. With the included lens hood attached and fully zoomed to 400 it creates a massive extension off your camera. The lens hood has a very clever design feature, if you also use rotating filters on your lenses (such as polarizer or variable ND) -- a little cut-out with a sliding "door" in the lens hood lets you rotate your attached filter without first removing the lens hood to reach the filter ring. The Image Stabilization has been superb, for the little bit of hand-held work I've done so far. There's always a trade-off, and of course, I wish this was a slightly faster lens than f/4.5 sometimes. But for the larger part of my shooting, I'm usually in daylight, and usually tripod mounted, so I haven't been seriously hindered by the 4.5 (yet).I really enjoy the close-focusing capability of this lens (ie, how close to your subject you can be, and still achieve focus.) In many ways, it performs like a macro lens that way, letting you fill much of the frame with a closer subject and blur out the background pretty decently.Someday I hope to try this in combination with a Canon tele-extender (1.4 or 2x) for a massive amount of zoom/reach.
I am so sorry not to provide feedback on my purchase. I have been out of commission for about a week and a half so didn't have a chance to use it. Then my camera mirror got stuck on a piece of a lens (that wasn't yours). The lens is marvelous. Now I need a carbon fiber tripod that works with it so it isn't shaky or can fall forward because of the weight. You are a wonderful seller. Vicki
I've waited for years to own this lens and it was worth the wait! I'm amazed at the clarity of photos that I get with this. The image stabilization allows you to capture sharp photos even @ 400mm handheld. I live in Colorado and this lens is a must have for landscape photography. It's heavy but that's ok because I go home with some premium photos of the landscape and Astro landscape. I have a wide angle lens as well but favor this lens because it takes me up close to far away landscapes. You will not regret buying this lens, if you have the cash then just do it!
I bought this lens to use on my now aging Canon 40D, to replace an old Canon telephoto. The lens works well on the camera without any issues and appears to takes really great photos. I took some shots of geese in flight at my local park and was very impressed with the results. The picture quality is in a different league compared to my old tele, and this is despite only having had the lens for under a week.Generally it takes me ages to get used to any new kit, but from what I have seen so far, this lens is exactly what I wanted.I had real reservations about buying this item in used condition. Full credit to the staff at Wex, it arrived promptly and well packaged. The description of the lens condition was absolutely exemplary, overall was in excellent condition ...
