Canon EF 24mm f/1.4 L II USM Lens

$608.33

(390 reviews)

This Canon 24mm Lens F1.4 II USM EF has a wide 24mm focal length, fast f/1.4 aperture, aspherical and UD lens elements. Also the subwavelength structure coating and USM focus motor with full-time manual focus creates sharp images. This superb lens has a large maximum aperture of f/1.4, offering the chance to capture superb low-light photographs, as well as a circular aperture and narrow depth of field to give excellent background blur. Image quality on the Canon 24mm Lens has been greatly improved thanks to the addition of two high-precision aspheric lenses to correct aberration including curvature of field and distortion. Chromatic aberration common in wide-angle shooting is also combated by the inclusion of two UD lenses, ensuring optimum image quality and corner-to-corner detail. Designed for use in digital photography, Canon s patented lens element coating helps minimise the ghosting and flare caused by internal reflections. By eliminating the cause, the coating reduces reflections and helps to deliver crisp, clear images. The near-silent Ultra Sonic Motor (USM) on the Canon 24mm Lens provides super-fast auto-focusing with full-time manual override. The floating internal focus system also helps maintain high image quality throughout the focal range. Canon lenses are built to withstand regular use in the most testing environments. Weather and dust seals provide added protection, and a lens hood and pouch are also included in the package.

A Filter and Lens Protector
16 November 2023Patrick

I have always employed a filter for one, or both of the following reasons: 1, To protect the front element of my expensive lens — and 2, to be a functional filter to whatever purpose. A new UV filter always is purchased with each new lens. This time around, B&H bundled the Chiaro Pro 98-UVATS Ultra-Violet light frequencies filter with the zoom tele I wanted, so I benefited from a real value added package. In my initial test shots as well as field use, I see no unwanted effects and only positive clarity. I would recommend this to a fellow camera club member — a high standard!

Chose this over a 24-70 f/2.8, for weddings and most everything else. Previously have extensively used a 24-105 f/4 (5D series kit lens) and 24-70 f/2.8, and I currently also have a 24mm tilt-shift. I shoot with a 5D Mark IV (full frame). With the 24-* lenses, mostly they tend to be used either at 24 or at 70 or 105, and much less frequently in-between. The 24mm tilt-shift is fantastic for many purposes, but is really a specialty tool with a relatively slow f/3.5 maximum aperture, and no auto-focus. So rather than the 24-* zooms, a 70-200 makes more sense to cover the longer end, with the clearly superior 24 1.4 covering the wide end. The 24 1.4 is also a specialty tool - not a walk-around lens or the only lens you'll ever need, arguments that could be made for the 24-* zooms, depending on your requirements. It's really rather wide, in a way you don't quite notice when using a 24-70 or 24-105 since you can zoom if 24 is too wide. But it's not quite right for landscapes; either something wider, or the 24mm tilt-shift is more appropriate for that. Though I could see it being quite usable, it's probably not the best for rapid-fire photojournalism - there's a reason the 16-35mm is a standard there (and you typically wouldn't shoot wide-open because you risk missing focus, so the 1.4 is wasted in that case). What it's for, then, is portrait and event shooting - and specialty applications like astrophotography. For event running-and-gunning, it works best in a two-camera setup where you have immediate access to another camera with a longer lens (for weddings, we have either a 50 1.2 or a 70-200 2.8 on the second camera, and the 24 1.4 stays on pretty much the entire time). Shooting at 1.4, you feel the need to use a flash far, far less (and it focuses great in low light with a 5D III and IV). For portraits this is a special lens because, with care, you can get a pseudo-medium-format look if shot at 1.4 (with ND filter if outdoors) - wide angle with narrow DOF.

As far as I know, the filter is fine. I had to buy it as my camera dropped going through security and the old filter shattered, but the lens was fine. What I didn't know was that by accepting free shipping, combined with the mid priced cost of the filter, meant that it would go DHL. And that took 10 days to get to me. I think that should be mentioned before the order goes through. I could easily have bought something else to bring the price up to get speedier shipping had I know this was the policy. Or I could have paid for the shipping myself. I was eager to receive this as I didn't want to take the camera out without a filter on board.

Great filter
15 October 2024

I wanted a lens filter mainly for protection of my 24-105 f4 lens, and this one fit the bill rather well. Affordable, very nice, and the photos through this have been fantastic. I would definitely buy this one again, and would definitely get it from B&H with their great pricing, communication, and shipping.

I don't recommend this lens!
21 July 2022

This 24mm f1.4 L lens is horrible! I don't recommend it to anyone. Shame, shame, shame on Canon for not recalling this lens, or providing an extended warranty for defective units. The only L lens that has poor or defective auto-focus. I bought 2 copies from eBay and both have defective auto-focus. Wasted my time shopping for them, waiting for them, and ultimately sending them back. Anyway, I heard that older copies have this problem more pronounced than the newly manufactured ones. If this is true, then I suggest only buying the newer ones or even a brand new one that you can easily return. In my case, I'm completely done with this lens and I'm not interested in getting one anymore.

It Never Fails....
5 September 2024

I've been a customer of LensRentals since their beginning. It never fails, they offer the friendliest, most helpful service out there. Sure, I could tell you about the Canon 24/1.4, its an amazing lens, but its kept in primo shape and ready by a stellar team. They've helped me in some binds over the years and always with "its no problem, thanks for thinking of us!" I cant recommend this company enough!

My New Favorite Prime Lens!
5 August 2019

I was hesitant to purchase this lens since it was released 10 years ago in 2008. I was worried that ten years of technological advancement would have rendered this obsolete, but I was pleasantly surprised. The f/1.4 produces beautiful bokeh in images and still obliterates the background when needed, even at 24mm. The close focus distance means that it is very versatile for many different kinds of photography; it can focus on things less than 1 foot away! The lens is very sharp at f/4 or above. Very minimal distortion for a 24mm. It has less distortion than the 24-70mm f/2.8L II. I use this to film in dark places like nightclubs and this thing is a beast. I love the low light capabilities. It’s been a week of owning this and it hasn’t left my camera.

Not for astrophotography - expected a lot more at that price
7 December 2022

I missed other reviews of this lens before I bought it for astrophotography. That was an expensive mistake. This lens has serious coma on the sides as many others have noted. Shooting at f4 or smaller helps, but that defeats the purpose of buying a fast lens. For the price I expected much more. For other uses it seems like a good lens, but for my purpose I am looking at Samyang/Rokinon and hope I get a good copy on the first try.

To filter or not to filter?
6 December 2023

Some people use them for protection, others convince themselves they're careful enough and don't want another glass element in the light stream. I had avoided them, but recently saw an astro lens that had the coatings damaged by dew. So go the filters! This Chiaro piece is perfectly made, very well packaged in a box that can be used for storage. I plan to add a few more

Watch Out

This filter exploded when I pulled my camera out of the bag. I’ve done amateur photography for over five decades and never broken a filter because I recognize the fragility of a thin piece of glass at the business end of a heavy lens.As far as I know there was no impact or force applied to the lens or filter. When the filter broke, I ended up with quite a lot of glass shards in my hand because I was in the process of removing the lens cap.The glass was obviously not tempered because the shards of glass were extremely small to slightly smaller than my small finger nail. There have been significant improvements in recent years in glass manufacturing of optical glasses such as those used on smartphone touchscreens and lens covers, but Chiaro obviously has not ... MoreThis filter exploded when I pulled my camera out of the bag.
