Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM pancake lens is an unique and very versatile lens. First of all, it's an EF lens and not EF-S like 24mm 2.8 pancake lens. It works on full frame and APS-C sensor Canon DSLR s. (Basically all Canon DSLR s.) 40mm is great on cropped sensor as 64mm equivalent which is wider than 50mm 1.8 STM (80mm equivalent). Great for indoor and out door as normal view lens. I was after this lens for a while now but it's discontinued. Thankfully this is new old stock and the product works as described and as well as all the reviews on this lens state. As it's an STM lens, its autofocus is quieter than my USM lenses, but not by much. At F2.8 it's not super fast but will beat practically every zoomon the market. If you're after a high performance, compact, lightweight EF prime lens at a great price, you can't go wrong.

This 40mm is right in the middle! It is tiny, weighs almost nothing. Even though not a metal "L" lens, this has an solid overall build and feel (perhaps because of its compact size) and has a "as your eye sees" field of view. I've used this on several photo shoots so far in place of my 24-70mmL 2.8 (as a test) and am very pleased with the results. Several times of course I wished for a little wider or closer, but often I could compensate by simply moving closer or farther away. (Not always possible in all situations of course, I understand.) (You could put it in your shirt pocket!) I was able to handhold at 1/20th with the mirror-up setting on my 5DIII and got crisp, sharp photos using just a street lamp for lighting. Very glad I added this to my lens options.
The star system is unfair. For a little lens like this at the price it is it really should have 6 stars but there are much better lenses so I cannot do that. If you want a super light lens that will get the shot very nicely on its own, this is it. Ive used it to shoot some of the fall color change the color is very rich and vivid. It lacks in background blur but it is not a 1.4 L lens either! My primary use for this lens is a small lens to use while my camera is on a gamble. It is not a pro lens, but for that it is rockstar. For the average person using a camera for anything other than getting paid for shots, this lens is perfect. If youre starting out doing portraits and such, get the nifty fifty.

I have 10 lenses in my Canon kit, most of them L, but this EF40mm pancake lens is my second most used lens since I bought it about 4 years ago (24-105mm f/4L IS USM is my most used lens). I absolutely love it. For someone just purchasing their first full frame SLR, I would recommend a general wide-to-tele zoom and this 40mm jewel as a great way to get started. It's sharp and I have no hesitation shooting it wide open @ f / 2.8. The other usage where I see great value in this lens is for situations where I'm worried about ruining an expensive lens. So for me this is typically a windy day at the beach, where I'm concerned about salt spray working its way into the lens. If this lens should die from abuse, I'll replace it with a new one without any regret, because I've gotten plenty of satisfying shots in conditions where I wouldn't have risked other lenses. The build quality doesn't look especially great on the outside, but this lens delivers optically, and is cheap. It's truly an outstanding value. One last thought. You may be contemplating the EF35mm f/2 IS USM, which I also have (and it's a great lens). Although both lenses are close in focal length, I see them as filling 2 rather distinct niches. If I could only have 1, I would take the 40mm pancake because of its compactness and light weight. The one thing this lens gives me that all my other Canon SLR lenses lack is take-it-anywhere/anytime portability.
