If you are in deep thoughts among 50mm 1.2, 85mm 1.2 or 24-70mm 2.8 – you are surely just started your photography career. 24-70mm is great but more universal - so do not expect that it would outperform 85mm and 50mm. 85mm 1.2 – unbeatable for portraits especially outdoors in any light condition but might lose its grip in other cases. 50mm 1.2 probably not that great as 85mm for portraits, but gives you more flexibility with other styles. If your focus is on kids who smile a lot also move fast – buy 50mm (85 AF seems a bit slower, also it will be better for use indoors and to make full height photos) , if you considering pursuing professional career and to make a lot of great portraits – 85mm is your choice. If you are looking for workhorse to cover all possible needs in this range, even including architectural and landscape photography – take 24-70mm 2.8 to home with you tonight.

Focusing speed is not the fastest, but then again this is a portrait not a sport lens. Bokeh? no other 50mm lens will give you the creamy soft blurred background the 1.2L will bring to the table, there is only one wide aperture F1.2 in the market and this is it, besides this lens is made from a company you can trust and give you peace of mind because you know you are buying quality.

It's a beautiful lens and worked great for what I needed. The condition was wonderful, as always. Lensrentals always takes amazing care of me. I wanted to try out a different version of a lens I already have but better. The box from FedEx arrived somewhat water-damaged, but there was a lot of rain that week in the midwest.

With the largest aperture available on the current Canon range, f1.2 eliminates the need for atmosphere-killing flash assistance where available light is almost nonexistent. Weddings, concerts, public functions etc. can all pose problems for photographers working with limited light and wishing to retain the atmosphere of a scene, and while flash is convenient for getting that picture it's not discreet or always acceptable, if even permitted. That's where this and its 85mm stablemate excel. If you're thinking "it's fine, I've got image stabilisation so light isn't a problem" then think again. IS only helps with static subjects in low light and it can't work it's magic if the subject is moving, regardless of how many stops-worth of ... MorePut that flash away folks! Compared to a typical f3.5 or f4L kit lens, this bad boy has an approximate 3.5 f-stop advantage, and lets in roughly 12x more light. That's the first reason you need this lens. The second reason is bokeh, the quality of background blur and out-of-focus highlights. It's simply stunning at f1.2 and creates dreamy backgrounds that make the subject in focus pop in sharp relief. The third reason to buy this lens is the red ring on the front. That ring effectively means your investment will depreciate very slowly, if at all. Canon updates its lenses infrequently so prices hold well, even when a new version is released. Buy secondhand and you'll recoup your investment as long as you take care of it. Negatives? Focus shift is the main one. It's not an issue if you shoot at f1.2 (or stop the lens down in live-view), but the focus point will shift at all other apertures. The second and third problems are the Canon 50mm f1.4 and f1.8 lenses, simply because if you're not shooting at f1.2 they offer nearly everything the f1.2L does at smaller apertures, and without the focus shift issue. The f1.4 sells for around 1/6 the price of the f1.2L, and the humble f1.8 will match the image quality of the f1.2L at certain apertures. The bottom line is this is a proper "art" lens and has a character of its own. It's also a safe investment and can capture images that are way beyond the limits of IS-equipped lenses.

First off, this lens is very expensive for what it is. Yes, it is much better optically than Canon's cheaper 50mm lenses in most (not all) ways, and of course it is bigger, heavier and in the case of the 50mm f/1.8 STM, slower to focus (I have no experience with the 50mm f/1.4 and can't compare). Then there is the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 ART, which is also significantly less expensive and optically vastly superior in every way you can measure on a spec chart. Of course, most of us don't take pictures of spec charts.If you value extreme sharpness from corner to corner, well-controlled chromatic aberrations (color fringing) and the highest resolution possible, this is definitely not your lens. If, on the other hand, you value creamy bokeh, beautiful rendering and exquisite ... MoreFirst off, this lens is very expensive for what it is. I've rented it a few times, and finally bought a copy last week. If buying used, I'd recommend checking the date code and making sure to get a 2014 or later lens as earlier examples had more issues with focus shift. Mine was made in March 2016 and was spot on with my 6D, not requiring any AF micro adjustment. Check yours carefully and adjust the AF, as at f/1.2 depth of field is razor thin.Also, this lens only makes sense if you plan to shoot it at or near wide open. From f/2.8 and smaller you might as well get the 50mm f/1.8 STM, which is an excellent lens, cheap as dirt and so small and light that you will really appreciate it on a long day. I own the 50mm f/18 STM, use it frequently, and will continue to do so even now that I own the f/1.2.There are many reviews of this lens online, and my advise is to read them carefully before buying. This is a truly wonderful lens for portraits, still life, food and some product photography. Its great for photographing objects including objects in nature, but I would say that it makes a mediocre landscape lens whose only advantage over the Sigma or the cheaper Canons is its weather sealing.As for me, obviously I'm in the "love it" camp. I did only give it two stars because for its price, size, weight and optical limitations, it is a poor value for the money. Still, if you want what it does and can afford it, it will likely become one of your favorite lenses in your bag. I know it is one of mine.

My dream lens

My first time using this lens! While visiting my dear friend in San Francisco, he had me shoot pics to update his portfolio. Neither of us have shot pics for 10+ years so took us a bit to warm up to the camera. 2 days, spontaneous running around SF locations & 1200+ pics later, I think we did ok! This lens is a dream to work with! I'm seriously thinking of purchasing it now!

Just adore this lens. Every time I use it I am impressed. Super sharp, lightweight, and the f1.2 makes it brilliant for low light shooting. This lens comes with me everywhere. I use it in street, portraits, commercial product shoots and have even used it in landscapes. If I were to only have one lens, it would be this one.

This is a fantastic lens to use for achieving a very shallow depth of field and a dream like quality to images. It's very easy to photograph something which appears mundane and get an image which is visually very pleasing. Using wide open or close to, does mean that one has to take care in respect of what needs to be in focus to get a usable image.I already owned the Canon 85mm f/1.2 L prior to buying this lens so had a good insight in respect of just how shallow the depth of field is using the lens wide open. I need a 50mm for shooting in tight spaces where the 85mm would not be practical. I already owned the other Canon 50mm options which I have now sold as I should just bought the 50mm f/1.2 L from the outset. The contrast, bokeh and how the images are rendered make this lens very addictive to use.It's a lens which will reward a photographer's efforts and deliver beautiful images, it's also a lens which can frustrate if expecting every image to be sharp in the right places, it does require a degree of care in how one approaches a subject if shooting wide open. One reward is great isolation of a subject from the background which just melts away.On paper there are other lenses of this focal length which some suggest are sharper, focus quicker and cost less. In actuality this lens has great potential to create beautiful, artistic images with qualities which are very difficult to put on a list of specifications. I would buy another without hesitation, were anything to happen to the one I currently own.And as always, great service from Wex.

Excellent rental service with super easy to understand and use shipping instructions - and the piece of tape was the magic touch !! The lens was packaged secure in a hard case and a padded lens case. With dense foam in between. No worries of damage unless ran over by a tank. Lens was sharp and worked as expected. Will do business again.

The lens quality is impressive, very solid. The image quality it gives is out of this world, I never saw another 50mm lens that compares to it, very sharp, and the 1.2 aperture has a blurred background that other lenses with other apertures do not have, the bokeh is like none, there is no other lens like it. This aperture allows you to use it in very low light situations (no lights or off, night and darkness) that gives you a superior advantage over any other lens. The optical quality it has is impressive, the colors it gives are fantastic. The build quality is of the latest Canon line, on the outside it is good quality plastic and solid, in the socket it is metal with protection for the weather. It is heavy (not so much) but due to the quality of the materials, and it is quite large in diameter (72mm) compared to another 50mm (but it is thanks to its opening of 1.2, unique). The AF is tremendously quiet (incredible) and very very fast. The MF ring is soft and has its safety system that if you go over the maximum range it continues to rotate so as not to damage the motor / system. Beyond all its quality in various aspects, the impressive photos it gives and everything else, the lens is aesthetically beautiful. For me it is the best 50mm lens on the market that only Canon can give you (and it is marked by the time it has been on the market since its launch and photographers continue to choose it over all others). At the moment there is no other like it, if you can make a great effort (like me) and get it for yourself, you will not regret it and it will be the best you have ever.
