I love this lens! Its my first lens so I may be biased but where's why I love it.The images are so sharp - even in night time with low light. The focus is easy - auto focus mode on the lens is easy to use with my Canon 90D.The lens feels sturdy in the hand and attaches easily. I also got a UV filter and lens hood (3rd party) to protect it from harsh direct light. The lens plays nice with the camera body's internal auto focus system as well. I can focus with the shutter button as well as by tapping the display screen. If you want a lens to get you that Bokeh effect, this is the one! Plenty of other great resources online about how to maximize use of this lens.

While my main use of this lens is astrophotography, I do pull this out for the occasional traditional photography as well, and I agree that everyone should at least own a 50mm prime lens! The lens produces good, crisp images, and I really enjoy the bokeh this lens can create.I find the autofocus works well, quick and accurate. It keeps up with 99% of the action I'm photographing. In terms of my main focus, this works great as an ultra-widefield lens for astrophotography. As tempting as f/1.4 sounds for light gathering, I found that you need to stop it down to at least f/4 or f/5.6 to prevent the stars along the edges from losing their roundness.

This has become the main lens that I use in my bag. Overall you won't be disappointed, I do feel it can be a bit slow on the shutter, maybe that is the adapter since I use this lens with my mirrorless camera, but I still think is a great purchase. I used it for a birthday theme park shoot, family session, and got amazing photos with it. I have used it in low lighting, bright scenes and it picks up colors and lighting very well. I cannot speak too much on the video aspect, my intended use is pictures, but I feel like even with video the lens works well. It feels great in the hand, however it can be pretty heavy for my Canon M50. That doesn't scare me from using the lens, again add in the adapter and it's weighty. I did have a hard time with fitting desired background in certain shots (still playing around with it), but that's not necessarily a negative, it just shows how close and how far you can get with the lens depending on what you are shooting. So far, I am not disappointed with my lens!

We bought a 5D Mark IV used and needed a lens. This was available and we both like 50mm so we picked it up. So far we are both in love with the image quality and versatility. Sometimes the autofocus hunts or misses the target. But in general it's fast and accurate and has helped get great images. It's great in low light and gets sharper if you close it up a bit. So far we have done portraits and people photography as well as a few days wandering around the city. It's lightweight and compact which is nice on such a big camera body. Definitely recommended.

Little gem!
10 August 2023

This was one od my first lenses bought some 15 years ago and its still in my wedding bag. Its a small gem, weighs nothing and delivers superb quality pics from f2.0-2.2. I had the 50 1.2 but eventually sold it as it was less practical, and my 35 1.4 works better in super low light. I had a chance to compare with the newer 50 1.8 but didn't like the bokeh there, the 50 1.4 delivers dreamy smooth bokeh. If you really need to shoot below f1.8-2.0 then you need to look elsewhere (RF 1.2 or sigma but these are heavy beasts)

So good, especially if your subjects are human

This was the first fixed lens I purchased and although I loved the image quality immediately, I was prompted to write this review four years later because in going through my image archive, time and again, it is the images captured with this lens that really catch my eye. I have subsequently bought some L series glass, so this 50 1.4 has been on my camera (80D) less frequently of late, but now that my archive review has reminded me, it'll be back on regular rotation. Especially excellent for flashless indoor shooting (I hate the irritation of flashes and the way they effect an otherwise relaxed social gathering), but also great in full daylight. The extra shallow depth of field is fun to play with, but the image quality is indiscernible (to my eye) from that of my precious 70-200 IS 2.8. I've never used the nifty fifty (1.8) so maybe the extra cost for this one won't be worth it to some, but the (utterly non-scientific but nonethess striking) comparisons provided by my retrospective review of about 30,000 images taken over four years lead me to recommend this lens wholeheartedly to anyone who wants to inobtrusively capture intimate, butter-smooth images, particularly of humans in social/street settings.

Soft focus
15 December 2021

Had I watched the several YouTube reviews of this lens prior to buying it I would most likely have not gotten this lens. True to the reviews the focus at 1.4 and 1.6 is very soft; not unusable, but something that has to be sharpened in post.I am not sure how much use this lens will get given that my photography interests are mostly landscapes, macro, and wildlife. I will have to use the lens more to find its potential as far as my interests go. I have not really tried it out on low-light landscape pictures. I did try to use it hand held on an indoor model train layout with pretty lousy results, but that might be learning curve. At a recent event I did make a point to focus on individual people and the bokeh effect is nice in that the subject stands out clearly ... MoreHad I watched the several YouTube reviews of this lens prior to buying it I would most likely have not gotten this lens. I shot them at 2.8 and the subject is nice and crisp. Of my zillion or so photographs I think that these are the only 3 where the subject are people, so I don't see me using the lens that much for that kind of picture.

Just something to keep in mind when purchasing this lens - for all the beginners out there. If you want the same field of view on a crop sensor look for a wider lens like a 30mm (30 * 1.7 ≈ 50). Another lens I'd recommend for crop sensor cameras is the Sigma Art 18-35mm f 1.8 lens, which is absolutely phenomenal.************************************************************************Anyways, this lens practically lives on my 5D Mark IV and is absolutely versatile for portraits, street photography, architecture, and event photography. I have noticed some chromatic aberration in some backlit scenarios, but overall the sharpness and quality is great! I've had this lens for quite some time and I can safely say that this is a really great prime lens that I think still holds up well to this day.Even at f/1.4, the image looks sharp and the bokeh is very pleasing with its 8-blade diaphragm. There is chromatic aberration when wide open, however. But at this price range, that is to be expected, honestly; and if you're lucky, Adobe Lightroom can probably help eliminate it if you're taking photos. The autofocus for photography is pretty decent. The optics and image quality at this price are very impressive. If its price feels a little too much, the Canon 50mm f/1.8 is also a great bang for your buck at less than half of the price of the f/1.4 version.

You need a prime lens and this is the one you want.

Everyone who shoots DSLR must have a prime. A 50mm prime used to be the first lens you had in the old SLR days and it teaches you framing, field of depth and other lessons. Your prime lens will help you take the best, most artistic photos ever. It will become your goto for those captures in which you express your soul. If you own a Canon DSLR and are at the prosumer level/student then this is your prime lens. The USM series are a middle ground between the cheap STM lenses and the uber pro L series. It features fast focus, a 1.4f open aperture for difficult lighting or narrow field of depth, useful bokeh, and crisp images. I pulled of some wonderful shots my first time out on a photo-expedition to the park capturing ducks that did not know the meaning of stand still. This is an EF Mount and with a crop frame camera, like my Eos 80D, you will need to multiply the aperture setting and focus length by 1.6 to get the actual effective values. You can look up the why but trust me for now. It shouldn't mess with you too much as the metering will guide you accurately. It would be necessary to know if you are going hardcore manual with an external light meter and slave strobes. It's durable metal casing is what I'm most happy about. My last 50mm was an STM series and though I did get some great portraits with it, it lacked the strength to survive. I shoot music festivals and occasionally I find myself in the mosh pit. This is a durability test for your equipment (as well as your knees). You just put it on burst/auto/sports and resign your soul to whatever god you worship. I kid. Most of the people in those pits are cool and will watch out for you. None the less, that is where me, my durable Canon Eos 80D, my arthritic knees, and my new 50MM 1.4f USM are going to end up. I have faith that this rig will not only be a survivor but a producer of fine work.
