The image quality is literally better at f/2.0 than any other mid-range zoom I've used, even the RF 24-70mm f/2.8 at a whole stop slower. If you're one of the few who need a lens like this, you likely already know it. Just do it! Being able to shoot wide open at f/2 aperture and retain incredible sharpness is fantastic. Unless you are needing a faster lens, such as a 1.2 or 1.4, this lens will cover all those focal lengths. Plus not having to carry any or all of those lenses makes this a savings in weight for carrying around and space in your pack. The obvious downside of the lens is the size and weight. The lens itself is simply big and heavy, but with the potential to lighten your carrying load overall, as outlined above. The weight of the lens is a non-issue for me as I hand-carried my R6 with this lens attached to it all day, walking around and hiking without issue, but it is something that others should take into consideration. It is a big, big lens. Also, the front filter size is 95mm, which means buying UV filters, ND filters, CPL filters are also more expensive.Overall, if you are really in the market for a zoom lens in the range of 24-70 or 28-70, I would give this a serious consideration as you will be getting a phenomenal lens.

Excellent lens except when it has "haze" problem
11 February 2022

I believe that there are many excellent copies of this lens available, but quite a few copies have what is called a "haze" problem (suggesting that the inner elements can simply be cleaned). I bought such a lens on eBay and found that the haze issue is a very serious problem. The problem is often due to glue deterioration within a doublet lens in the 4th (innermost) group. The doublet lens consists of two pieces of glass (known as a flint and a crown) that are glued together face to face. The doublet is sealed in a plastic housing. The entire unit has the serial number CY1-2532. None of these units seem to be available anywhere on the planet. I repaired mine by disassembling the plastic unit with a small woodcarver's chisel. The entire unit has the serial number CY1-2532. None of these units seem to be available anywhere on the planet. I repaired mine by disassembling the plastic unit with a small woodcarver's chisel. Once I removed the doublet I soaked it in Methylene Chloride for at least 30(!) days. Be careful this is a volatile and dangerous chemical. I then carefully split the doublet apart with my fingernail (the glass can easily crack at any point during this process). I then cleaned the surfaces with more Methylene Chloride and alcohol. I glued the doublet back together with Norland 61 optical adhesive. Properly aligning the two halves of the double is difficult (without special equipment) especially since the flint and crown have different diameters. After the lens is re-assembled it still needs to be aligned (which is a whole other matter). Ultimately the only expense of this repair was the cost of the chemicals, adhesive, a chisel, and a UV light -- but the repair is very time-consuming and a lot can go wrong. In 2020 Midwest Camera Repair gave me a quote of $425 to do the complete repair (using a baking process rather than using chemical solvents) and included aligning the lens.

Great IQ but Insufferably Heavy
2 June 2022

Great IQ is a given with the RF 28-70 and the price is what it is. The real question is whether you can handle the weight, and it's hard to know without trying it. Supported with two hands, it is your left hand that will get fatigued. You'll pick it up and, at first, you'll think it's not as bad as you imagined. The longer you hold it, the more you'll question this first impression. On my R5, I found that I could securely manipulate the body and lens with just my right hand on the camera's grip until I released my thumb to back button focus. Then it felt like a matter of time before I dropped the whole kit. In other words, I wouldn't use this without a camera strap. If you own the RF 100-500, the RF 28-70 is almost the same weight. The 28-70 is more compact but it is front heavy so the experience of holding and supporting it is pretty similar. I ended up returning the lens. As much as I hate switching out primes, I hated trying to hold the RF 28-70 for extended periods more.

First of all, there is no better way to experiment with lenses than this company. So easy.Second of all, this lens could possibly be too heavy for you, if you are like me (older, creaking...) I did a two-hour shoot with it, outside (it was hot), and my hand, elbow, and back are still complaining. By the end of the shoot I was definitely introducing some camera shake. I know others have commented on the weight, and here I am confirming it.No doubt it is the best single lens I've shot with, but I think my days of carrying around lenses of this weight are behind me.If anyone knows of another EF lens in a similar focal range that can come anywhere remotely close to this lens's performance, at a lighter weight, I'd be interested to know what it is. It's Big and Heavy, but Will Be a Time Saver
28 June 2022

I have used this lens for two different studio sessions and have shot roughly 500 images with it up to this point. The other reviews are pretty much spot on with this lens. It is heavy, and after about 4 hours, you will know it's there. However, when mounted to an R5 with a battery grip, the overall weight doesn't get in the way of doing things, it just tires you out a little bit.Optically, the lens behaves much like my previous EF 35mm f/1.4L and EF 50mm f/1.4L which I would use for location shoots. Using the RF 28-70mm gives me both of those focal lengths at nearly the same wide open aperture. Since I routinely shot at f/2 or tighter (for focus needs on a 5DS R), this lens will be great outdoors. The beauty is in the studio where I have limited room and need the zoom. I've been using an EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II with great results, but now I can get much softer focus in the studio with a zoom lens. The weight might make me tired, but the benefit of being able to do a session without the need for changing lenses will make up for the extra fatigue. Maintaining the tempo and energy of the session will actually reduce the amount of time that you have to carry this lens.My only gripe about this lens is the 95mm filter threads. I have a kit based around what used to be the largest 82mm filters with a Lee 100 filter mount. This lens will be a bit problematic to use in the landscape setting because I have yet to find an adaptor that will work for the Lee 100 system that doesn't cause vignetting. Of course, my few round filters don't fit this lens at all. I do understand that to make this an f/2 lens, there was no way around this fact, so I'm not deducting any points for that feature, it is just a consideration which I knew going into the purchase.

It's called The Beast for a reason
27 April 2023

I went back and forth between purchasing this or an RF 85mm prime. In the end I went with the 28-70mm and, after using it on a paid shoot in a recording studio, am very pleased with the results I got with both the lens and my R6. The lens produces very nice bokeh that, while I'm sure it doesn't truly compare to F1.2, it still looks great and blows out the backgrounds perfectly. It was also really nice to be able to zoom in significantly at different points in the shoot. The downside to this lens twofold. Its quite heavy for its size. I got used to the weight but am still getting used to getting a good handhold on it. Also, the unique focal length of 28-70 would be better suited being a 24-70 but I digress. All in all, a great lens and definite happy edition to my bag.

This is an incredible lens. Reviewers say that this is a nearly-impossible statement piece from Canon, and while I don't know the market history or the difficulty of the optics involved, to use the lens, it's an easy statement to accept. It isn't as intensely precise as say the 85mm f/1.2, but it can get close over a zoom range that hits several prime hotspots. Most importantly, it brings that ineffable cool factor to shots, and can instantly switch subject and style while doing so. Of course, in doing all of this, the lens is very expensive, and also quite imposing physically. Although an obviously strong street lens, it is probably the least discrete thing you can attach to an R body, being both heavier and wider than the 100-500mm and more standoffish at ... MoreThis is an incredible lens. It's a marked contrast to the Leica fantasy of a light body and an inoffensive lens with just right softness and lazy focus... it's a beast that requires effort to shoot and rewards you with vivid images and biting detail.

The 28-70 exceeded all my expectations!!

This lens is incredible!! I cannot say enough good things about the 28-70. I use this lens paired with my Canon R6 for mostly wedding and portrait photography. The auto focus is wicked fast, the photos are always tack sharp, and the bokeh is very beautiful. I’ve always preferred prime lenses. I was unsure if this lens would be good enough to replace the need to carry around multiple prime lenses in my camera bag, but I’m happy to say it did!! This is my go to lens for all my professional client work!I will say I do not recommend this lens for travel because of the size.*The photos I attached are not straight out of camera they have been edited in post
