I'm not sure how to update my 1/30/24 so here is my second review:In all but the easiest of situations, the autofocus is a serious problem...very crippled from the R5. I've been talking with Canon about this for 8 months (with examples). If you get a clean look at a predator or a primate with no interference then it will usually do the job while still back focusing. But forget about it with moose, elk, giraffes, elephants and so on. It's just not usable and you are frequently having to shift to small sport or something else to hit critical focus. Sometimes that isn't even enough and you resort to manual focus. The manual focus is contrast-based meaning that you have no focusing tools in a low contrast situation. Canon is full aware of this yet refuses to provided ... MoreI'm not sure how to update my 1/30/24 so here is my second review:In all but the easiest of situations, the autofocus is a serious problem...very crippled from the R5. Man oh man is this a great lens. Couple with the R5, this lens makes great photos. This is the setup I've been wanting forever for. I am a hobbyist and took a long while to save up for this camera and lens (I used B&H's 0% interest credit card to pay for it. I just finished paying for the camera and now bought the lens the same way. Thanks B&H).I did my due diligence before I purchased this lens. In one of the reviews I read, the reviewer stated that this lens is now glued to his camera he loved it so much. Spent much time deciding on this lens. I almost went for the new RF 24 - 105mm at f/2.8. I decided that this lens would be took heavy and too long for my liking. I considered the RF 28 - 70 F/2.0. It was really made for video (I don't do that much video) and the clincher was no stabilization. Additionally, It was a lot more expensive that the RF 24 - 70 f/ 2.8.I use Capture One for processing my raw files. The sharpness is breathtaking. The only camera's that is sharper, in my experience, is the Sigma DP1 and DP2 (those images are so sharp it will make your eyes bleed). Those images are TOO sharp for my liking. I sharpen my images and then do a slight blur to dampen the sharpness a little but not to lose detail.I like to shoot wide and love my 28mm prime. I am going to sell all my other lenses and stick with just this one lens. Although I shoot mostly wide, I do like the ability to zoom in. One issue is my 28mm prime has almost no distortion. This lens does distort at 28mm. I don't care though. If you are on the fence, just do it. Pull the trigger and get this lens. You will not be disappointed. Thanks for playing along and Ta Ta for Now.

Randomly and without incident my R5c has stopped powering on reliably. It ruined a once in a lifetime trip to Eastern Europe as I was suddenly unable to take any of the photos/videos I had planned, and when I called Canon for assistance NO help was offered other than schedule a repair when you get back to the States.Powers on, then won't. I do every trouble shooting tip imaginable, switch batteries, use a battery grip - nothing. Then it turns on for 40 minutes, turns off and won't come back for two days. Works for a day, then not at all. I am a professional filmmaker/photographer and this makes the device completely unreliable and therefore useless. I have never had this problem with my 5Dmk IV, my 5DS, my various cinema cameras (C300 II, C70, etc.) I don't have ... MoreRandomly and without incident my R5c has stopped powering on reliably. I am furious and disappointed.Honestly, the camera takes amazing photos, has fantastic video capabilities and has incredible potential overall. However, not being able to trust whether or not it will turn on (!!!) makes it completely worthless. It's like having an awesome, luxury car that randomly shuts down without warning or any way to fix it. Doesn't matter how comfortable and awesome it is, you would simply never drive it...Very sad about this. C300 II, C70 (even my old EOS 70D) range between 12 and 3 years old, have been dragged up and down mountains, used on shoots in awful and unpredictable weather, etc. NEVER had an issue like this.

Don't think for a second that you can just grab the camera and go with it. You need a multiple batteries but ideally you will need a external battery to operate this camera. Battery life is unacceptable. So if you decide to purchase this camera be sure to buy a cage and gimbal, external battery etc. Its an amazing quality camera but not ideal or practical. The R5 will do more then you need the C is for cinema and you need to commit to making it look like a cinema camera with all the attached gear to have it operate without issues. This camera should have the same battery setup as the canon c70. Canon failed in this area. Other then that if you get it all set up its one of the best but the price you pay for the camera add another 500-800 to the price for the rig ... MoreDon't think for a second that you can just grab the camera and go with it. I'm a photographer and bought an RF 24-70mm that after less than 1 year had insects inside.Although the lens is supposed to be sealed and within warranty, it is sent to be repaired, which gives me a negative response and offers me an assumption for its cleanliness. It seems ridiculous to me to pay more than 2 thousand euros for an objective supposedly sealed against the weather and after 1 year there are animals inside the objective, and I am not covered by the Canon guarantee.I leave you the video attached so that you are ashamed of the material you sell.At least Canon could have the humility of recognizing that the lenses are not sealed and therefore not worth what you pay for them, cleaning these problems at no cost was the least they had to do, for years ... MoreI'm a photographer and bought an RF 24-70mm that after less than 1 year had insects inside.Although the lens is supposed to be sealed and within warranty, it is sent to be repaired, which gives me a negative response and offers me an assumption for its cleanliness. It seems ridiculous to me to pay more than 2 thousand euros for an objective supposedly sealed against the weather and after 1 year there are animals inside the objective, and I am not covered by the Canon guarantee.I leave you the video attached so that you are ashamed of the material you sell.At least Canon could have the humility of recognizing that the lenses are not sealed and therefore not worth what you pay for them, cleaning these problems at no cost was the least they had to do, for years using UNSEALED lenses from low-end brands . and I've never had a problem, now I'm inverting it on a premium lens like this one which isn't worth the inversion.I really regret buying this lens.
Started in Canon Rebels. Moved on to Panasonic GH series for professional work. Most recently working with Blackmagic pocket series. The Canon R5 C just does everything well. Very customizable and ergonomically designed body. You need some kind of power solution though, which I am used to coming from Blackmagic cameras. Just setting up the camera for a specific workflow and some menu diving can eat up a battery. It's better since the recent firmware update.Raw footage in Resolve is great. I don't enjoy working with the raw files in Adobe Premiere, it's less intuitive. Usually I choose the 10 bit MXF codec for smaller jobs.I prefer the look of lens IS without sensor stabilization, even when coming from a GH5. Having two cameras in one is pretty special too. I've handed it off to a photographer who was familiar with Canon systems and had no trouble getting great photos. Can't say the same for the GH5 (Why is my shutter speed stuck at 180?)Biggest complaint? I wish the LCD monitor was a little bigger. I don't like attaching a monitor via the micro HDMI, but for the work I do it's not usually necessary. The ability to magnify while recording is really nice, and it has great in-body assists like false color, peaking, and waveform.Anecdotally I've had positive responses from every camera system I've used, the variables are always about facilitating the work you want to make. This camera definitely doesn't get in your way.
I love this camera. It is so versatile. I love it so much that I now have 2 of them.Of course you need to get over the micro HDMI and the battery life but once you find the way around it, it a workhorse.I purchased the Smallrig micro to full HDMI adapter and I use Smallrig V-mount batteries. Now with the new LP-E6P batteries, you get 90min with the camera.I love the 8k raw for talking head (so I can scale in for a talking head and hide cuts) and the 4K XFAVC in C-Log 3 is so easy to grade. You can customize all the buttons on it and if you use RF lenses with it, you can customize the ring as well.I use my R5C’s with RF15-35 f 2.8 and RF24-105 f2.8 and that’s the perfect combo for me.I wish it had C-log 2 but the dynamic range is good enough for me.I also ... MoreI love this camera. I used two C70s and an R5 for nearly 2 years. So, of course, I eventually replaced one of the C70s and the R5 with an R5c. It’s been nearly a year since I bought the R5c and I would trade my remaining C70, which I love, straight-up for another R5c.What makes the C70 superior in many people’s eyes are the internal NDs, the DGO sensor (dynamic range), the pro in-camera audio, the full hdmi out, Clog2 and the native battery capacity. All of these factors make the C70 the ideal run and gun and wedding camera. I meant for the R5c to be my B camera, but I’ve found myself grabbing it instead of the c70 more and more. The reason? When I edit, I prefer the sharper look of the R5c and the convenience of full frame. The battery problem isn’t a problem if you have abunch of Sony NPs lying around like most of us do. Get the smallrig cage, the pistol grip, and the battery plate to shoot all day. The cage also fixes the micro-HDMI problem. I shoot mostly on primes (the new hybrid 35mm and my trusty 135mm f1.8), so a mini matte box and a 6 stop ND filter solve the ND problem for outdoor shooting. I never record audio in-camera (except for syncing in post), so that’s not a problem. (I have several Tascam dl10 pros and a zoom f3 for the shotgun mic.) Dynamic range is not something my employer nor my side gig clients care much about, but if they did, I think we can all agree that the average person would not be able to appreciate the difference in 13.5 usable stops verses 15ish. In practice, I prefer the noise decrease I get when manipulating the dual base iso in the R5c to the extra DR I can get from the C70 anyway. The fact that I can “de-rig†my R5c and take gigs as a professional photographer (which I do) is the biggest reason why the R5c is the best thing in the canon universe going into 2025. Now, if only we had 4k raw . . .
Before I purchased this camera I already owned Panasonic GH cameras (4 of them), Blackmagic Pocket 6k (3 of them), Red Komodo and more. So I have some experience. I am very please with Canon R5C. The features I like best are: 1- ability to assign functions to buttons. This is huge. I have waveform, false color, slow motion etc available with one touch. This saves so much time when you’re rushing to get that shot. 2 - Weight. This is light. Even with my Core Edge battery it is still light. And also with my Core batteries I have shot for over 5 batteries without changing batteries. Yes the internal battery may not be good (even though Canon’s new LP6 battery gives 50% more time) you can power this camera just fine if you are coming from cinema cameras like RED or ... MoreBefore I purchased this camera I already owned Panasonic GH cameras (4 of them), Blackmagic Pocket 6k (3 of them), Red Komodo and more. I have waveform, false color, slow motion etc available with one touch. This saves so much time when you’re rushing to get that shot. 2 - Weight. This is light. Even with my Core Edge battery it is still light. And also with my Core batteries I have shot for over 5 batteries without changing batteries. Yes the internal battery may not be good (even though Canon’s new LP6 battery gives 50% more time) you can power this camera just fine if you are coming from cinema cameras like RED or Blackmagic. Now many people argue that lack of clog2 is a deal breaker. And though I would prefer clog2 (because shadows curve in clog3 are limited), I have gotten some really great images and l kind of like clog3 now that I know how to grade it. I also like the dual base iso and though it’s not Sony in low light it is very capable for what I need. I don’t reach for my Komodo as often since I got this camera. I’m not saying it’s better than my Komodo but if my final delivery is for television or online this camera is more than good enough and will save me hard drive space.
I love my R5C, it's one of the best cameras I ever had. From the video quality, codec options, menu system, range of accessories, lenses, autofocus performance, photo quality, and many other features, it really is no match for the competition. However, they packed so much stuff into this small body that it's sometimes not enough for its power.- Be aware that depending on your needs. you might need a battery solution or bring many LP-E6- Be aware that the Bluetooth transfer doesn't work on video mode- Be aware that there is no remote trigger on video modeApart from those two things this camera is a dream to use and the results are always amazing.Standing ovation to canon
