Canon products are always high quality. I've come over from Nikon, which also has high quality gear. This RF 70-200 lens is the perfect complement to the R5. It's not as large as the EF version due to the fact that it does extend on zoom, not enclosed, but that really helps with the portability of the lens. One of the reasons many people enjoy mirrorless is to get rid of some of the size and weight. While you can't cheat quality glass, you can think outside the box to see what can be done to accommodate less weight. Canon accomplished this with the 70-200 2.8 RF glass. High quality, excellent performance and a smaller package without sacrificing image quality. Well done, Canon.

I am professional photographer shooting a R5. While the EF version was very good on the R5 it felt unbalanced especially with the converter piece. This lens is significantly lighter and smaller. There is a bump in auto focus speed and sharpening I believe. It's a delight to handle and the IS works great. I need to say I am a bit concerned with the extended zoom with this lens as my rental house has said there has already been issues with particles getting into this lens. Therefore, I will hold on to the EF for now as it too is a fine lens.

I was hesitant with purchasing this lens mostly for the price. I always buy my lens used or refurbished which helps save money. This was my most expensive lens purchase to date and I was considering the f4 after watching reviews of both the f4 and 2.8. I can't say much about the f4 since I've never used this one but the f2.8 is absolutely insane! Once I pulled it out of the box and started shooting my jaw hit the ground. I still believe the f4 is fully capable of suiting any needs as well if you're one of those people who's just trying to squeeze by from having to spend the money I say go f2.8. It's worth the money!

Decent lens with minor complaints
13 November 2022

I have only had the lens a short amout of time and am coming from having used an EF 70-200L f2.8 IS lens for many years. So far I have not noticed much of a difference in image quality from my EF lens. Maybe slightly better but I dont think most people would be able to look at an image taken with each and be able to identify the image taken with the newer lens. The build quality of the lens seems solid. The lens weight is less than the EF lens and the form factor of the new lens is more compact. One draw back of the more compact size is that the RF extenders do not work with this lens. I do not like that the layout of the control, focus, and zoom rings are swapped from the layout of my RF 24-105 f4 L IS lens. The zoom ring seems stiffer and requires more turning for full zoom compared to my old lens. Again I think I will get used to this over time. All and all I do like the lens but it was very expensive and I am not sure that I wouldnt have been better off keeping my old lens and spending the money on a different lens. As I shoot with the lens more I will add to the review if my opinion about the image quality or ergonomics changes.

Good but not great

This lens almost hit everything out of the park.Pros: Sharp, light & compactCons: Focus ring is further out than before and you have to really crank your hand/wrist in order to hit 200mm. Before I could roll my thumb and I could go from 70-200mm and all is well. With this it literally takes me 2 or 3 tries before i hit 200mm.Not the end of the world but definitely not ideal.Normally we buy two of everything but with this flaw, we will not be buying another.Overall I like the lens, but the focus ring and having to crank your hand/thumb to hit 200 is annoying

Great lens, with a few small issues
4 January 2022

This lens replaces an EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III USM plus adapter on our R6. Overall, the whole package is smaller and much easier to travel with and handle. We originally removed the tripod foot, but found that to be the best place to anchor our shoulder sling strap. We use this setup primarily for indoor sports photography. The zoom dial amount is a bit slower (greater turn needed to change zoom) than the old EF version and the dial location a little different, but after an hour of shooting I didn't notice the difference. The hood is a nice improvement over the old one, but I rarely use it. I did encounter one Err 60 Lens error on the first big day shooting, but turned off the power and waited for the camera to shut down and it worked normally after I turned it on ... MoreThis lens replaces an EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III USM plus adapter on our R6. I only mention it because I never saw a lens error on the EF version despite tens of thousands of pics taken.Overall I definitely recommend this lens if you plan to travel a lot with it or frequently carry your camera. This smaller size and slightly lighter weight is worth it.

Impressive quality
21 July 2022

The pictures I've been taking already with this lens on my R6 are so crisp and beautiful! Portraits are so much nicer too as you can better isolate your subject. This lens is definitely pro. Love the 3 IS settings & excited to try some action panning! When I first got the lens and started using it, it seemed as though it was squeezing too much juice form my battery, but I think my battery was just pretty drained. I've further tested it after that point and it seems to be doing ok. I have the 24-70mm too and these 2 are a dream! Love the wide aperture. Ready to test it at some point at a Formula 1 race!

One lens - many uses
1 June 2022

This lens is the latest version of the 'zoom lens family' I recommend when only one lens can be taken on photographic trip. I've taken the EF 70-200mm F2.8 L on multiple trips to Europe and the RF 70-200mm F2.8L is a further refinement of those capabilities at lower weight for mirrorless cameras. The RF 70-200mm F2.8 L further extends the low light capability, particularly in European cathedrals and museums where supplemental flash or tripods are not allowed. At the 70mm aperture it can be useful in inconspicuous street photography, especially when a slightly elevated shooting position such as a staircase or peak of a hill is available.

Very Nice - But I Like the EF Version Better
1 July 2022

The Canon EF 70-200 F2.8 L was my favorite portrait lens of all time and still is after trying the RF version. The EF version to me was more comfortable in the hand and mainly the zoom ring's action is way smoother. The zoom ring in particular is very stiff and uncomfortable, I shoot runway fashion shows and need to instantly zoom and track the models coming down the runway and this lens is too stiff to do that. I am hoping it will loosen up over time.I do like the smaller size when it collapses, but I never minded the weight or heft of the EF version. Time will tell if I will grow to like this one as much as the EF version.

Where No Lens Has Gone Before

After capturing thousands of great sports photos over several years, my EF 70-200mm f2.8 L IS stopped focusing properly right in the middle of the championship round of an NCAA Regional wrestling tournament I was covering. But what could have been a horror story instead had a happy ending. My RF 24-105mm f4 L had enough reach to capture the rest of the tournament, thanks in part to my EOS R6's lowlight performance. And repairing the 70-200 took only a few days from the time I shipped it until Canon had it back on my porch. The turnaround was quick enough that I had the lens back in time for my next assignment. I credit that to my Canon Professional Services membership, which also saved me literally hundreds of dollars on the repair. But my favorite part of this ... MoreAfter capturing thousands of great sports photos over several years, my EF 70-200mm f2.8 L IS stopped focusing properly right in the middle of the championship round of an NCAA Regional wrestling tournament I was covering. And repairing the 70-200 took only a few days from the time I shipped it until Canon had it back on my porch. The turnaround was quick enough that I had the lens back in time for my next assignment. I credit that to my Canon Professional Services membership, which also saved me literally hundreds of dollars on the repair. But my favorite part of this story is that this incident gave me an excuse to buy an RF70-200mm f2.8 L for my EOS R5 and R6 bodies. I was very happy with the adapted EF lens' sharpness, and focusing speed and accuracy, and would've been content to keep it awhile.Had the EF not crapped out, I wouldn't have known what I was missing. What was that? An even better performing lens in virtually every way, according to my unscientific assessment. The RF's focusing is faster and more accurate, and it produces more keepers than the EF. It's images are consistently sharper and brighter than those captured by the EF, at least to my eyes. After reviewing the first few hundred shots captured with the RF, my wife, who has her own EF 70-200, agreed. Finally, I've fallen head-over-heals in love with the RF's form factor. It is slightly chubbier than the EF, which hasn't been a detriment in the least. But even if I minded the girth, I'd gladly accept it knowing that the RF is inches shorter than the EF when both lenses are set to 70mm. The difference is dramatic when you're shoehorning an EF 70-200 attached to a body into a camera bag. Paraphrasing Capt. James T. Kirk, the RF 70-200 goes where no EF 70-200 has gone.I wholly, totally, and unequivocally love this lens. Since I shoot a lot of ice hockey rink-side and typically press the lens hood of my 70-200 against the glass to reduce reflections, I wish the RF barrel didn't expand and contract as it zooms in and out. But the lens feels so good in the hand, handles so well, and comes with such a sturdy lens hood that I've hardly been bothered by the expansion/contraction. It's actually a very small price to pay for a very small lens that delivers big results on every other level.
