After a workshop in Tuscany with Mads Peter Iversen, I learned I needed to lighten the load. I love my Canon EF 2.8 trinity lenses, but they will stay at home. Shooting landscapes, it's time to take advantage of the Canon mirrorless camera system and the lightweight, quality L lenses available.I specifically purchased the RF 15-35 f2.8 for the trip and I love the lens, but looking back, taking my RF 24-105 f4, paired with this lens would have allowed me to get all the shots. After watching Dustin Abbott's reviews of both the RF 24-105 f4 and RF 70-200 f4, and seeing firsthand for myself, I think the image quality is exceptional for both lenses, so I am not compromising when capturing those foggy Tuscany landscape images. This lens will travel with me on all ... Purchased this for its size/weight. Very easy to carry around when traveling. Excellent sharpness and color rendition. No issues with maximum f 4.0 for outdoor travel and even used it indoors with EOS R5 at higher ISO without much noise (which can usually be cleaned up using Topaz DeNoise AI). Still have my EF 70-200 F 2.8 which I will use when I need to take pictures under low light conditions (e.g., indoor parties or with more subject separation from background) but this lens' easy portability allows me to take it with me more often when I previously would have left the EF lens home due to size/weight.

A wonderful alternative to the 2.8 70-200. The compact size, low weight, beautiful rendering, and ergonomics make this a better choice to the slightly heavier 2.8 unless you truly needed slightly more bokeh and a touch more speed. Oh, and its about $1000 USD less!Focusing, zooming, the buttons...everything works well and very smooth. It is truly amazing that it is so light and compact, and the zoom ring being the first adjustment point is great. For anyone who notices a noise when the lens is off and vertical - be not afraid, that is the floating IS element. I've been using this lens for awhile and I really love it. It is sharp and fast. Its light weight makes it perfect for handholding with my R5. I researched the comparison between the f4 and the f2.8 and could find little difference in image quality. I use my 24-105 f4 all the time and have rarely been penalized from lack of lens speed. The R5 handles low light conditions at high ISO really well so no real problem there. I find the same is true for this lens as well and when I considered price and weight difference it was a no brainer for me. I didn't need to add more weight to my camera pack as it's pretty heavy as it is. What I like most is that the zoom range is a perfect companion to my 100-500. I'm sure I'm not the lone ranger in that I struggled between getting this lens or the rather more expensive f/2.8 version. I know that the f/2.8 would be an amazing lens and produce shallower DOF and thus creamier bokeh. It would also be 1-stop better in low light. So, let me list the factors I weighed in my decision to purchase this lens and not the f/2.8 version:1. I shoot mainly landscapes. I do shoot occasional portraits of family and friends, but the ratio is about 9:1 in favor of landscapes, where having extremely shallow DOF isn't really necessary.2. On occasions when I do shoot portraits or people or objects and want a blurry back, I find that f/4 does a decent job. Does it blow out the background as much as f/2.8? On occasions when I do shoot portraits or people or objects and want a blurry back, I find that f/4 does a decent job. Does it blow out the background as much as f/2.8? No, but most of the time, I want to at least have the background identifiable. F4, especially at the 200mm range, can produce pretty nice bokeh, as see in some of my attached images. Besides, if I really need a brighter aperture, I have the RF 85 f/2 and the EF 50mm f/1.4 - which are both great in this regard.3. Weight and Size! I like to do a lot of hiking and backpacking, and it helps that this lens is considerably smaller and lighter than the f/2.8. I'm quite amazed by the quality of images I get from such a small, light lens at this focal length range. The size is comparable to my RF 24-105 f/4 and thus very convenient to carry around.4. Low light performance. I know that a 2.8 lens will let in more light and thus be better tan an f/4 in low light scenarios, but I considered the fact that my R5 is exceptionally good at higher ISOs. Thus, I calculated that, in events where I needed an extra stop, I could easily bump up the ISO 1 stop. In the event I had to shoot at an ISO that produced more noise than I'd like, well there are many programs that can use AI to greatly reduce noise while not impacting sharpness (Topaz, DXO and now even Lightroom).5. Price. Of course the elephant on the room is the price difference. Even if the f/2.8. I had to ask myself the honest question: Is one-stop better worth an additional $1100 giving what I mostly shoot? The answer, if I'm being honest, is a resounding NO. Now, if I were a wedding photographer who was making money, and they extra stop would produce a bit nicer background blur, then I might consider the f/2.8 version. By the way, with the money I saved buying this lens vice the f/2.8, I was able to buy a refurbished RF 85 f/2 and still had money left over! Conclusion: Unless I were a professional who really had a need for that extra stop of light, I would not buy the 2.8 version over this one. This is a wonderful lens that produced very good images and which meets all of my needs. Honestly, even of the 2.8 were only, say $500 more, I still would have preferred this lens, if for no other eason than for its amazing size and weight. I have had this lens for a few months now and have zero regrets.
I recently paired the RF70-200 with an EOS R to shoot an indoor concert. I was a bit concerned that I may have made the wrong choice with the f4 model in this combination. Nonetheless, I placed the order and received two days prior to hitting the road. Surprisingly, this lens exceeded my expectations! The 70-200 provided the right focal length to get my shots and the images were impressively sharp thanks to the built-in stabilization of the LENS (made all the difference using with the EOS R). Granted the lower light condition required me to increase my ISO, but shooting RAW helped compensate for adjustments in the final images. The weight of the RF vs. the EF model is a game changer, in my opinion. If it can perform in my less than desirable conditions, I'm anxious to shoot in daylight with it! And, will likely be upgrading to an R5 in the near future to get even more out of the lens.
I've been happily using the EF 70-200 f4 L IS for 11 years, so I decided to treat myself to it's RF replacement. Great idea! This is a fine lens, perfect for my needs. The price point is a lot nicer than the F2.8 version, so if you don't actually NEED that extra f-stop, save the $1000 and the extra pound of weight and get this lens.I've seen reviews that mention a minute, almost undetectable difference in sharpness, but in real world usage, there is nothing to it. Even at f4, its widest aperture, its dead on sharp. Stop down one or 2 stops and it just gets better. It's almost one pound lighter and nearly 2 inches shorter than the f2.8. Canon RF glass isn't cheap, but thankfully their more budget friendly options don't force you to sacrifice a ton. I've shot on the RF 70-200 f2.8 and now on the RF 70-200 f4. For my budget, I'll take the f4. Very similar image quality, smaller/lighter lens, significantly less expensive and with the R5C I can compensate for the loss of light with ISO without adding much noise. If you're in need of a telephoto but can't justify dropping $2,600+ on a lens, this is a really solid option. Could you get an EF to RF adapter and use an older EF 2.8, sure, but then you're fumbling around with an adapter, adding even more weight to your build and pushing that weight further from the body putting more stress on the mount.
First things first: This lens is too big for daily use with an APS-C sensor. With an effective 112-320mm range, I frequently found myself backed up and unable to take the candids and sweeping landscape shots that I wanted. After a few days with it I purchased its equivalent 24-105 sibling as a replacement with the intent to return this one. However, when you really need the reach of a telephoto lens, nothing else comes close. I've been shooting landscape detail shots from literal miles away, and the crispness is unbelievable. The long reach and wide aperture are even good enough for deep sky astrophotography, providing comparable results to an intermediate-level telescope. (The attached photos are massively compressed due to upload limitations, they are shot at ... MoreFirst things first: This lens is too big for daily use with an APS-C sensor. I haven't had any wildlife opportunities yet, but it would be a great lens for birding or other fast action shots.I definitely won't be daily driving this lens around my neighborhood, and I can't recommend it for that. But for niche interests it's so wonderful that I can't bear to part with it.
For years I've used a Canon 70-200 f2.8 IS lens on my Canon 5D Mk4. A very good lens but BIG and HEAVY. When I purchased my R5 about a year ago I used a mount adapter to use that lens on the R5. Still BIG and Heavy.I finally purchased this lens and I couldn't be happier. At f4 its at least as sharp as the old lens and at f5.6, which is where I usually shoot outdoors its noticeably sharper than the old lens at f5.6. Auto focus is quick and the combination of in-lens stabilization and in-body stabilization is just amazing. This is the lens I leave on my camera for most of my shooting. If I had to find one thing negative to say about this lens it would be that it is an external zoom lens as ... This is a minor issue and overshadowed by all of the positive attributes of this lens.Highly recommended!
