Canon have taken their world-renowned Tilt Shift design and taken it to another level. Not only have they improved on the already great optical quality of the 90mm Tilt Shift this directly replaces but they’ve enlarged the size of the control knobs to further improve usability. Creative control Tilt Shift lenses are an amazing piece of engineering and they can really make your photography stand out amongst the crowd. They can also save hours in post processing because they can correct perspectives before you take the photo. The Tilt function gives you control over the depth of field. It allows you to change the plane of focus such that it doesn’t need to be parallel to the sensor. This can produce photos with ‘in focus’ elements that you simply cannot produce with a normal lens. The Tilt function also lends itself to creative cinematic effects when shooting video. The Shift function allows you to control perspective. So, for example, you can eliminate converging lines in photos of architecture. Both Tilt and Shift can be moved and rotated independently. Macro opportunities This 90mm lens is naturally suited to portraiture and studio work but it also has the ability to fill the frame with small objects. Subjects can be represented on the sensor at up to half their life size which provides great macro opportunities, especially when you consider what the Tilt might enable you to do creatively with the thin depth of field. A couple of things to note This is one of Canon’s L series lenses so the build quality and manual focusing adjustments are of the finest quality. Due to the nature of Tilt Shift lenses, this is a manual focus lens, and it is not weather sealed. It is however, an amazing piece of engineering and is almost guaranteed to extend your creativity.
