I bought this a month ago and really wanted this to work!! After a lengthy cleaning process of scooping wet cement like clumps from the litter sifter areas, I decided to switch from my long time favorite litter of Fresh Step to Arm & Hammer Hardball. The liner bags just caused pockets of litter and clumps to be captured between the folds. Although the new litter improved things as this is a great litter, it still pooled under the sifter area. Between the bottom pan not fitting correctly so good litter is wasted and the urine that escapes between the sides, I’ve finally admitted defeat and am shopping for another style to transition my elderly cat to (who is not a fan of changes).

What I really like is that every time I sift, the bottom of the box gets cleaned.… You can’t do that with regular scooping, it’s just too hard. I like seeing the bottom of the box because I throw baking soda in on it with every cleaning, also, I look in from the top window and I don’t have to breathe in any of the dust. The opening is very high, but I just put a little box in front of it for my four month old kitten to climb on. At first, I didn’t like the handle set up, but it works; makes a miserable job a lot more doable. I’ve had about a month, so far so good, if it starts part falling apart, I guess I’ll write another review.

I love this litter box!
11 April 2023

This last time I went to buy a litter box, I looked at everything; having had so much experience with the low end stuff, I was willing to shell out big bucks for something that truly made my life better. I found out that even the computerized ones aren’t perfect, and are NOT worth the money from what I’ve seen. YouTube has a guy who seems to have spent a lot of his life evaluating and comparing the really high tech devices. I watched his hour-long (or so) video, and he has gotten really good information from all his effort. Then there are the ones that roll around…you tilt them on their side and roll the dirty sand into its bin…they are NOT the wonderful simple solution they pretend to be. I watched his hour-long (or so) video, and he has gotten really good information from all his effort. Then there are the ones that roll around…you tilt them on their side and roll the dirty sand into its bin…they are NOT the wonderful simple solution they pretend to be. So…SmartSift…I’ve read over reviews here, some from years ago, and wonder what people expect from a litter box. Maybe they should spend $800 on one and see how it could be. Or they could get proactive to iron out the bugs. After 6 months, I’m really happy with mine…I’m happy every time I pull the lever and dump all the nasty stuff into its holding bin. A word about dumping: go slowly when pulling the lever… give the ‘clean’ sand a chance to fall through the grate, otherwise everything goes to the bag. The truth about cat sand is that when you are emptying dirty sand, that has huge clumps of pee stuck to the bottom of the box, there are going to be issues; like the fact that those massive wet heaps simply will not separate and fall no matter how many times you yank that handle. I got over it. I keep my old hand sifter and I just scrape them off to fall into the bottom. I sprinkle a handful of baking soda around before letting the ‘clean’ sand back in. I lean over the top and look through the window so as not to breathe in dust. I also took the door flap off cause my kitten couldn’t move it. The real stink comes from the bottom bin…when changing liners I always shoot some Febreze there; it really works to cut down odors! About the liners…DON’T buy the CatIt liners that come with box, too much $$$. I found a giant box of SoPhresh generic liners with an elastic band around the top…these are brilliant! 40 count for $20…that’s really cheap, especially since you can just dump dirty contents into another trash can with cheap liners and empty that, wash the SoPhresh liner and it’s good for several more uses. Also, don’t get crazy putting in new sand, you’ll see through the grate where the cutoff for sand is, go beyond that and it’ll get dumped. From what I can tell, NO litter box is going to be totally automatic…I dump dirty sand 2 or 3 times a day, it only takes a minute, even replacing a little sand every time is quick. I have to remember I even have a litterbox sometimes! I hope all this chatter helps, I tried to think of all the issues.

I have now used this for 3 months. One month in my cat peed on my carpet, I went to check the litter box and everything looked good. Then again she peed the next day on the carpet... After further inspection, the lever came loose and the litter pan tilted just enough I didnt notice but blocked the door and my cat couldn't get in. Costing me $235 in carpet cleaning.I glued the handle into place and it worked for 1 month and came loose again. Glued it again and after another month it just stripped out and broke.Listen to the reviews unlike me, this is an amazing idea and I loved it when it worked. But the life of the unit is not worth the cost for how cheaply made and designed it is. They need to design the lever better!

So disappointing

I really wanted to love this product. I am pregnant and was trying to find an easier litter solution which won’t require me to handle litter as often. Sadly I feel like it wastes SO MUCH litter but it’s not that great at actually filtering clumps (they get stuck to the grid and won’t move). The liners seems to get in the way and make things even worse. When The bottom liner gets full, no easy way to take it out without spilling. I’m not understanding how so many people love this. Maybe I’m doing something wrong but I disassembled it and had my father-in-law assemble it and still same issue. Sadly, Petco changed their return policy so by the time I gave up on it, it was right past the return window. Probably the worst product I’ve bought from petco. Just got this and after an initial mishap putting it together improperly, which caused litter to be poured into the bottom tray when turning, it works like a dream! I have a few tips for those saying it's not working great for them:For corner pee-ers and those that don't cover their poo: It still worked well. I just had to turn the handle back and forth a few times to toss litter over the pee/poo or loosen the pee clump from the corner before it hits the grate. For those who are getting a spill of clean litter in the bottom tray: I got this at first, too. When putting the liner on, I assumed the bars were fitting back in the hinge mouth, but you really have to pop them in and hold them in place while you lower the grate down into the pan and over the side buttons that pop back up through the holes in the grate piece. That makes sure the grate piece is well-fitted so that litter doesn't spill when you turn it. Hope that helps!

Works good if used properly and slowly

Bern using this for about a week. It's good not perfect.it's a great concept but could be tweeked a bit.It does what it's supposed to do...however you have to be easy with the lever. Don't force anything. Take your time and do it slowly. Sometimes a clump or two will get stuck in which case I get my sifter and push them off. You may lose a bit of litter in tje process ad some falls down but for me it's ok because I always freshen with a bit of clean litter.Do not overfill or you will lose all the overfill. We have 5 cats and they all use it. I do have another standard litterbox as well but plan to get rid of that and get a 2nd of this one. IMO it's still better than scooping.I would recommend it IF you take it easy and play with it a bit until you figure out the best way to use it for you. I shake it back and forth a few times until it's all sifted. It's a bit high for a kitten so I have a little box as a step. stool...be creative.Remember not to force as its plastic not steel😉

This is my 2nd purchase. I now have 2 of these litter boxes. After trying many types including the very over priced electronic litter boxes this one is the best for the money. It's easy to sift the litter, and the box is super easy to clean. Just be sure not to over fill past the litter line or you will waste litter. I learned that the hard wayMost important my 6 kitty's love them. No more messy litter on the floor. Even my big tubby kitty fits inside with no issues.

So, Vesuvio(25lb male) plus the litter because I did not get lightweight litter may have been too much weight for the box and its mechanism. If it was too much weight, it very easily could have cause the bin to bow and cause slippage with the handle which has a dimond shape with a flat side and a square center hole extending from it as the bin has the recess verison of the same shape without the center hole or any bar that fits the center hole. ideally the handle can only attach to the bin one wat. If the handle slips out of the bin, the bin will sort of free rock and the handle, will not said bin, to sift it. Looking at the handle with as square center hole and the bin which seems to have a set of threading on the outside with the way it fits perfectly but has nothing to hold it. The design really almost feels unfinished like the designer had plans for a bolt, center pin, or an over lock piece and was told ahh you dont need that, but left the opening in the handle and the threading on the bin it feels like there should be just a scosh more. my spouse and I fixed it with silicone glue, we attached the handle permanently to the bin, we chose silicone because we felt likeit needed to be a little flexible. Now I wish I had three of these boxes,I also wish I had put it together so I realized it wasn't working correctly before I put it out fpr the cats and I didnt have to clean it before i fixed it.. I know it was expensive to have to modify, but we knew and discussed that possibility before we purchased, I have another tilt sift box a different brand which I also had to modify as the top wouls separate and its not nearly as easy to use . Listen, if your like me , litter boxes are the hardest thing to remember and even harder to do, but you really can't justify 300 no matter how much you want to for the one that flushes or the self cleaning box that actually has good long term rateing... its worth the money and the diy fix... I literally clean the box every time I walk by now. The lever is kinda fun once it works well, my very large cat has gotten quite old and he has troubles that old cats have, the box being raised is actually easy for him to get in and out of. SOME DOES N DON'T S.. DO use a light weight litter that clumps well. DO use liners in the under drawer (I never used them before this). DON'T over fill, use no more litter than can fit into the portion of the bin that you sift into, more litter than that and it will just drop into to drawer. DO rock the litter back and forth to even out after sifting and dropping. DO consider this box if you can troubleshoot shoot and have any ability or desire to modify. DON'T consider this box if you want things to arrive and work exactly as planned, you may be lucky and be one of the few it worked as it was supposed to, but if your not and you can't modify, you will hate it, I wish it wasn't the case but its true.
