I'm a relative newbie, so was looking for a good all-rounder telescope. The 6SE certainly fits the bill. It is large enough to get a good amount of light in, small enough to be easily portable, and the driven mount and star align are relatively simple to use. The one feature that is harder to use is the spotter scope, but as this was well flagged in reviews I was prepared for this when I purchased and used one of the online hacks to make it easier to set up. Thoroughly recommended. I should add that the customer service and delivery from Picstop was flawless.

Doesn't have an auto-off, so you burn $9.00 worth of batteries each time you forget to hit the off switch. The instruction manual does not match the product. There is a legal caveat acknowledging this, but the product is too complex and too expensive to have an incorrect and confusing instruction manual. It needs to be updated. The sighting device is a cheap red-dot scope from a kids Daisy air rifle, too cheap for a $700 telescope, and it doesn't have sufficient adjustment range to get the dot aligned, so you just have to get it as close as possible and then extrapolate in your mind to where the telescope is really pointing. And there is no glare guard to the sighting device, so the smallest amount of ambient light creates a reflection of the sighting device base ... MoreDoesn't have an auto-off, so you burn $9.00 worth of batteries each time you forget to hit the off switch. I find it bizzare that you must go through the alignment process each and every time you power up. The telescope would be infinitely more useful if you could align the telescope once, and not move it, and it would still be still aligned the next time. Yet the manufacture didn't invest a dime to save the alignment. Particularly bad since you can't leave the power on. Maybe an AC Adapter would fix that. I was originally very impressed by the alignment process-some really smart software engineers! After first successful alignment I said "find the moon" and it got real close, but the moon was just outside the view. With the cheapo viewfinder I didn't know which way to nudge the moon back in view. (if you can't find the moon, how will you ever find a distant star?) Then I said "find Uranus," which worked. Then I said "find the moon" again, and the telescope pointed 180 deg away from the moon. I'm not so impressed anymore with the software.

I haven't yet learned all the features of the GoTo computer, so take this review with a grain of salt. But I have manually looked at the Moon, Jupiter, Saturn, and Mars. I paired this OTA with a 2 diagonal, and the Hyperion Zoom Eyepiece. My Barlow lens hasn't come yet. I also have a PowerBank, the GPS unit and the Sirius Case. Of course, all the accessories are much more than the original scope! So far Jupiter is pretty cool- some banding visible, four moons appear as points. Saturn is also nice, with the Cassini Division just barely visible. Mars is disappointing- basically a whitish/yellow disk. Will have to work on that one. And the moon is amazing, of course. Hopefully I'll get out of the lights of Los Angeles soon to see everything in a much better light, so ... MoreI haven't yet learned all the features of the GoTo computer, so take this review with a grain of salt. Wow just Wow, I tried to save some Dollars over the 8 inch model and though I would regret getting the 6 Inch model over the 8 inch Model! NOPE Not One BIT, Mind you Im 66 yrs old and was looking for a lighter weight package with good performance! and to save some money also so i bought this and added some extra goodies with the money I saved! No Regrets Here. This thing is a real sweet spot! Easy to transport and take apart and setup and has real good optics! I just Love It and Think it will Last Last me years to come!
Great for beginning or intermediate users. Easy to break down and move about and setup. I have owned mostly Meade scopes and being the first celestron scope I was fairly impressed with the outcome. Views were sharp on distant stars and the moon looked extremely clear. Can take short exposure photos but most long time exposure photos would take more advanced and expensive equipment. I bought mine used but even new theyre a good bargain. I use an adapter for power and the cord could have been longer, but an extension allows more flexibility.
This is my first telescope in 20 years, I could not be happier with my purchase. As a beginner, I find this this telescope very user-friendly with absolutely astounding optics. The alignment process is very easy to accomplish. I recently purchased the Celestron SkyPortal Wifi module to remotely control the telescope using my computer or iPhone, and the added experience is awesome. I am using the StarryNight planetarium software that came with the scope and I also find it amazing. I've also been enjoying SkySafari, another great planetarium software. The only drawback I've experienced is the realization that the telescope optics need very slight collimation, likely because of the handling and shipment of the telescope.I love my Celestron NexStar 6SE. While the Nexstar 6SE may be considered a beginner’s scope, it is actually my second scope, pairing with a 17 year old 8” Meade LX90. I wanted something that was easier to transport and faster to set up. While I lost a couple of inches in aperture, I gained something much more likely to be used — in fact the new scope is coming along on our upcoming vacation.Out of the box, the scope was something. And first light met all my expectations. Fast to move and set up outside, relatively easy to align scope and finder, and the solar system alignment really worked! I aligned on Jupiter and it stayed n the viewfinder for a couple of hours as I ran through my eyepieces.High Point’s service was wonderful — I ordered late on a Saturday night and the scope was delivered on ... MoreWhile the Nexstar 6SE may be considered a beginner’s scope, it is actually my second scope, pairing with a 17 year old 8” Meade LX90. The red dot finder that comes with the scope is OK but I would have preferred an illuminated RACI and am investigating that (but this was not an issue with High Point). So far, so good, and I am energized again. Thank you High Point Scientific for a good price on a great product and fast free delivery.
This Telescope is one of the best values out there and offers the owner years of enjoyment with ease of use. I have previously owned 7 and 8 Scopes and this 6 telescope is a close rival to the larger light buckets. The best telescope is the one you will use the most often, and the convenience of set-up, and it's ability to properly-target (and center) sky-objects is a relaxing way to observe. As an aging amateur astronomer, I appreciate the light-weight set-up and tear-down. It's very portable with an added 12V compatible battery pack. The Skyportal WIFI module allows direct interface with the SkyPortal and the SkySafari Apps, allowing you to set up and control the scope through your smartphone or iPad. The Skyportal WIFI module allows you to bi-pass the Telescope's hand controller and allows your smart-phone or iPad to be able to communicates your position on the Earth and your current time to the Scope, aiding in the scope's ability to align the scope with the stars. This saves time setting up the scope before viewing. This investment offers the user, theirs friends, and their family many hours of night-time viewing on any available clear night, from anywhere you want to set it up. Purchase extra high-quality eyepieces to view objects at difference magnifications, and when possible, upgrade the Star Diagonal for brighter-sharper images. You will be amazed at the versatility and quality of the Celestron 6SE.
I've been very happy with my 6SE. Ordered it in Sept 20 and along with everything else, was a backordered a couple of months, receiving it in Nov 20. The additional eyepieces from OPT arrived about 6 weeks after the scope. The delay wasn't the fault of OPT, everyone was on backorder. And I received emails now and then with the status of my order.Like everything else, there is a learning curve but it's small, this is so easy to use. The hand controller and alignment is a little confusing at first but you quickly get the hang of it (reading instructions helps) and you're off. I love the way I can select what I want to see and it automatically goes there. It's in view and I just slightly center it. I love the way I can select what I want to see and it automatically goes there. It's in view and I just slightly center it. Like everything else, as soon as I got it began wishing I had bought the 8SE but as use the 6SE more and more, I believe I made the better choice with the smaller one. It's lighter and much easier to move in and out of the house. I can just get up and walk out with it all set up, put it down and start the alignment. The moon seems like you're right there. I got this at the perfect time to see Mars at opposition and Jupiter & Saturn at their closest in the sky for several years. It amazes me I can see the rings of Saturn 905 MILLION miles away, from my backyard. In addition, I've found Uranus (looks like a star), The Pleiades (unbelievable), The Andromeda galaxy (a light smudge in the sky). Orion's Nebula (like thin smoke) and several nebulas and double stars. The negatives - the finder scope is a toy at best. Celestron should be ashamed to put that on their scopes. Plan on replacing it right away. Once I added the Orion 9x50 finder scope my enjoyment factor shot up 100%. The added eyepieces OPT included with this package are ok, but other than the moon filter, I haven't used them. The 25mm one the comes with the scope is the perfect one. I also bought a Orion Planetary 9mm eyepiece and is what I consider essential after the 25mm. You'll also need a power supply (power pack works), 8 AA batteries will get expensive.I think you can tell I'm very pleased with my 6SE and given the chose, would buy it again as well as recommend this to anyone starting off.
