Bought this drive for my wife. I am personally a SanDisk guy but wanted to give Crucial a shot. Transfering my son’s soccer game shot in 4K around 25GBs storage took about 30 seconds from my SanDisk to this drive. Going from the memory card to this drive takes about 2 minutes, and going straight from my 2021 IMAC about 1 minute. People fail to realize that transfer speeds depends on the capability of your other devices. I am coming real close to buying the 4TB version of this drive because i am highly impressed. The price is is almost half of SanDisk. SanDisk better come down off those prices because Crucial is offering a similar product at a cheaper price, and the quality is about the same. FYI, this drive is already formatted for MAC users.

I compulsively collect images, music, and movies like a madman without any self control, and after my 1tb portable SanDisk SSD decided after a month and a half to completely die, down to and including the actual m.2 inside the casing, I decided to try out the X8. And I'm glad I did; this thing is an absolute workhorse; the casing, being only rubberized on the top and bottom, gives the drive great thermals under stress, it's a super benign shape so you can fit it just about anywhere, performance is fantastic, and it's held up for four months straight without a single issue; no sector issues, no weird slowdown, no failure to be recognized from any computer, nothing. It just straight up works, and in a product category where others will do anything from die at random ... I’ve only owned this for a relatively short time. But, I’ve had an opportunity to copy pictures and videos to and from a couple of different computers using my new Crucial backup drive. It’s plenty fast. Furthermore, I did some “Windows searches.” They, too, were quick! I’m familiar with the quality of Crucial products; but, I jumped at this when this 2 TB version was priced at just slightly more than 1 TB products.

I've been using an external SSD drive as my main macOS boot drive on my 2018 Mac mini for a few years now. Unfortunately a few weeks ago, the drive I had been using failed (Google "Samsung T7 leaking" - it's crazy!). I needed a replacement ASAP and there was no way I was going to give Samsung any more of my business. I've always been a fan of Crucial's memory products and had never heard anything bad about their SSDs so I decided to give them a shot. Luckily the 2TB Crucial X8 happened to be on sale for a ridiculously low price and Best Buy had it delivered the very next day! While the specs are similar to the Samsung T7 drive it replaced, I am finding that the transfer speeds on the Crucial X8 are slightly faster. Overall, I am very happy with this purchase.
This drive does what it says. I do get the advertised speeds when this device was connected to my computer USB C to USB C Super Speeds port. I bought this drive for my PS5. It comes with an adapter to make one of the ends USB C to USB A. When I connected it to the back of my PS5 it didn't want to format the drive for some reason. But the drive did work on my PC with the adapter. Once I formatted the drive on my PC. I was actually able to use it on my PS5 with the adapter in the back of the console. Thought that was weird. I did not test the speeds with the adapter on. From googling it seems that it should be able to do it if you put the device in a Super Speed USB port on your PC. According to Sony/Playstation all USB ports are Super Speed. https://www.playstation.com/en-us/support/hardware/ps5-extended-storage/ so technically the adapter should work just fine to get advertised speeds with the device. But for whatever reason Sony recommends the user to use the USB C Super Speed port on the front of the PS5 for external hard drives. You can read this here: https://www.playstation.com/en-us/support/hardware/ps5-usb-ports-guide/ when you click on the USB storage drop down. ("USB storage should be connected to a Superspeed USB port. It is recommended that you connect PS5 extended storage to the USB Type-C port on the front of your PS5 console. The USB Type-A ports on the back of your PS5 console can also support extended storage. USB storage is not compatible with the USB Type-A port on the front of a PS5 console.") Because of that I didn't go into more testing as to if the device does 1000MB/s with the adapter on. But once again, if you google my understanding is that it should. The cable included is small, I wish it was bigger. That is why this review got a 4 out of 5. I hate to see my devices just like hanging like in the picture because the cable is small. Of course, I can just place my PS5 horizontal, but that is something I do not want to do. Crucial didn't have to be so cheap on the cable size. TLDR: This device comes with an adapter to make the cable USB C to USB A. Take this device off, and connect it to the front of your PS5.
I really like this storage drive--it's small, so it doesn't take up valuable desk space; it's lightweight, so it's easy to move and carry around; it's pretty quick. I've been using it for a few months with no problems. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is that there are no other types of cables, so it's limited to 1G maximum. A Thunderbolt 4 should have been included; at the least, I think it should have been sold with a few adapters to make it compatible with different ports, as Apple has made it difficult and expensive to use ancillaries. And, as part 2 of the same issue, the cable should have been longer. I still like the unit and will buy more when the price comes down.
Pros: I bought two and they've rejuvenated my 2017 iMac no end. Using only its internal 1GB hard drive up to around 60-70% capacity, it had all but run to a halt. I bought two of these, installed Monterey on one and assigned to other as a data disk, keeping as much of the user storage separate from the OS storage as possible. It's only been a month or so, so it's not a true and tested long term solution, but I'm very happy with the results so far. Cons: They run pretty hot, but I haven't noted any issues as a result. No notable slowdown, no China syndrome. I'm ok with it. I haven't measured actual transfer speed versus promised, I'm gauging this purely on what went before and what's happened since, and it's a game changer for me. There's aren't any operating LEDs. ... Personally I find operating LEDs reassuring.
Had to reformat (to ext4) to get it to work with an outdated Linux kernel. Even with newer software, you should reformat for a more robust file system. Supposedly some file systems are slightly faster, but I think the main advantage is journaling? Due to using USB 2, I only get a fraction of the maximum speed, but that isn't an important issue. The drive sometimes gets hot after being plugged in for a while, which I think is due to the system using the wrong USB state or something. I also sometimes see 1) an external USB hard drive that starts, and then keeps spinning after being unmounted, 2) a USB wireless adapter that gets hot from use, 3) a cell phone battery that was probably damaged by too much current from USB. I saw someone else say that their SSD (a different model) got hot under Windows, but not under Linux, so it isn't an issue with this drive or a particular OS but just something to watch out for. Due to the drive getting hot, I try to unplug it when not in use. With USB 2 being slower, and some kind of caching taking place, I have to be careful not to unplug it too early. Even if a program (typically command-line 'mv', 'cp' or 'rsync') says it's finished copying, THE DRIVE HAS NOT FINISHED. Even if I right-click the drive's icon and select Stop or "Safely remove drive", the drive's icon disappears almost immediately but THE DRIVE HAS NOT FINISHED WRITING. This might be due to ext4 using delayed writes or whatever, but I think it is actually the drive caching the writes or the operating system lying to the application. I have to use command-line 'sync' to make sure that writing has finished, and after writing 1GB of files that can take 30 seconds to complete (again, because USB 2 is slower). SMART information doesn't work for me with this drive, and the system-level function that helps the drive free up unused space doesn't work, but that might just be from using an older kernel. Make sure you get it to work if you do a lot of work with the drive, with deleting and modifying files. The drive originally also had a relatively small Windows recovery partition or something. After researching it, I deleted it, but it might be useful to Windows users.
I purchased the 2TB of this X8 SSD and it is absolutely the best SSD I got, I'm happy with the purchase. It's very fast and very portable. It's smaller than the palm of your hand. It looks really cute 😊 the way crucial has redesigned this SSD. I love it very much. It works very well with any Windows 10 or higher Computers and or Android. JUST AN ADVICE: If you are using a hub for any tablets, then make sure it's a self powered hub to run a either 1TB or 2TB SSD or else your tablet battery will run out of juice very fast. The only downside is that the USB-C Cable it came with, Crucial could have at least given a 1.5ft or even a 2ft high quality USB-C cable with it for universal placement for every different kind of usage. Overall, I would highly recommend this X8 ... MoreI purchased the 2TB of this X8 SSD and it is absolutely the best SSD I got, I'm happy with the purchase. It's very fast and very portable. I use this for short term backups when I'm reinstalling an operating system or two or three on my desktop. Yes, I do run Windows 11, 10, XP, 98 and 3.1 but also several flavors of Linux. When my tinkering breaks something and I have to reinstall the OS, or I want to upgrade to the latest version this is the drive I want with the most recent copies of everything. Takes just a few minutes to transfer nearly 1tb of data. USB-c is the chokepoint. You'll only see transfers as fast as your computer is capable.
