I got this reel before Daiwa stops making them in preference to their BG-MQ. I know there are pros to the MQ series but I am old school and like to be able to service my own reel. This reel is fully serviceable when it needs being cleaned and re-lubed. I also like this reel over Shimanos that have a bearing in their line roller. I'll take a bushing that can be easily cleaned and lubed over a bearing that fails with the slightest bit of sand which is ever-present on the beach. I was spooled twice fishing for speckled trout when a cow-nosed ray decided to get foul hooked. Drag, bail, and reel are amazing even after pulling off over 200 yards each time. Love Daiwas!

I bought two BG MG 18000 for a two week surf fishing trip in Mexico May 2022. Used them everyday with fresh water rinse nightly. Final cleaning after the trip and found both had corroded to the point where you can’t crank the reels. The chamber doesn’t have a strong seal and the results are I now have two paper weights. I brought my Shimano Saragosa on the same trip and that reel is just fine as if new. The BGs are less costly but require much more comprehensive maintenance than the Shimano reels.

I purchased this reel to put on my Tsunami Trophy II 8 foot surf rod as I leave this rod in my vehicle at all times in case I want to make a few cast after or before work. It is very smooth as every review I read stated. I lined it with 30Lb. Power Pro and its a great reel for the money. I rinse after every use and have had 0 issues. Only thing I didn't like was the pingy drag noise so I removed the drag clicker now its perfect...

I have reels that cover trout to tuna made by Van Staal on down. These reels epitomize the phrase bang for the buck. They are very good quality, cast well, have negligible slop and last season after season without signs of corrosion or wear. I have a pair of 3000’s, 5500’s and 6500’s all used in the surf or offshore. Highly recommended because they just do what you expect for the money.
First day of owning this reel, It felt a little rough but figured it would smooth itself out. after another two days of light fishing and 2 Saugeye under 20 inches, it feels slightly worse than the reel I was trying to replace. Is not smooth on retrieval and the roughness has itself worsened. I am planning to return this real. I had high hopes for it being priced the way it was and I am honestly extremely disappointed. The gears itself feel like they are beginning to fall apart internally.
I opted for the Daiwa BG reel to replace an older Quantum Energy PT30. i got the BG 2500 size. It is just a tad bit smaller than the Quantum but a heck of a lot lighter. I saw some reviews about the bail not being thick enough or doesn’t click loud. I’m not finding that at all. I kind of like the lighter size bail, however I am only throwing in freshwater river lakes and streams. The reel is super smooth with no wobble reeling. I am able to retrieve a lot faster than the old Quantum as well. Overall, I feel the the Daiwa is a slight step above the Quantum Energy. They are mostly the same with the exception on weight, retrieve, and body material. The reel hold the same type of line. 6,8,and 10 lb mono BUT you can put more line on the Daiwa reel than the Quantum. I like that the Daiwa doesn’t feel as “ beefy” as the Quantum for the same type of line on the spool. Dicks will throw out out a $20 off coupon for orders of $100 so I jumped on their deal along with their free shipping and I got the reel super fast fast in 2 days!! This is better than amazon if you don’t have Prime!!Dicks made it easy for me me to make up my mind on the Daiwa since I was going to get the Pflueger President in the same size, and low and behold that same day I get the $20 off coupon in the mail!! Thank you Dicks for your great timing and the great shipping service for free. I will definitely look into getting a new rod with them soon
I bought a 3000 over 3 years ago and shortly after that bought a 2500. I’ve caught everything under the sun on them from dinky croakers in the surf to 25” stripers with plenty of 20+ inch trout and upper slot redfish in between. The biggest thing I like about this reel is the durability. I’ve owned several shimanos in the same price range and none of them have lasted me as long as these bgs. The drag adjustment is up there with reels 200$ above its class. I’ve dunked it in saltwater on a few occasions and just made sure to take the spool off when rinsing it off and had no issues. All around great reel. 2500 pairs well with my fenwick hmg medium light and 3000 does great on my fenwick hmg medium. I’ve swapped with a friends Penn battle which fits in the same class ... MoreI bought a 3000 over 3 years ago and shortly after that bought a 2500.
