Awful machine

originally posted on myer.com.au

Bought about 3 weeks ago and very disappointed in my purchase. Really hard to make a nice cup of coffee consistently. Needs a lot of thorough deep cleaning way more often than a home machine should. Steaming isn’t great. You basically need to buy a bunch of accessories to mod the machine to make it work better, as per reviews. Contacted Delonghi for support and no answer. Should have done more homework. Go with a different company and/or spend a bit more. Just avoid this machine. Wouldn’t even be worth $100

I was tossing up between this one and the Swan retro machine, I'm so glad I chose this one (I don't know about the Swan one, it may be just as good!).This machine is compact, perfect for our small kitchen bench space. It heats up really fast, including the milk steamer. Easy enough to set up the defaults. It's a pity that I can choose continuous pour until I turn it off (if I can, please let me know!), but I was able to choose the temperature which was good. The grip was quite tight at first, but that has eased up over the last month. All in all, a very good little machine.Note that you can remove the top drip tray and there is a second drip tray underneath that will fit a mug, the top one won't.

Really good coffee machine. Simple, but not so simple that you don't have input into how you make your coffee. Excellent size with a deceptively large water tank. A little tricky to undo the filter arm sometimes as there is nothing on the machine to grab onto to gain purchase, but that's minor. Milk frother works well too, certainly good enough for the odd capuccino I make, I'm more espresso and long black. The machine looks pretty cool too and you can get a mug under it if you so desire.

Great price - tricky to use
1 February 2022

I brought this in the January sales as I wanted barista style coffee in my home. I am a barista. The machine is neat, small and looks great on the countertop. Makes good hot milk although the nozzle isn't that flexible - but it serves a purpose. I like the cup warmer on the top, although to get maximum use from it, you need to have it on for a fair while before the cups get hot at all. I had an initial problem, I couldn't get the nozzle to screw fit into the head on the first few attempts/hours, after searching youtube to see whether anyone else had any issues with this, I solved my own problem and took some cooking oil and wiped it round the outside edge of the head and found that this lubricated it so it was easy to insert and swivel the handle into position. ... MoreI brought this in the January sales as I wanted barista style coffee in my home. Saying that, the machine is so light, so the resistance of getting the head and handle into the closed position is against you and is a bit of a struggle - I have to hold/hug the machine in one hand and hold the handle in the other to be able to close the product to work. Its such a design flaw. There are no sticky pads on the feet and it needs a heavier base. Holding it at the top sometimes means accidentally pressing the buttons. If I could be bothered to send it back, I would. I think that I must have a dodgy machine as I couldn't see any other reviews with the same issues as I have.

I think the Delonghi EC685 is a good expresso machine
21 April 2021

I researched expresso machines for the budget minded/ starter person, and this one appears in most best buy reviews. I'm very happy with it, particularly at half the price of a new machine as mine is second hand/ used machine. The condition is good and it performs as expected and I'm getting a decent home made expresso. I like that its slim and doesn't take up much space. It also is well designed and I my opinion looks good. Mine is white. I no longer have pod guilt and have access to wide range of coffee beans. Its clear you need to invest in a decent grinder. I went for a new DeLonghi K79, as it was only 10/20 more than used ones on ebay, which to my mind are being bought at too high cost (75% new cost!). If I stick with honing barista skills as a hobby, I could see myself potentially upgrading to higher cost machine which seem to enable ace brews, like an entry level Sage. But I'm quite happy with results from this Ec685 for now

Like a thin slice of a big coffee machine
30 August 2021

Was looking to save space in my kitchen but still wanted quality coffee. I spent several months looking for a machine that wouldn't take up a lot of room with the option to use ground coffee and pods, and eventually bought this one. At just 12cm wide not including the milk-frother, it does the job perfectly. The machine delivers quickly, using either a 1 cup, 2 cup or pod filter depending on your preference, into one or two cups below the filter. For a large coffee, use the 2 cup filter, fill with good ground coffee to almost full, tamp using the supplied tamper and use the 2 cup button. You can hold down the button for a few seconds to deliver water until the desired level and release, the machine will then remember this amount each subsequent time. There is a 1 litre reservoir, fill in-place or remove to fill up at the sink. The electrical lead is quite long, about 1 metre, and cannot be stowed underneath. There is a cup-warmer on the the top, but filling your cup with some hot water and rinsing is enough if you like it really hot. I haven't used the milk-frother, I prefer to use cream in my coffee, plus it needs a lot of cleaning. There's some descaler included in the box. Overall, extremely pleased with the function of the machine and the resulting coffee output.

I’m really happy with it. In fact I now like using it more than my big machine. I researched many reviews beforehand and understood there were some considerations that could be improved with a couple of minor adjustments - such as turning the water heat to high and buying a bottomless filter basket if you want to grind your own espresso coffee. The pressurized baskets that come with the machine are fine for courser grounds, pre-ground coffee and pods. Many people seem to have had trouble with getting good cappuccino froth - the bubbles are too big and unstable but I have since found that is more about technique, getting the milk to swirl rapidly in the jug and using whole milk or oat milk for non-dairy drinkers. Many people seem to have had trouble with getting good cappuccino froth - the bubbles are too big and unstable but I have since found that is more about technique, getting the milk to swirl rapidly in the jug and using whole milk or oat milk for non-dairy drinkers. I recommend you use filtered water and remember to flush out the steam wand after every use too. I made a small modification inside the steaming wand to reduce the size of the bubbles and I now get perfectly smooth silky froth. Some people take the metal sleeve off instead but it is not necessary to solve the problem. The machine is light so you do have to hold it when adding the filter basket, but honestly, for this price, these are minor things to tweak. There are various other adjustments that can be made re programing the machine but I have been happy with factory settings on those apart from heat which is easy to reprogram. The main thing is - this machine takes up no space, is easy to use and it makes great coffee from ristrettos to cafe lattes with some practice, good quality coffee and some youTube research on how to use the machine.

Pros: I love the design and how that coffee machine works. Very easy to use.Cons: At the beginning I was confused because I was following the instructions and marks on the filter cups which is part of portafilter. Unfortunately the spoon is bigger and you can not add two spoons of coffee powder by using the big filter cup if you are following the sign on it. If you grind your coffee, it doesn't have to be very fine - I believe the pump is strong enough to compress the coffe and bring out its aroma with a nice foam. Thank you.

UNBELIEVABLE - LEAKING PRODUCT
27 February 2023

I’m so frustrated. I originally had the dehlonghi espresso + coffee maker that had a 1 year warranty. A few blew and they didn’t have my unit in stock anymore, so they sent me this automatic espresso machine. I was happy, even thought customer service was very unorganized and it took weeks to replace. I finally get it here, fill the tank, insert it, and BAM…. Water all over my counter. I unscrew the bottom and find there’s water leaking from the part of the unit that is unreachable unless you take the entire thing apart. I spent hundreds of dollars on these machines, only for both of them to fail in less than a year. I’ll be reaching out to customer service again, but I’m hesitant to even receive another machine. I’m beyond frustrated, and will likely never purchase ... MoreI’m so frustrated. I originally had the dehlonghi espresso + coffee maker that had a 1 year warranty.
