First, this sounds far and above what my previous receiver sounded like. Second, it is missing a few options from the previous receiver that I really liked. When you send it DTS HD-Master Audio stereo...this receiver only allows you to play the sound in either direct or stereo format, instead of all channel stereo. I don't like this. I also don't like that this receiver doesn't allow you to remove individual FM radio presets. It only lets you cover the preset up with another station. Not cool.Another bad thing is that the piddly little wire antenna they give you is just useless. It's a lot smaller than the other receiver that I had, and a lot lighter, so that's good. It's a lot easier to move around.

I previously had an Onkyo receiver that came with a speaker bundle. It was a basic, entry level receiver like this Denon one, but was now 9 years old. It was working as it should.I noticed a problem as I started to use services like Netflix and HBO Now. I would have to turn the receiver way up to hear, so high (near max) that it would cause the receiver to trip. I was running through a Roku through the TV and using the optical audio out from the TV to run to the receiver. The DD+ signal could not be passed through the tv, so the tv was converting it to a weaker signal. That was causing me to have to turn it up to compensate. Changing the Netflix output to stereo didn't seem to help much, and even then I wouldn't be able to make use of my surround sound setup. ... MoreI previously had an Onkyo receiver that came with a speaker bundle. Changing the Netflix output to stereo didn't seem to help much, and even then I wouldn't be able to make use of my surround sound setup. Newer TVs shouldn't have this problem, but this one is 6 years old. There was no other way to get video to the tv and audio to the receiver (with surround sound) since my Onkyo receiver only had HDMI pass through capability. It couldn't extract audio from the HDMI input, again newer ones do this.So if anyone has such a problem, this Denon receiver does the trick. I run the Roku directly into the receiver and run HDMI out to the TV. It extracts audio (all normal surround formats you might have these days (DD, DD+, DTS) from inputs and sends the signal then out to the TV.I considered the newest Onkyo receiver at this price point, but decided against because of the horrible on unit display which was ugly and almost illegible. The Denon has a clear on unit display and good aesthetics.I enjoy the on screen display feature, which I didn't have before but I am sure is standard on receivers now. My preexisting Onkyo 6 ohm speakers and sub sound great with this system. Surround setup was easy. The only thing I would change is the volume control. This has been mentioned previously I think. When using the remote, it is very difficult to change the volume efficiently. It changes the volume too slow or way too fast. This is really just an annoyance, not a major problem.I highly recommend for an entry level receiver. I hope this helps anyone in the same boat as I had to do a bit of research to figure out my problem.

[Rewarded Review] Flexible and Sounds Great
16 March 2018

We connected the AVR to existing Samsung TV, Verizon Fios Box, DVD/VCR box, CD Player, 3 speakers and subwoofer, and more. Great sound all around. The pass-thru option for when the box is off works great - meaning we get sound/video on the TV even with the AVR box is off. Devices connected directly to TV also playback thru AVR as desired. Bluetooth for playing our Spotify songs works great (though we wish it would remember more than one paired device for faster connecting). Auto setup for speakers was spot-on. Comes with FM/AM antennas, which worked well, but navigating directly to favorite stations is a bit cumbersome. Remote works great. Setup options are very flexible and intuitive, and online manual is very detailed. Denon customer service is outstanding. [Rewarded Review] Good entry level AV Receiver
23 January 2018

I just bought this AV Receiver to replace my 10 years old Onkyo for the kids game room. We also upgraded to a 4K TV and my old AV Receiver was not handling very well the new TV and it was definitively not 4K ready. The setup was pretty easy and the microphone is definitively a plus when you want to make your speakers are calibrated correctly. Also I really like you are able to do all the setup directly on the TV with menus. This AV Receiver has a lot of receiver and Bluetooth is always a plus (I did not try it yet). Regarding the speaker wire connection I am not a fan , you cannot use the banana plugs with this AV (most of the entry level AV receiver have the same connection). But that was not a deal breaker and the price was right

[Rewarded Review] Good, but often get what you pay for
29 April 2018

The unit was on sale and feature wise compared very favorably with other similar and higher end products. Installed, the system worked pretty well. Controls seemed easy enough for those familiar with systems and the auto balancing process seemed OK. The unit is tall. Good for heat dispersal but be careful if you don’t have much vertical shelf space. No cabling other than cheap FM and AM antennae is included, so be sure you have your own speaker cabling and input line from your connected devices. Worst issue was sound volume. Set up to a Bose speaker system (passive subwoofer) and had to turn sound up to the 60’s (!!!) to be heard! Maybe it was the subwoofer pass through but was never able to resolve this. It was a bargain system that met most needs.

I got a new 4K TV, so I decided to update my entire setup. I wanted 5 hdmi ports on my receiver, and this was a good option for the money. One of the negative points on it, is that I can't rename the hdmi ports, something that I could do in the Yamaha receiver that this one replaced. That is not a reason to loose a star, the missing star is for the bad quality of customer support received by Denon.I was trying to enable HDR for Apple TV though the receiver, after I was able to do so when connecting my Sony TV directly to the Apple TV. 5 October 2018

I wanna preface this by saying... This system has been smooth. I've run it with Klipsch subwoofers and speakers. The audio is amazing, and my home theater absolutely pulls you into the movies. That being said...I'm on my third receiver in the span of a year. It's on it's own protected APC in a house that is 18 months old (so new wiring). It sits in an open sided tower on it's own shelf (no air flow problems) with projectors, gaming systems and several other electronics that do not have issues.I know it's possible to have had a few flukes. And again, the sound was really great. But it's tough to recommend when I owned a pioneer for 10 years, but I can't get this one to last 6 months.
