All around great for hiking

I looked around for a while to get a bag that had everything I was looking for. I injured my lower back and have disc issues, so I needed something more structured than the packs I usually hike with. I'm 6' tall and slender build, (slightly long torso). I don't do multi-day backpacking adventures. I usually keep it under 12 miles depending on the difficulty and do in and out day hikes. I wanted decent capacity and comfort. I was narrowing it down to Futura Pro 40, a Gregory Zulu 40 and the Osprey Stratos 36. In all honesty, I'm sure all three of these packs would be good for what I needed. It really came down to a few simple features. Pockets, included raincover, good suspension and good reviews. It may sound a little strange to say I really just wanted side bellows ... MoreI looked around for a while to get a bag that had everything I was looking for. It may sound a little strange to say I really just wanted side bellows pockets, but it is really what it came down to. I can't say exactly why, but I think they are just handy to have and this is the one that had them. I should state that I mostly go hiking/mushroom hunting and always wind up needing more space than I have/adding weight as I go. Extra pockets and different compartments are important for my purposes. After putting a few miles on relatively mild trails, I found it well balanced and comfortable. I did have a little issue getting the hip belt to sit comfortably, but I am still getting used to these back issues and comfortable ways to walk and carry. I put about 10 lbs in various pockets just to add some weight and to test accessibility and had no noticeable issues. The shape of the pack seemed to correct my posture as well, which was a nice surprise. The venting of the back worked well. I wore a lot of layers to test it, and everything was sweaty and gross except for my mid back. I was a little skeptical of this system in fear of weight being further away from my body, but I don't think it will ever be an issue. My Fall hikes tend to have heavier hauls of mushrooms so I will update it if 30+ lbs of maiitake becomes a problem. But, it is comfy, I like the pockets (side bellows and the sleeping bag compartment that will unzipper to maximize main compartment space), i'm less sweaty, fabric seems durable, and it really just looks good. What I would ideally have wanted to add/change...Straps on the bottom. Can't really see the harm of adding these, but not a deal breaker. Also, I've gotten spoiled with integrated whistles in the sternum strap. Realized this didn't have one, so I had to buy a whistle to tie to the pack. Once again, not a huge issue.Overall, I'm happy with this pack, and my lower back had no issues carrying some weight for a few miles which was my biggest concern. So far so good.

I bought this as my one and only suitcase, hiking pack, attaché, pillow, and best friend, for a trip to a jungle-y area of Costa Rica. After my trip I must say, it is fabulous at all of those tasks (with the exception being the best friend bit because it is as you are likely aware, not alive.)The bag carries all of the clothes I intended to bring for a 6 day trip to a hot place very well. I still had room for some seashells and a small spider monkey I caught. Instantly, the bag was transformed to the best friend I always wanted it to be!But seriously, this pack is the perfect fit between a gear hauler and a day pack. It is just big enough for multiple days with gear, food, and water and not so big that you hang on every vine you encounter. The strap system is comfortable for days of carry and the trail Pro back system delivers generous airflow in a hot jungle. With the internal cinch system you don't have 20 flappy straps hanging out all over the bag which is a huge annoyance of mine and should be one for you too cause floppy flappy straps are annoying!I like the waist straps on the pro version of this bag way better than the regular trail editions as they are way more sturdy here and carry and distribute the load more evenly. The non pro edition waist straps are very floppy and serve as more of a belt than a load distributor. This is not too big of a deal in a bag that only carries 30L or so but after a few days you will appreciate the difference! In all This bag is the b0mb for air travel!! Just don't say that in an airport…Another + for this bag is the fact that it sits low and not always touching your head. I can see the advantage of that in climbing but it is also great in the jungle where you are constantly looking up into the canopy. Much like the floppy flappy straps I just cant stand when my bag is constantly brushing my ears or hair. In writing this review I am realizing that I have a bunch of issues..I guess what I am saying is that if you are a person with a bunch of gear related baggage this pack will lay low and not constantly annoy you. Unless you put a spider monkey in it and forget to feed him. In which case all bets are off.

Since the Annapurna is an accommodated hike, I chose the 38lt pack after returning the Osprey Kyte 36 due to a stiff shoulder. At the store and on subsequent day hikes, the pack performed reasonably well. The features ticked all the boxes: top and bottom compartments, secure lid section, accessible bladder, good back and hip support, zippered pockets on the belt, compression straps, hiking pole straps and a rain cover. Plus is looked great on the trail, I got lots of compliments for the cute colour and compact look. However, the performance of the bag while on the hike was completely different. I found that the maximum load that the design can comfortably carry is around 15-16kg. Anything more and it became excruciating on the body. There is also a flaw with the load lifters (stabiliser straps) that they are positioned too low on the top of the back or too high on the shoulder strap. The load lifters defaulted to the maximum pull with no change functionality/comfort. If you loosened the load lifters, the curved shape of the pack which allows for airflow on your back, hindered the pack from shifting back, in essence making the load lifters ineffective. This was my biggest gripe about this otherwise amazing pack. My recommendation is if you plan to use it for an overseas multiday hike, to take it on a local multiday test hike in full gear gear first.PRO: exceptional build, quality and features, very comfortable for lighter loads, curved mesh back helps with cooling and dryingCONS: rubbish load lifters, side pocket for drink bottle is too tight if pack is full, curved interior may annoy some

Generally a very good Deuter pack
30 June 2021

I've owned 3 other Deuter backpacks: a Guide 42, a Futura 36 and an Aircontact 65+10. I was looking a slightly larger pack for more remote day hikes or for occasional volunteer mountain ranger/rescue use duties. This pack is a good value in general. Maybe not as durable as my winter go-to Deuter Guide pack, but certainly more spacious with overflow space. Easy to throw in a wool sweater along with rain gear, a splint kit or a even small O2 bottle, regulator for medical response.Minor gripes: only a left side hydration hose port, less durable materials. Otherwise a great pack and value.

Always impressed how Deuter thinks of the extras. I like the outside stretch pocket for shoes or jacket. Pack is roomy and accessible without opening top. Good design! Comfy fit, carries smoothly. Durable. So far I am very impressed!

Great pack overall but has a few issues
22 April 2022

I really liked how many different features this pack has. I loved all the external straps for attaching gear. I wasn’t a huge fan of how the front stretch pocket didn’t have a snap or buckle closure but I’m sure it would still keep gear in. The material was good quality and I liked the colors. My two main issues were the torso and hip strap lengths. The torso was too short for me and the hip straps sat really far back on my hips, the padded parts didn’t come all the way around so my hip bones were jutting into the unpadded strap. I also felt the curve of the back panel was too extreme. The trampoline back is a nice feature but it causes the pack to curve so much it feels like it compromises how much space is actually in the main compartment of the pack. I couldn’t even reach my arm straight to the bottom without the curved back getting in the way. I ended up returning it due to the poor fit but it would definitely make a great pack for someone more petite.

Heavy Hiker
22 July 2022

I bought this pack for long days where I carry lots of gear. I love how comfy the back panel is, while its not like a trampoline, it definitely vents a bit of hot air out. Totally worth it for the load carrying capability. I love the zippered side pocket too! So handy for a smaller bladder.

My absolute favourite backpack
8 December 2022

I've tried over a dozen packs looking for just the right one. From Osprey to Mystery and everything in between. This one has perfect size hip belt pockets, it opens down the sides and has a great bucket lid. The water bottle and stash pocket are flexible and don't interfere with the interior. I've taken this on 3 hikes now and the size is exactly what I need. Deuter makes great bags and I appreciate the good zippers and buckles. Everything functions well even in -24 weather.

Perfect pack for my 10 day Kumano Kodo trek. Size fitted carry on baggage. Was super comfortable. Water bladder section perfect. Trekking pole holder easy to use. Pockets all in right places. Easily adjusted.

Pockets!

I originally bought an Osprey of equivalent size. Didn't love it. The suspension system threw me off balance more than once. What I really didn't like about it was the wat it was organized. Enter the Deuter Train Pro 36. Love it!. Cleverly designed. Plenty of pockets, strong zippers and I love their version of mesh straps that provide cooling. It is also very comfortable. I like the setup for the hydration pack. The main pocket cleverly has a zipper that allows you to get at the bottom of the pack without rooting through everything. Don't get me wrong, Osprey is a great name and a lot of hikers use their packs. I just didn't like their pack but love the Deuter.
