Absolutely top notch impact driver. I had the batteries already so it was a no-brainer, but this tool is hard to beat, and the price just now (low because it's technically last gen) is really very reasonable. I held off with the impact driver for ages because I have a really decent drill, but there is just no competition. Perhaps not a must, but a huge help when it comes to any timber framing job, probably making its value back in only a handful of stud walls or similar. Just so quick and easy to get screws in (and out, if you get it wrong!)

Already have a dewalt drill so I was wondering if I really needed to buy an impact driver…so glad I did! Absolutely bosses screws in and out at a rate of knots much faster than a regular drill. The 3 speed control is really useful for those more delicate jobs. The one-handed quick release is also really useful if you’re up a ladder or holding your work with the other hand.

I decided to take up the DEAL PRICE on this BARE UNIT Impact Driver. I already had batteries from my DeWalt drill driver. Sometimes in hardwoods like oak and thick timber like railway sleepers my drill wasn't doing it, but the impact driver really hammers the screws home with ease. I love it A++

Usual high quality DeWalt product at excellent PowerTool World prices. I have used this as part of an oak frame garage build, easily drives 150mm long 6mm dia timber screws in to the oak. The halo lights give a good pool of light, great for working in dim corners. The three settings are useful but the top setting I dont use that often, only when needing that extra posh. For my use the 2Ah battery lasts well
I purchased this impact because I've recently had access to several used Dewalt batteries and have found many are still good batteries. I'm a very avid fan of Milwaukee tools but since I have a source for the Dewalt batteries I thought that I would get this impact to compair it to my Milwaukee FUEL impact. I've got yo say that I was pleasantly surprised and plan to add it to my regularly used tools. The price was very fair too and it was delivered in just a few days. So far it has been a good decision to give this Dewalt tool a try.
I've purchased some 20-volt brushless DeWALT tool models. This effortlessly drives in screws that would have twisted off or otherwise make it very difficult to drive with a conventional drill. It does a FANTASTIC job as an impact wrench driving large lags into hardwood. Again, only after using one will you appreciate that you NEED one. Their batteries are PAINFULLY expensive.
Another great DEWALT product to add to my arsenal. Truly a great piece of kit is this impact driver. I’ve historically used a drill/driver on screws, but found it too weak for the job on some occasions. A tradesman allowed me to use his impact driver and I immediately needed knew that this is exactly what I need. Powerful, great torque, lightweight and with 3 led lights making it a pleasure to use. I bought the body only as I can use a battery from the other power tools I have and I am very happy with this purchase.
If you are already on the Dewalt battery platform buying this impact driver is a "no brainer". It is sturdy, well made and has heaps more driving power that you'll ever really need. I am a tradesman and have always just used a cordless drill for screw driving tasks. This impact driver has quickly become my most used tool by a wide margin. The drill only every sees the light of day now for pre-drilling where I'm worried about splitting or fastening to heavy steel and drilling tiles, etc. There are plenty of comparison reviews online which pit this driver off against comparable drivers from other quality brands, but just to give an idea of the driving power, it easily (and quickly) drove a 38mm 8g pan head self tapper all the way through a 70mm pine stud. Keep in mind that this is not a countersinking, self cutting head fastener, it is a pan head. I have found the slow speed to be mostly useless. There might certain cases where it is useful but I haven't found any yet. My driver pretty well lives in #2 speed. This is probably due to the type of work screws I am driving all day every day, 8g and 10g into wall plugs, timber, light and heavy steel. I think the highest speed would probably be quite useful for 14g hex fasteners (T17 and metal drilling) as jumping off the fastener isless of a concern. I find the variable speed trigger on speed #2 allows plenty of control and the impact mechanism almost acts as a clutch when fastening into wall plugs. I never use the clutch when driving screws with a cordless drill, just feather the variable speed to get the correct torque. With this impact driver in speed #2, and fixing 8g fasteners into wall plugs, I feather the speed down and allow one or two clicks of the impact mechanism and that's about right. I know it's not designed as a clutch mechanism but is kind of works that way for certain driving applications. This driver isn't perfect though and the one downside is the amount of play in the chuck. It is my first impact driver so don't really have others to compare it to but I have read a lot of reviews on various branded impact drivers and I understand that all have play in the chuck to some degree, but Dewalt is the worst for this. There is a fair amount of wobble at the end of a 150mm driver bit (which I have to use for most of my work). This really only becomes a problem when using longish self drilling metal screws. You have to use good quality, matched fasteners/bit and line up perfectly during the drilling stage or the bit will jump off the screw. If you aren't already bought into the Dewalt platformand you are trying to decide if this impact driver is the tool to pursued you to do so, then your decision is a bit more difficult. It is a very good tool and many online test comparisons show it outperforming other quality brands. However I think the brushless, 18v impact driver options from each of the trade quality tool manufacturers is plenty good enough to serve you well. Therefore I don't believe the impact driver alone will be the tool to convince anyone to buy into a particular platform. That decision should be based on overall affordability and availability of the tools you need within the range. I find Dewalt tools and batteries can be found a bit cheaper than Milwaukee, Makita and Hilti. The Dewalt range has tools the others don't and the others have tools Dewalt doesn't. If you are like me and have specific tool requirements, none of the platforms have all the tools you need. I have to run 3 different platforms........argh!
I bought this impact driver as part of a five piece kit in June 2020, when I finally decided on DeWalt as the tool brand I would buy into, after some research and asking various friends. In hindsight I think I made the right decision, and I wish I’d taken the plunge into the DeWalt cordless tools sooner! I persisted with a mediocre corded Bosch drill for my driving needs for far too long! This is the first impact driver I’ve owned. I had used my friend's Makita impact driver a bunch of times, but for some reason I was dismissive of the need for such a tool when he suggested I get one. That was naive, because I’ve since found the impact driver to be an almost essential tool to have. They drive screws way more easily than my old Bosch drill. I had used my friend's Makita impact driver a bunch of times, but for some reason I was dismissive of the need for such a tool when he suggested I get one. That was naive, because I’ve since found the impact driver to be an almost essential tool to have. They drive screws way more easily than my old Bosch drill. And they go a long way in overcoming the issue of a Phillips bit camming out of a Phillips screw. My old drill struggles to drive some of the longer 14g batten screws into hardwood, for example, but this impact driver has no problem. It also has no trouble driving 12g roofing screws into hardwood without pre-drilling. I’ve mainly used it with hardwood and it’s managed everything I’ve thrown at it.I also have a cheaper DeWalt impact Driver which I got from a redemption, the DCF787N-XJ, and with 170 Nm of torque, it’s noticeably less powerful than this DCF887 with 205 Nm of torque. The DCF787 seems to start impacting much sooner than the DCF887, so I’d recommend this one over the cheaper one.The three LED’s surrounding the hex holder of the drill are fully effective at lighting up the working space. It’s quite compact, so useful for driving screws in tight spaces. It’s lightweight, well balanced and comfortable to hold; it seems to fit my large hands perfectly - certainly a lot better than my Bosch drill which caused my hand to ache after a while.Another feature I love is the chuck design, which contains a spring to eject the bit and enables me to change bits quickly and easily with only one hand.I’d recommend using a smaller 18V battery with it, like the 4 Ah or 5 Ah, rather than the larger 18V/54V Flexvolt batteries, in order to save on weight. My kit only came with the larger 6 Ah batteries, and it made the drill a little unwieldy to use. The 4 or 5 Ah batteries are more than sufficient - they last so long that I basically forget about charging them. They would last me a week of heavy use, or weeks of light use.I can’t think of any negatives with this driver, it ticks all the boxes for me.
Bought as a second driver for the added torque for driving 6 120mm stud screws quickly and flexibility of the 3 speed settings, i found my existing impact driver whist brilliant was a bit to much for smaller screws, so now i can use the 887 for the big and small jobs and the 787 for the in between jobs with different bits installed to speed up workflow. I have been very impressed by the dewalt yellow range so far. I did wonder initially if i should have gone up to festool etc, but for the work i am doing the 18v dewalts are in for the win. Have the 2ah batts for the impact driver so keeps weight down and the 5ah on everything else.
