Love this saw so far. Had it for about 2 weeks now. I been cutting 1” thick x 6” in length mild steel. Blade is cool to the touch after the cut. Fast cutting. Takes 1 minute per cut. So far I have made 8 feet of cuts and blade still feels cool also still sharp. Also the motor feels to have plenty of power. I do not know about the duration of the blade but the time savings is worth having a few spare blades.Pros:Fast cutting saw, powerful motor, will cut through thick steel, blade and steel are cool to the touch.Cons:The only reason I do not have a 5 star.. The base is a little weak. My first cut I thought the steel was pinned in tight but it vibrated loose. You have to really crank down on the piece to get it to hold. Everything has worked well with this sauce so far, and the stock blade is better than I was expecting. I’ve been using it on hot, rolled one and a half inch solid, steel rod and 3/8 inch 3 x 6 angle iron. The black paint on the frame does tend to scratch, pretty easily, and it would be great to get an additional angle of freedom for cutting, like a compound mitre saw.

Great motor, good blade, poor table.
18 July 2019

I purchased this saw almost two years ago, it replaced my dewalt abrasive chop saw. For me it’s the better tool for the job. My only issue with the tool pertains to the table quality. The table is press formed stamped mild steel with raised and recessed channels. My table has become dented and bowed. Maybe the table should be milled cast steel. The work to be cut no longer sits flat. The angle fence is ok. The measurement scale is ok, must use a square to tram the fence to blade good practice anyways. It just so happens that the table is such an issue someone has made an upgraded unit. Saunders Machine Works has part of the solution it’s not perfect but it’s a start.

I just purchased the DEWALT DW872 14-inch Multi-Cutter Saw, took it out of the box and tried it out. It did not cut square in the horizontal or vertical plane. The horizontal direction is easy to set by adjusting the fence, however the vertical plane needed the saw to be shimmed with .005 shim stock to get it cutting anywhere near square. The vise is so poorly designed it needed a total rebuild to make it at least safe. The designer of this very expensive saw decided to tilt the locking jaw 3/16 out of square, I suppose, to put more pressure on the top of the material. With that brilliant plan the saw will not hold many different sizes of stock securely. The designer of this very expensive saw decided to tilt the locking jaw 3/16 out of square, I suppose, to put more pressure on the top of the material. With that brilliant plan the saw will not hold many different sizes of stock securely. The "designer" also left so much play in the vise jaw to table connection that the jaw rides up a 1/4 inch when tightened. To overcome these dangerous features I first made a new, thicker, spacer that has much less play in it so the vise jaw does not ride up when tightened. The next fix was the tilted movable vise jaw. After machining a tapered piece of 3/8 inch steel to match the taper of the jaw, securing it to the existing jaw, the vise now holds a variety of material sizes securely. The next job is to try to contain or direct the shower of sharp shrapnel that fires out the back side of this tool. In closing, if you want 90 degree cuts and own a nice size machine shop and have 50 years experience making and fixing things, this saw can be made to work. I would not recommend it for a professional.

If you are researching high quality saws read below... I purchased this saw after considering the Makita LC1230 12" saw due to the larger blade diameter. I soon returned the DeWalt because of some serious design flaws. The base is stamped steel and when material is clamped the base flexes. An additional vertical clamp is included which if used would increase the amount of time needed to perform cuts. When the material holder is set to a specific angle, I wasn't able to retain this angle after clamping the material because the angle adjustment clamp was not strong enough. The angle is not quick to adjust and the workmanship is terrible. The blade guard is plastic, and the mechanism for opening/closing the guard felt as if it would break. I would not recommend purchasing this saw, and would highly recommend the Makita LC1230 instead. The features, ease of use and construction are superior. The base is cast and does not flex at all. The clamp is super simple to operate and does not budge after an angle is set using a huge lever (I'm still marveling at how well this works). The blade guard is metal, and the mechanism feels solid when opening and closing the guard. Despite the smaller diameter blade, I am very pleased with the purchase and hope this info helps in your research!

This is what I found out. The saw cuts amazing compared to an abrasive saw and in a fraction of the time. The saw from the silver cast aluminum saw mount up is great!! It cuts a lower rpm than most other saws, I was worried it would bog down but it never did cutting 3x3 1\8 thick tube steel. The blade seems to have some wobble to it however it is consistent and the cuts are square. The Yellow blade guard and spark deflector however are not designed very well. Cutting the 3x3 tube steel at a 45 I had to remove the spark deflector and cut off about 1" of the blade guard so that I could complete the cuts. A 14" saw needs to be able to cut the size of material it was made to cut without having to remove safety features and cutting the blade guard to do so. The base ... MoreThis is what I found out. A 14" saw needs to be able to cut the size of material it was made to cut without having to remove safety features and cutting the blade guard to do so. The base however leaves much room for improvement. It has a quick release to change the angles of cut however it still needs a square or a 45 to set it correctly, ie not tabs that are dependable??????? When the fence is set correctly it will move each time you clam steel into the cutting vice. at 90 is not as bad as the 45 but still you can not count on it to stay true. We change this by drilling secondary holes that we put pins through to be a perfect 90 or 45 and stay true no matter how much pressure we put on it with the vice. All of these issues could have be resolved by Dewalt with some simple indexing that would keep the vice true and remove the need to set the fence with a square or a 45!!!!!!!!!! The saw comes with a clamp to hold your cutting material down to the cutting table, but again poor though on this part. It has three places you can put the clamp for the different positions of the fence. However you can not use it for cutting 1x1 stock as the clamp will not fit where needed and there are not spaces for it when you adjust the fence to its middle positions. Two more rectangle wholes is all that is needed, a simple die adjustment from Dewalt to punch five holes not just three. To sum up this saw, it is a great cutter and performs very well from the middle up. from the middle down it is a half hearted attempt at making something that is not really available on the market today. While these oversights are disappointing I still would buy this over some of the other saws I have seen. Four stars is because of it cutting performance and ability.

This saw replaces an abrasive saw that I have used for a long time. The Dewalt cuts steel like butter. The cuts are very accurate once you get the fence where you want it. But therein is the reason that I only gave it three stars. The fence adjustment is difficult and slow. It binds while adjusting requiring a lot of time back and forth with the Allen wrench and the locking lever. I make a lot of angled cuts, so the fence problem is a real pain. I will take the fence mechanism apart shortly and lubricate it to see if that helps. I will edit this review to let you know if that solved the binding problem. EDIT: I have discovered what causes the binding. There is a pin on the fence mechanism described as spring-loaded pin, (Item E, Fig. 11 of the users manual.) If this pin is engaged in hole F, Fig. 11 then the fence binds when attempting to adjust the fence angle. I disengaged this pin and then the fence angle was adjustable with no binding problem. The fence remained solidly fixed in position without the pin. Because the pin is described as further securing the fence position you should use your own discretion about disabling it.

Very good metal chop saw
20 November 2019

I've been looking at metal cutoff/chop saws for a long time. I've looked at the friction cutoff and carbide blades. I tried several saws, much cheaper and also much less quality. This is by far the best saw I've tried, and I love it. I decided to go with the carbide blade because I wanted to cut aluminum, brass, and steel. The motor is very strong, the blade cuts like a hot knife through butter, and the base is very stiff. The vise is good, better than any others. The motor is attached to a very strong aluminum casting that contains the spring and pivot. There is a sliding pin that locks the motor down in a closed position for carrying or storage. The aluminum casting is attached to the base with two large cap screws, and aligned using two hardened steel dowel pins. This means that the saw is accurately aligned to the table and wont shift over time, even if the cap screws loosen up a little bit. There is also a guard over the blade under the table so there is no accidental contact with the blade. When closed, the cover locks closed as well and you cant open it to access the blade. You have to open the saw up all the way to access the blade. Lots of nice little safety items added to this saw. I would recommend this saw over any others that I have tried. I've used it for cutting steel for several cabinet and shop fixtures, and aluminum bar and tube stock for several machining projects. It has been a dream to use, and I expect it to last me a long, long time.

best chop saw I've used

I have used several different chop saws, most using friction blades to cut ferrous metals. I needed a saw for home use, and tried to get off cheap by using one from Harbor Freight. That turned out to be a mistake, and caused me to rethink my use of the saw. I wanted one that could cut aluminum, brass, as well as steel. The friction blades are only usable on steel.I have always had good service from DeWalt tools, and I decided to give this saw a try. I have been very pleased with this saw. I have been very pleased with this saw. And I have noted that there are some significant quality differences between this saw and others.First, the table is very stiff. It is made from two layers of steel stampings that are nested together and (i think) welded into a single base. It is incredibly rigid and does not flex even when cutting large and long materials. I noticed that there is a cover over the blade under the table as well, so the blade is not exposed even under the table. Nice safety touch.Second, the blade guard retracts easily and smoothly as you lower the saw. The lesser quality saws felt clunky in this aspect, but this saw is smooth and effortless. The blade guard is easy to retract when the saw is wide open to change the blade. One nice little feature that I haven't seen on any other saw is a small flap, or cover, over the bolt that you have to push open to get the wrench on the Allen screw. This appears to be spring loaded and would likely push the wrench out of the Allen screw in the event you forgot to remove it. Not sure if that's what it's for, but it seems likely. Also, I noticed that when locked closed, the blade guard is also locked and there is no way to accidentally get to the blade.Third, the motor is smooth and powerful. The saw starts and runs easily, and doesnt sound like an old thrashing machine. The motor is more than powerful enough to easily cut through large steel angles, tubes, channels, and flats.Fourth, the motor attaches to the base using a very strong and beefy aluminum casting that houses the spring and pivot, as well as a pin to lock the saw in the closed position. This aluminum housing is attached to the base using two large Allen cap screws and two 1/4" dowel pins to ensure alignment. The only downside I can see is the fence system is a little strange. It locks easily, and is easy to re-position for different depths or angles of cuts. However, the alignment of the fence to the blade pretty much requires the use of a square any time you loosen the clamp if you need to hold precise angles. There is an adjustable protractor gauge that you can adjust for square. The downside is that it has an etched line that you need to eyeball even with the side if the slot in the base. A more repeatable and precise angle adjustment would have been nice. I'm not too worried about it, because for structural parts the angles are close enough. For materials I'm going to turn in the lathe or mill, I would cut them oversize and machine down to a much higher precision anyway.
