DRT50ZJ Makita 18V LXT Cordless Router Trimmer - Bare Unit
The Makita DRT50ZJ is the first cordless router trimmer in the Makita range. It features a brushless motor for low maintenance and longer runtime per battery. Designed without carbon brushes, these motors run cooler and far more efficiently resulting in a long trouble free working life. The DRT50ZJ motor unit has a solid construction and aluminium housing for high durability and accuracy. The soft-start feature prevents any initial jolt and the constant speed control maintains the speed under load. A variable speed dial allows you to choose the speed from between 10,000 to 30,000 rpm. It is compatible with any of the Makita 18V LXT batteries up to 6.0Ah. Other features include an LED job light to illuminate the work area, push button on/off switch with an on/off safety button to prevent unintentional start-up. A shaft lock makes changing cutters straightforward. This body only version comes with a trimmer base giving you up to 40mm depth adjustment with fine control. The base has an elastomer grip for control and comfort, and a large open section for improved visibility. A non-marking plastic baseplate allows the trimmer to glide smoothly over the work. The DRT20ZJ also includes a 1/4" collet, straight guide fence, dust extraction adaptor, template guide, wrenches and a Makpac 4 storage case.

I currently have the Makita RP0900X and decided to buy this, because I’m slowly upgrading to cordless (and better quality) tools. This is a really nice bit of kit and it’s nice to be able to not have to worry about an extension reel/cord for power. It’s light, well made, is easy to set up and micro-adjust and this router isn’t only just a trimmer, but has accessories available to turn it into a plunge router (for an extra £50ish).On the front are two buttons; one to unlock/lock the tool and the other is the power button to turn it on. It also has speed settings, so you can adjust the speed if needed. The detail I do like, is that it comes with the two standard flat spanners to undo the collet, but there’s also a button to press on the side which locks the spindle ... MoreI currently have the Makita RP0900X and decided to buy this, because I’m slowly upgrading to cordless (and better quality) tools. The detail I do like, is that it comes with the two standard flat spanners to undo the collet, but there’s also a button to press on the side which locks the spindle in place, so, if you want, you only need to use the biggest spanner (22mm) and a pressing of the spindle lock button to undo it. This means, if the button stops working for whatever reason (read: being heavy handed), you then have the option to still use the two spanner’s to undo the router bit - a great option! So all in all, it’s a great power tool. It looks very robust (although, having only used it a few times so far, I can’t really comment on it’s reliability as yet), is a good price compared to DeWalt, to which their equivalent is £300 (but is a bit more powerful in use) and has some nice details and an ability to use a plunge base, etc. Highly recommended.

I’ve only ever had a larger router for kitchen work surfaces, but always found that it was too cumbersome for finer jobs.Enter this model.it fits in your palm.It has a lot of power. It has a lot of additional accessories that enhance its use.I literally only have the router basic set at the moment but plan to buy the add ones as required.A brilliant piece of kit!

The router this fine and performance if great. However the information on the website is a little misleading. It mentions a base, which I took to mean the detachable base shown in the third picture. This is not the case. Also it say that a fence does not come with it when it does, but it has no bars, so the fence is useless.

My first router was a 110 V Elu MOF177 of which the original DW625 was a clone. I still own and regularly use the Elu 25 years on. I also own a new DW625EK. 1/2" machines are great and I've sworn by them for years. Sometimes, a job comes up where you need a router/trimmer and a half-inch machine is just too big.I needed something small, and already having a bunch of Makita 18 V tools, 3 chargers and a lot of batteries, this seemed like a good choice. At the asking price, it's bargain. Brushless motor, no replaceable (or irreplaceable) carbon brushes in sight! It's solidly built, feels good in the hand and the adjustable height trimmer base and lower body are nicely machined from chunky aluminium. There are two LED worklights in the base, activated by the lock ... MoreMy first router was a 110 V Elu MOF177 of which the original DW625 was a clone. Brushless motor, no replaceable (or irreplaceable) carbon brushes in sight! It's solidly built, feels good in the hand and the adjustable height trimmer base and lower body are nicely machined from chunky aluminium. There are two LED worklights in the base, activated by the lock button. Starting is a two-button affair. The lock button turns on the lights and wakes the machine up. Pressing the power button within a few seconds starts the motor. If you don't start it after a few seconds, it goes back to sleep. Great safety feature. Yes, it's only an 18 V cordless machine, HOWEVER, make no mistake, it's a router with a powerful motor and capable of inflicting life changing reductions in your number of available digits. It demands the same respect as any corded router. The detailed description on here is a bit pants to be honest, and looking at the Q&A, I'm clearly not alone in my view. What's in the (very nice and robust MakPac) box:Bare bodyTrimmer baseDust extraction adapter 32 mm/37 mm (ID/OD)Two spanners (there's a collet lock pin on the machine, so you only really need one of them)1/4" collet fitted to the machine8 mm collet also in the boxEdge guide10-ish mm guide bush (I haven't used it yet, so can't comment on how accurately it centres to the spindle)Useful fabric divider thingy to organise everythingUser manualLike a lot of Makita tools, it has LED worklights built in. 2 of them, one either side of the spindle. Really useful addition when working in less than ideally lit conditions.Speed (no-load) is variable from 10000 to 30000 rpm in 5 steps. It's powerful and cuts well, even in the most demanding materials. I wouldn't advocate this to anyone else, but it's doing a fine job of carefully template trimming 3mm thick 1.4301 (304) stainless steel at its lowest speed setting. The base material is super-slippy and glides really smoothly over the workpiece. It also seems to be pretty durable (no gouges or scratches in it so far)The dust extraction shroud is great. My Mirka sander hose with the end unscrewed fits perfectly and there's not a bit of dust or debris in sight when connected to my humble Fox dust extractor. The 10 mm guide bush might be a bit limiting, however a quick internet search reveals 3rd party baseplates which can be screwed to the trimmer base which will accept the more usual industry standard guide bushes from the likes of Trend, Leigh, UJK etc.Battery life is very good. Half an hour of use and the battery indicator still showed four lights. All in all, this is a great little machine, and at the asking price, it's an absolute bargain!
Having used the mains version for years, I wanted to upgrade to the 18v version and this package that includes the large Makpac is a great deal. The trimmer is superb to use... light, quiet and powerful as you would expect from Makita. One point to note... the tool is listed as 3/8" (I thought I would have to purchase a 1/4" collet separately), but it actually comes with a 1/4" collet pre installed, (which will also accept 6mm shank cutters) and the 3/8" cone packaged separately with the two wrenches. There is also a basic side fence, a dust extractor attachment and a compartmentalised canvas bag inside the Makpac. Very pleased with this purchase!
This is Makita good!Smaller than I expected but no less able. Being cordless it's great and safer. This is a really well thought out machine, simple controls including a variable speed control, good and accurate depth adjustment, a bright work light, very comfortable to use. Changing bits is easy, inverting the router and using the battery located on the top of the router as a stable base.As I have other Makita power tools, buying the body only, sharing battery and charger, makes so much sense. The router comes with a Makita plastic carry/storage box much larger than it needs.I definitely recommend this product.
First one I received stopped working after 10 minutes due to a faulty switch. The replacement has been fine and worked well for an hour, so hopefully won't break again. However, this is my second Makita tool this year to break so worried if I made the right choice of brand...
Exactly what I needed - when I needed it. Been after one for ages, price with the case was better than comparable sites/stores and delivery was next day. No complaints from me!
Love this Makita Router… well made, easy to use. Especially love the compact size. I’ll be buying the plunge router base soon.. great that you can add the extra bits when needed.
Needed a router to complete a diy project at home so went for Makita to compliment every other bit of gear Ive got - my garage is like a Makita factory! As expected, absolute top quality piece of kit. Bought the plunge base separately to compliment it and have to say its so easy to use. Powerful motor, and surprisingly quiet. Maybe a little heavier to handle than others but this just backs up the build quality. Used it to cut a lot of grooves for led tracks in some bamboo flooring and it went through it no problem - buy decent router bits of course! Dont hesitate if you need a router - superb.
