Dulux Aquanamel Low Gloss is a non-yellowing, water-based interior acrylic enamel that dries to a low-gloss and durable, chip-resistant finish. It can be used in most areas where traditional oil-based enamels are applied, with the time-saving benefits of acrylic paint. Aquanamel Low Gloss is highly recommended for doors, cupboards, panelling, balustrades and trims, and is ideal for bathrooms, kitchens and laundries. Use it on concrete, masonry, MDF, plasterboard, set plaster, timber, Laminex, aluminium, galvanised steel, non-ferrous metals, and previously painted plasterboard.

Wrote a review about Aquanamel about a year ago. The scathing (plus 1 or two positive) reviews have been removed so I thought I'd give an update. I gave it 2 stars at the time and will give it the same again. In no way is this a high gloss paint. Application was painful and others have described that. After a year I can say that it has not yellowed which is a positive. The annoying thing about this paint is that when it's applied using the instructions on the tin, it's slightly abrasive when it dries. This means that it collects dirt. At least it's reasonably hard wearing and can be cleaned easily (just dont let small dogs near it :). Google "how to apply" videos for this paint. I purchased this to repaint a varnished fish tank cabinet in 2019. After stripping back the clear coat, I applied 2 coats of Bullseye 321 primer/stain block, before painting with the Aquanamel. It came up beautifully and still looks freshly painted today. My advice is not to be in a hurry as this paint dries quickly, but remains soft and will mark easily until it has hardened. I put the cabinet out in the sun for several days to "bake" and have had a lasting finish. I left it for several weeks before reassembling to make sure it was fully cured. It's best rolled as brush marks are horrible and it doesn't cover well, so I used a brush to get into crevices etc for the first coat, then rolled the second and third coats after sanding back in between coats. It's very thin and needed 3 coats, but is worth the extra work. Another thing to note is to stir it thoroughly, as it forms a sludge in the bottom of the tin that doesn't get mixed in, even with the shaker at Bunnings. I tinted it Dowager Grey from the Taubmans colour range and it is stunning. I bought a 2L tin and it's amazing how far it spreads as only thin coats are done. I've also painted a metal outdoor mirror frame, 2x bedside tables, a stereo cabinet, a small wooden outdoor table, several small cupboards and the 2ft fish tank cabinet, all out of 2L. All came up beautifully with the same technique. I used every last drop of the paint and will be buying another tin shortly for more projects.

Excellent product, sanded back my oil-based cavity sliders with my Makita orbital, wiped them down and re-painted with a 270mm foam roller for that smooth finish! (cut in with the 100mm foam roller too around the edges). Be patient between coats. Let it dry completely (I waited a few hours) before applying a second coat, roll out evenly and you will get the perfect Gloss finish. People leaving a bad review are not applying the product correctly. Don't rush it. I chose vivid white. Happy custpmer!

Grea for our kitchen redecoration!
22 August 2023

I researched paint options a lot before we started our project. We wanted to paint our kitchen cupboards and walls instead of a complete reno. We went with Aquaenamel semi-gloss for the timber cupboards which gave us the perfect finish - I also wasn’t willing to use enamel paint due to the mess and health concerns. I purchased a Wagner DIY paint sprayer for the cupboards which saved time and worked really well. The trick was all in the preparation. Some tips… take the cupboards off if you can, patch up any holes or large scratches, sand lightly with a fine grain sandpaper so the first coat will stick, clean the cupboards then apply two coats of primer, sanding lightly between each coat and allowing each coat to dry before the next. We then used two coats of coloured paint, sanding lightly again and drying between each coat. It’s a hard wearing paint, you just need to make sure you let it dry sufficiently before going to the next stage. We let the cupboards sit for 2 days between each coat, and 2 weeks before we put them all up again (probably overkill!), and avoided painting on days that were too hot/cold or humid, per the product specs. I did paint some sections by hand - this was a bit tricky as you have to move more quickly before the paint becomes tacky. The finish is still good though. We did need more paint than I’d calculated - I’m not sure why as we also diluted it in the sprayer, but we got the job done and we are very happy with it!

Great results painting my first window
3 August 2023

I have never used Aquanamel before, and I'm also new to house painting. I used this to paint an old varnished wooden window, and I had great results. I did see online reviews were a mixed bag. Heeding the reviews, I painted in cool weather, light sanding first, then Zinsser 123 primer, caulking, and three coats of Aquanamel. The paint finish is really good, smooth with no bubbles. The coverage is also good. Third coat was really just for good measure. I'm going to use this on the rest of the house.

Ive worked with this product almost every week day for past 3 years. It isn’t the best aquanamel, that would be haymes but is still good. it’s cheaper than haymes and you get what you pay for. Ive been painting for over 10 years and don’t have any issues with this product. Oil based is a stronger finish however this is far easier to use for those that aren’t painters and is more environmentally friendly. Also don’t get the fumes you get from an oil based gloss either. The negative reviews are clearly by people who have no idea what there doing. As long as you make sure your undercoat is solid (I recommend 2 coats of 1 step oil based undercoat) this will cover in 2 easily. Beautiful paint - easy to work, easy to clean and applies really well with enough malleability to pick up any issues. I bought 4L of this and found it quite good to brush on skirting boards where the finish is not super critical. At that stage I had nothing to compare it with. On metal door frames I found it a bit trickier to apply but resolved that via technique. It skins and dries very fast so that can be a challenge also. I really struggled applying this to old doors laid flat. Brushing it on left enormous corrugations from the brush given it dried so fast. Undercoating didn't help. The best result I got was literally pouring the product from a paint pot, spreading it evenly with dry roller across the surface until evenly applied, then with same short nap roller rolled it. Must be applied very thick and multiple coats. Following the dulux instructions didn't really help me. The best result was still sub standard. I then purchased Taubmans ultimate enanel and found it to be greatly superior. One coat, again poured on and spread with the roller, then rolled. It bleeds in very smooth flat and a very high gloss. The Taubmans is much slower drying (and smelly) so this in itself makes using it much more predictable. Perhaps a professional painter wouldn't struggle with the Dulux but professional I am not. I hope this helps. I think the Dulux is OK but not for flat internal doors.

Overall glad I switched to water based
30 October 2022

We had a new tiles, skirting and architraves installed and I decided to do the painting myself. The skirtings were pre primed, but as they are MDF I wanted to prime them myself to make sure they are sealed against any water from mopping.First I stared using the Dulux oil based primer and then the Dulux oil based semi gloss because of the durability of oil based enamel. However, after one room the difficulty applying the oil based products, especially cleaning up little spots when some would get on the tiles, just became too annoying. Also the fumes were quite bad, even with a proper painting mask and windows open. But I will say to looked good.So I chucked a wobbly and decided to go all water based. Also the fumes were quite bad, even with a proper painting mask and windows open. But I will say to looked good.So I chucked a wobbly and decided to go all water based. I bought the Dulux Precision Primer as it claimed to have the best adhesion. It adhered well over the oiled based enamel I had just applied a week ago, and you couldn’t scratch it off. Two coats of that primer was required over the pre primed MDF. The precision water based primer is pretty thick and does leave brush marks if you’re not careful. Then two coats of Dulux Aquanamel Semi Gloss, but could have gotten away with one.A lot easier to apply overall than the oil based, as wiping mistakes off the tiles and wall when cutting in as a hell of a lot easier and no fumes. You do get some brush marks but only noticeable close up. The trick is to have a decent amount of paint on your brush so it can flow, and don’t over work it. Glad I went for the semi gloss, has just the right amount of shine. I’m sure it won’t be as durable as the old oil based enamel but just a lot easier to apply overall. Can do touch ups pretty easy if people chip it. Also the added advantage is it won’t go yellow with age like the oil based. Our old skirtings and doors changed from crisp vivid white to an off white in about 3 years, so glad these will stay as vivid white.

Rubbish Paint
24 February 2023

Dulux used to make the best paint but now that they are owned by Nippon Paints their products have declined - dramatically. We purchased a can of Vivid White which was nice soft cream - certainly not Vivid White. We used it and actually liked the colour but a few months later we needed more so we purchased another. This one actually was white and naturally was totally different to the work we had done. What's more, what was left in the first can had decided to turn beige. We had the second can tinted to match the original (untinted) can but this batch was horrible. Awful to apply and wouldn't cover, even over undercoated surfaces. This is the last time I will ever purchase Dulux products and will now stick with Australian owned brands.
