I had no idea Dunlop made some many useful picks. I had long ago settled on the Tortex .88 mm (the green pick) for my standard, go-to pick, but I thought I might find a more grip-friendly pick for strumming chords, so I decided to see what else Dunlop offered, especially in the thin/medium range. Wow. The variety pack was an eye opener, and I'm now a big fan of Dunlop's Max Grip nylons and their Prime Grip Delrin 500s. I never would have known about them had I not taken a flyer on the variety pack.

A good variety of picks of different materials. As a beginner player it's allowed me to figure out what I like. The quality is good as expected of Dunlop picks. The only negative is that there aren't any really thin nylon picks: 0.6mm is the thinnest but this is a minor nitpick.

My one complaint is that this pack comes with 2 nylon picks and 2 nylon max-grip picks which are essentially the same. They could leave out the two excess nylon picks and trade them for a bigger variety, I would have loved to try the gel or delrin picks. Even better they could have sent two sizes of Ultex and 2 Sharp. As it stands this pack (they're all the same) comes with .60/.73 Tortex, .58/.71 Gator Grip, .60/.73 Nylon and Max-Grip, T/M Celluloid, .60 Ultex and a .73 Ultex sharp. If you want what I just listed then this is for you! Personally these packs confirmed to me that I prefer Ultex for any size, any pick. Ultex has great sound, no floppy pick noise and by far the most durability. Nylon has always blown my mind by how fast it wears and how loud and ... MoreMy one complaint is that this pack comes with 2 nylon picks and 2 nylon max-grip picks which are essentially the same. Dunlop gets it! What is my answer when asked what pick I use? Well, I need more information. What guitar am I playing and what style of music? Acoustic or electric? Am I playing live or recording? The guitar pick is your first point of contact with your instrument and affects your technique and your tone. I have a half dozen different picks I use for different applications. An painter doesn't use a single style brush on every canvas and guitar players should figure out the right set of picks (brushes) to paint their canvases (guitars). There is not a single pick for everyone, but there are many picks to help you create your art.
This bunch produces a good variety of tones; well worth the money spent. On my guitar and the way I play (meaning, not sure if this is generally true), I got the mellowest warm tone with the Nylon and brightest with Tortex and a little less so with Ultex. The prettiest Celluloid was kind of in the middle. Gator Grip was kind of slippery (powdery surface feel) for me. Those who are very comfortable holding the pick would like the ease of adjusting while playing; being a finger-picker for the most part, I find it hard to use. Max Grip was just that -- great grip; very close to the sound of Nylon if not the same; some might like the grip, but I found it too difficult to adjust while playing due to the tight grip.I wanted to sport a fancy pick, but ended up liking the ... MoreThis bunch produces a good variety of tones; well worth the money spent. Other picks would have a use at some point, but Nylon works best for me for now. It's a nice collection to have to try different ones now and then.
While I only purchased pics on this visit, Judd inside the acoustic room gave me a lot of great information on purchasing a new acoustic guitar. He asked all the right questions to find out where to guide me. He showed me a few awesome guitars in my price range, tuned them up, and encouraged me to play. I'm usually a bit nervous playing around other people, but his encouragement made me feel comfortable. I will certainly shop at Sam Ash again, and when I go to make my acoustic guitar purchase, it will be through Judd. I highly recommend taking a stroll in there. On a side note, everybody else in Sam Ash is always super friendly, greets me whenever I come in each separate area, and they all are very knowledgeable.
He wanted me to try a lighter pick. I have been loyal to the Ernie Ball Prodigy 2.0 for a few years but I went ahead with his suggestion. I went with the Dunlop variety pack (Medium-Heavy) and found the Gator Grip picks much to my liking.
I have a pick dish on my recording desk filled with Dunlop picks. Every time I record a new part I find the pick that suits the tone and expression I'm seeking. The variety that's available in the pack is perfect for achieving my recording goals. This is a fantastic and convenient product!
bought these and the acoustic set. Great selection of picks/plectrums to experiment with and find my favorite before buying a total set. Arrived very quickly also!
dunlop make all my favorites. i have one worn down red nylon pick, half its original size. ive had over 20 years. its retired now. you cant break certain models. impossible super variety pack. sport it!
