Eau Sauvage Cologne Spray – Christian Dior

The factors that I believe measure and define the value of a designer fragrance are as follows: Does it perform with respectable longevity and sillage? Is it mass pleasing? Is it high quality? Is it affordable? A final less important point - what is the presentation like (bottle, atomiser, cap, box)? Whatever you think of Sauvage, it satisfies all these criteria admirably. It has arguably become a victim of it's own success, spawning a host of inspired variants of fresh fragrances that try to capture its spirit. Francois Demachy (the former in-house perfumer at Dior) created a masterpiece in this fragrance, and it became wildly successful for a reason (other than Jonny Depp being the face of the campaign). It may not be entirely unique, and it may be overworn in the general public, but it is to my own mind the definition of a 'perfect' fragrance. Not that it has no flaws, but that it is so compelling for what it is and what else you could buy instead at that price point.

I have to admit that I’m a harsh critic of the whole Dior Sauvage line, but I always try to give fragrances their due credit. The bergamot and pepper opening has a sharp but well balanced fresh spiciness. Heading into the middle notes, lavender and geranium create a calming effect for that strong opening while Sichuan and pink pepper, along with vetiver, patchouli, and elemi maintain this fresh, citrusy and more aromatic vibe. The base consists of the ever famous ambroxan note, as well as cedar, and labdanum which all together bring in a bit of a musky woodiness that actually warms up the scent. When he wears this scent I just can’t get enough of him and how sexy he smells. This is a warm woodsy scent that lasts for around six hours on the skin. The performance blew me away cause I could and still smell this on me the next day even if I’m shower I can pick it up on my skin. Bright, juicy bergamots meets piercing black pepper , enveloped with sweet ambroxan. These notes mingle with lavender, vetiver, and spicy Sichuan pepper. Finally, it dries down to a sweet, peppery, woody scent with cedar, and still prominent ambroxan and pepper. I definitely get why some people despise this, cause it can be harsh and has that abrasive nature to it I feel like some people hate it cause it's like that underground song that they’re discovered and now it's on TikTok being ruined by a 12 years old kid. In conclusion, the only downside to this scent is that in some area's it may be very popular.

In general, I’m not a big fan of Dior Sauvage, but what the company did with the line, from a business perspective, is actually ingenious. Regardless of the fact that it’s not a groundbreaking, unique, or truly creative fragrance, Dior marketed this so well, that it didn’t need to be any of those things to succeed. In my opinion, the scent itself deserves no more than 3/5 stars. I’m giving it 4/5 because although it works better in warmer weather, you can still get away with it all year round, casual and formal occasions, and the performance (on most people) is actually comparable to some EDPs with 6-8+ hours, and at least 2-3 hours of solid projection. Whether you only have a couple fragrances, or you’re trying to build a collection, you can at least test it out to appreciate why it’s so famous, but there are much better options to buy if you want something in the same category. Even if a cologne or perfume is innovative, I find that they can sometimes lose value when people simply buy them because they’re popular. Take it however you want, but Dior Sauvage was made for fitting in, not standing out.

I accidentally reviewed the Eau de Parfum instead of the Parfum version, so editing now. Hated the Parfum. LOVE the Eau de Parfum. The two are very different. The Parfum is cigarettes tossed into a campfire in a gross way. The Eau de Parfum is an enveloping, amber tinged crisp salt air breeze. I enjoy wearing it in cooler weather that’s where it really shines. Full bottle worthy. Original sauvage is like a mens barbershop fragrance, but the EDP version isn’t defined that way. It is more of an artistic interpretation of the Johnny Depp ad campaign and I love it. Like literally standing in the middle of a vast wilderness but you smell like an attractive human.

A couple of friends recommended this fragrance to me so on a whim I decided to go out and buy it. I've owned fragrances before this purchase but never gave any particular scents a second thought until I got my nose on this one. For starters, there's the presentation. Sleek, simple, elegant. It also comes with a magnetic cap that is strong and effective. The atomizer is amazing, allowing you effective control of distribution. The scent starts out fresh and metallic and then dries down to an elegant musky aroma. For an EDT, this thing performs exquisitely with 8+ hours on my skin. There's a reason this is one of the most popular fragrances ever. And this is the cologne that initiated my fragrance journey!

Yet with the EDP, yes it’s still a synthetic ambroxan bomb. Yet most of the ladies seem to dig it. Although I’m more into Chanel’s Bleu line, that one is less complex than this one. It’s a safer pick, but this one is more fun. The notes in here are bergamot, lavender, pepper, nutmeg, vanilla, and something else. It’s mysterious as it arrives at the beginning of the dry down, yet it screams masculinity. Fall and winter are its best, but spring and summer work also. Projection is massive first few hours. Then it dials down a bit to a skin scent. The pepper stays from beginning to end. That alone is incredible. I love this scent, and while it’s not as warm/fresh as some, I find it unique. Haven’t tried the parfum yet, but that one the Fragrance of the Year from the industry. I find most EDP’s to be better overall performing, so until told otherwise on Sauvage, this one is my go to. Only minor complaint, is that this can’t be dressed down as easily, say as a YSL EDP. That works wearing blue jeans to a suit. The Sauvage EDP leans towards formal, but it can be business casual as well. It’s scent trail is very impressive. That is no doubt due to the ambroxan, but it draws the ladies in. This is a definite buy, and it’s pricing is competitive. With the bottle, you’ll love the atomizer and magnetic cap.

This a versatile fragrance but I’ll admit there are more “fun” or “sexy” fragrances to choose from if necessary. I would describe it as herbs, citrus rinds, and moss. If you know Terre d’Hermes I think this Eau Sauvage is better because I don’t care for the flint note in the other one, but the two are similar. This is hard to find in stores, so I would suggest getting a sample of it online first, or if you blind buy it and decide it’s not for you I promise your dad will wear it.

Not the Iconic Eau Savage of the Past - Avoid

I was being nostalgic and wanted to re-experience the classic cologne. Was a favorite of mine 20yrs ago. So I ordered this. But what I received couldn’t even be classified as a remote approximation of the original and iconic Eau Savage. I’m not even sure how to describe this scent but would place it at the bottom of a list of the worst alcohol saturated synthetic drug store “colognes”. Clubman or English Leather aftershaves would be favorable to this travesty of synthetic lemon polish in alcohol mess.I feel as if I’ve been ripped-off. Macy’s and the Dior companies should be ashamed.
