(257 reviews)

The Epiphone ES-335 is a sweet and soulful semi-hollow that's impressed generations of guitarists. Ever since its 1958 introduction, the ES-335 has defined the standards for semi-acoustic instruments. And the Epiphone ES-335 is no exception! Part of the "Inspired by Gibson" range, it features a layered maple top, back and sides, and a maple centre block to boast the same warm, natural sonics as the original. Indeed, it's brimming with heaps of sustain and resonance - any 335 lover's dream! Together with top class Epiphone Alnico Classic PRO humbuckers, the ES-335 delivers vintage tones with exceptional dynamics and definition. Reminiscent of the highly sought-after PAF sound, you can expect enough grit for crunchy rock and blues, and enough clarity for pristine jazz. Combined with CTS pots, you'll enjoy maximum responsiveness when adjusting your sound. And that's not all - a "C" shaped neck provides riffing comfort, while a Kalamazoo headstock and other visual appointments complete the authentic look. The Epiphone ES-335 is your ticket to a legendary guitar at a fraction of the price!

A great version of the classic guitar

Epiphone did a good job of recreating the classic semi-hollow body, but it isn't perfect. To start, it's very heavy. The neck and giant head (while very cool) causes significant "nose dive". I find myself pulling it up way more often then I would like. My second con is the pickups. They are good but break up a little too early for me. But, other than those two things it's an awesome guitar. The features like the binding on the neck, a burst finish, and inlays all over make it beautiful to look at and feel on the hands. You would pay big money for a Gibson with the same level of features. Build quality on mine is fine, binding edges are crisp, frets are level, wiring seems to be assembled well. However, I was more impressed with the Ibanez line if I went with a 335 copy. But this new "Inspired By Gibson" Epiphone ES-335 kills it in almost every category. I am so happy with this guitar. I'm unsure what Epiphone did with the headstock, but it's not ugly anymore. There's no more cheap plastic "E" on the pickguard and nothing on the truss rod cover. There is an understated elegance to the whole guitar. The finish is nice. It's not nitrocellulose, but it's not overly thick. The neck is a wonderful size for me. My large hands are fine with it, and there's no fight to it. The overall fit and finish of the guitar are excellent. The pickups and wiring harness is good just as is. I've played it extensively for several days, and I see no reason to change them. That is a happy discovery. That was a weak point of the old Epi Dots. I know they've gone up in price from the old Epi dots, but I think, dollar for dollar, they are a much better bargain. The tuners feel good, and I love the keystone buttons. The only thing I am changing is the nut. The Nu-Bone, while not plastic is a step down from the regular TUSQ material, and this guitar deserves a bone nut. In summary, this is an excellent guitar. I am so pleased with the purchase, and it's beautiful to look at. It's inspired by Gibson, and it looks like a Gibson. After a good set-up, it plays wonderfully. It is miles ahead of the old Epiphone Dots. It seems that lately, guitar manufacturers change things up every couple of years as a market strategy. I'm still upset with Fender for getting rid of the Baja Telecaster! But this is a change that is fantastic. The reasons for choosing Gibson over Epiphone are getting very small, indeed! As usual, Sweetwater has its act together as a music retailer. If they were a band, they would be the tightest band you've ever heard. I've come to expect this from them over multiple years with multiple purchases, but that doesn't mean it is not very much appreciated. A Tip of the hat to Alex Campos, and a second-to-none shipping department!

The only reason for the 3 star rating is the work it needed. A brand new instrument may need a setup, but it shouldn't need repairs. More details below, but lets start with what was really good. This "Inspired by Gibson" model has some awesome improvements over prior models. The Kalamazoo styled headstock is really nice. It still has the same challenges as the Gibson models, but it has a much more refined look than its predecessors. Same thing with the pick guard. These two improvements provide a far more polished look to the final product. These features may seem small to some, but I appreciate them. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I prefer the pickups in this model over the T-Types found in the the Gibson model. They don't have the same note separation or clarity as the T-Type, but they do have a warmer jazzy tone that I prefer, so I'm going to keep the pickups. On the "still not perfect side" of the conversation, many of these will require some additional work to get it in playable condition. Some reviewers have reported that they were perfect right out of the box, so it may be a hit and miss situation, but mine was a bit of a miss. I knew the issues were fixable, so I purchased it anyway. The factory setup was quite poor. There was far too much neck relief and the bridge was way too high. This wasn't a matter of simply not being set up the way I like my guitars. When I picked it up off the display, this one was unplayable. After fixing the relief and action, I found 2 dead frets. Not a buzz because the action was too low, but two completely dead frets (without bending). A fret level and crown was needed. My biggest critique is the fret ends were so sharp that I literally cut my finger on one. That had to be fixed. I had a professional do the fret repars and a full setup. Now, it plays flawlessly. One day I may end up replacing the bridge and tailpiece. They are fairly low quality, but on par with comparable instruments in this class. If you can do these types of repairs yourself or don't mind spending a little extra to have them done by a professional, this is a good value for most players and I would recommend it to my friends.

Great guitar
9 December 2022

I've wanted one of these for my collection for a while so when I saw it with a black Friday discount I went for it.The only negative so far was that it came with the action so low that the high e and b stirings were dead sounding. After some changes to the action which was simple enough after watching a Gibson YouTube tutorial and thanks to the simple to adjust tunomatic bridge the guitar came to life. The guitar Sounds brilliant and looks great. Amazing tones for those blues and rock riffs.Obviously if I had the money I'd shell out for the Gibson but at this price there is nothing to fault on the epiphone. Feels solid, sounds great, looks good and I'm really happy to have it in my collection.Overall experience with PMT was also positive. No complaints.

I've been playing guitar over 50 years, owned and sold many new and vintage "Major" name brands. Even own an original 59 les Paul double cut-away. I've also built 4 guitars from raw lumber. Enough about me, This is a surprising find. My first but not last Epiphone. There is a vibe going on here. The inspired by Gibson line is master stroke of manufacturing. They nailed it. The guitar is all the essence of the original 335, and there are many versions made by Gibson alone. The last NAMN show I attended before Covid I was in Gibson's huge show room with probable 50 variations of the 335. The last NAMN show I attended before Covid I was in Gibson's huge show room with probable 50 variations of the 335. I couldn't for the life of me really pick out one that I really liked- just too many to choose from. Epiphone however, wisely created basically 2, one with figured flame and one without. A couple of colors in each. The electronics, finish, playability, sound and Price are virtually the same. No jump in price like the Gibson line up - which more than doubles in some cases. The value here is solid. A friend of mine just built a 335, and he spent more on the wood for his project- not including the hardware and pickups than Guitar Center is asking for this finished guitar. I was close to building one myself, I am so glad I found this guitar- I got the Cherry stained 335. Now, be aware, as good as it gets, you should be prepared to add a few things to your purchase. New strings obviously, a hard shell case, Epiphone's is very reasonably priced, half that of Gibson's. Also, 4 out of 5 of these guitars I checked out in store were very well set up, that is the frets were smooth on the ends and the hardware was tight. I did find some of these that would require some fine tuning by a technician. I did dress and polish the frets on mine, though they were really great to start. But now the playability is equal to anything coming out of the Custom Shop. Let's face it. What you're really paying for if you go with a USA model is the nitro cel finish. It takes 2 months to finish a guitar properly with nitro. They have to sit and cure, and be filled and fussed with and after that the finish is hard but delicate. I'm really only a fan of Nitro on acoustic guitars. With electrics it just doesn't affect the sound. So would I buy it again, In fact I have ordered a Raspberry Tea burst 335 to round out my collection. I mean at this price why not? This is something I didn't even have to ask my wife about! Did I mention this guitar sounds amazing, esp the neck pickup, pots roll off very nice, neck is just the right dimensions, hits all three: Sounds good, looks good, plays good.

Purchased this Epiphone ES-335 Figured in blueberry burst from my local Guitar Center. The instrument itself is beautiful and the pictures don't do it justice. It's a real head-turner. The setup out of the box was very poor, but after some noodling around with the action I have to say this thing plays and sounds great. Does it sound as good as a Gibson ES-335? Of course not, but given it's almost $2500 cheaper how can anyone possibly complain? I also own a Gibson SG and a Fender Strat and I have to say it's pretty close to both of those in terms of playability and tone quality. A lot of people seem to hate on GC, but they've always been very nice and accommodating to me whether I'm making a big purchase, small purchase, or just standing around drooling over all the guitars buying nothing. My sales person AJ was a nice fellow and knew the product lines pretty well. I'm in between being a novice and intermediate player I'd say, and many "music stores" around my area seem to kind of look down their nose at you as they are all "real" musicians, or they give you a big pressure sale when you walk in. I've never had this experience in GC. I do still buy many things at small mom and pop shops to support my local economy, but I've not been steered wrong at GC.

Perfect from factory

Overall:Gone are the days of buying an Epiphone for the bones and upgrading everything.Out of the box, the bass side action was pretty high. 3 turns of a screw driver and a retune and it's perfection.Sweet, sustaining tones. The neck pickup is thick and rich, the bridge pickup bites with nice midrange.I have the Iced Tea finish and it is flawless. It's pretty loud, acoustically as well. The fingerboard is a nice, even, dark chocolatey color. There are no sharp frets, and the frets themselves are smooth and there's no grittiness when you bend a string. The tuners feel like quality.the right amount of resistance when you turn the key,.very smooth tuning. This guitar holds tune amazingly well. The nut is cut very, very well. I just spent an hour bending the hell out of ... MoreOverall:Gone are the days of buying an Epiphone for the bones and upgrading everything.Out of the box, the bass side action was pretty high. 3 turns of a screw driver and a retune and it's perfection.Sweet, sustaining tones. I just spent an hour bending the hell out of notes and it's still perfectly in tune.Even the strings that come with It are decent. If this was my only guitar (it's not, I own over 20 lol), I would be happy. If you've got less than $600 to spend and you want a high quality guitar, this is the one. Now, can it be made better with some upgrades?Maybe. We shall see. It's very easy to swap out the tailpiece for a lightweight aluminum one, the studs for locking steel studs, and the inserts for steel inserts. You can even find brass saddles that fit this bridge perfectly if you know where to look, as well as steel thumbwheel posts. Throw on some locking tuners while you've got it apart, and Bob's yer auntie. This one is a keeper. And with a 12 month payment plan? I'd only have to sell plasma twice a month to pay for it!

Really Nice Alternative to the Gibson Version
3 March 2023

I bought it used at the GC in pristine condition. For the money it's a great guitar. I bought it for gigs that I don't want to take my Gibson to. I wasn't expecting it to be as nice as it is. Doesn't come with a case so be prepared to shell out for one. I don't think the previous owner ever had it set up so I had that done. To be expected in this price range. Even my Gibson 335 needed a setup when I bought it new, but that's a different complaint. Once set up, WOW! The pickups sound way better than I expected. I thought I'd want to swap them out when I first purchased it. After playing it for a while I'm not so sure it's necessary. It's a quality instrument and I have no complaints.

This is a great guitar!

If you have a problem with this guitar its because youre a headstock snob. I bought an Epiphone Hummingbird a while back and decided to give this one a go and I am glad I did. I have Fenders, Gibsons, Martins, you name i have it or had it. This guitar is up there with all of them.Epiphone is making a real quality product! This guitar is well made, the color is unique and beautiful and it sounds great. I plugged it into fender pro reverb amp and its bliss. Vintage tone semi hollow body tone. The only difference I can tell from my Gibson ES 335 is the fretboard but the Indian Laurel is fine with me. I always have had great service with Musiciansfriend. Solid pickups, nice hardware, cool looking, block inlays, great axe!

a very sweet guitar
26 March 2023

I have 15 guitars and this is definitely one of the nicest. its very light compared to my les pauls and ash body strat, nicely balanced and the smaller body makes it much more comfortable than a 335. The tone is very warm and sweet but I use the les paul for the more hard rock stuff like zeppelin. She is a beautifully made top instrument stays in tune very well and absolutely gorgeous. The neck is a little thicker than my 60's les pauls and SG the 339 neck is more like a 58 or 59 les paul the fingerboard is a beautiful piece of rosewood with no machining marks and perfectly finished in Nitrocellulose lacquer. So far I've run it through a fender Deville, Orange half stack and a Vox ac15 with no feed back problems and it also sounds great DI into the recording console ... MoreI have 15 guitars and this is definitely one of the nicest. its very light compared to my les pauls and ash body strat, nicely balanced and the smaller body makes it much more comfortable than a 335.
