Best Option for 11x17 paper size and scan bed.

Review for WF 7840 - I considered going with a different brand printer this time around because I wanted a laser printer thinking that the colors would be more vibrant. I think with new developments the ink jets have come a ways. So I stayed with an Epson because I can't get all of the other options that these Epson printers have in another printer. And certainly not for this price. I could only find one and it was around $600.00 more. I had a WF 7620 the last time. It worked well for maybe 6 years but then slowly I felt the print quality decreased and then I lost the colors completely till it would only print black. It still runs fine otherwise so I gave it to my son. Hey maybe it could be fixed but I wanted better color print quality anyway. I was a little concerned how this WF 7840 would print from a Windows 7 PC. I have a newer Windows with the laptop I use in my upstairs office. I had to putter with it some but then I shut the main PC off and rebooted and it works great. What I love even more is that the old printer ceased to pick up the wireless network from my upstairs laptop but this new one picks it up fine. This is actually the 3rd Epson printer that I've had. I choose them because they do seem to at least run for a number of years AND I have to have the 11 x 17 paper size option for my draft work. An extra plus is that the scan bed is also 11 x 17 which most other printers that print 11 x 17 have only an 8.5 x 11 size scan bed. The black printing is very crisp. I haven't tried printing anything colorful yet. It will be interesting to see how things come out.

It does not like to scan from the panel. From time to time, it forces you to use the scan app from your PC or your mobile device. This is not always convenient (even in a home-office). The periodic software updates also send it into a frenzy. Unfortunately, I find myself uninstalling and reinstalling the entire printer every other month. I'm not a fan of HPs subscription-based ink program but dealing with this will ensure my return to HP when it dies. Epson could really take this printer to the next level if they could have incorporated the framework from the old KODAK printer series. R&D Missed something here. First, one of the footpads was missing, which meant that I have cardboard under one corner of the machine so it is level. Which is vital, as the lower paper tray won’t open if there is not proper clearance. Second, I had a lot of trouble connecting to my network bia WiFi. I ended up having to connect through my phone, then adding again (as a new device) through my network. Third, when I called Epson, because the scanner was not visible through the network, the CSR gave me incorrect information and insisted that the ADF did not support 2-sided scanning (it does). She insisted that Epson no longer allowed scanning through the Apple printer/scanner network. In the end, I called Apple, and was able to set everything up properly. BUT, basically, you cannot set up the printer automatically, as the scanner driver does not actually download or install if you use the “Wizard” set-up. You have to download the scanner driver and utility manually at the Epson website. Oh, and she was pushing me to buy an extended warranty. Not cool. After the very disappointing CSR interaction with Epson, I didn’t even bother to complain about the missing footpad. The quality is fine—I was upgrading from the WF-7720, and I guess it is a little faster, with no loss of quality. And it seems a little quieter when NOT on quiet mode. Overall, it’s a good all-in-one with 11x17 paper tray capabilities.

Epson WorkForce Pro WF-7840 Review After some deep diving and budgetary negotiations with myself, I decided to never go to a print shop again (well, not as often, at least). I’m a working artist and teacher, and in an average year, take part in 1 - 3 art markets, to sell prints of my illustrations and paintings. The balance between hand made prints (those being block or screen prints) and ‘digital prints’ (reproductions of watercolor, gouache, or acrylic paintings) is split down the middle. I’ve tried ordering prints through online revives but had a few too many bad experiences wherein the prints didn’t match their proofs or the shipping was too expensive, and started going to local print shops, first in Chicago, and later in the Kansas City area. In the end, I made peace with the idea that Kinko’s (later Office Depot) prints were just barely good enough, and very convenient, though visiting the shops and arguing with the clerks was torture, and quite expensive per wide format prints (11 by 14, my preferred size). Long story short, I did a lot of reading and ordered the Epson WF 7820. According to my research this review should be applicable to the WF 7840 as well, as paper capacity seems to be the only difference (that and about $100). Unless my life takes a sudden turn, I won’t ever miss having that extra 250 page capacity that comes with the extra number in the ‘tens place’ of the model number. SO many reviews had me steamed and anxious upon my order, in particular those either informing, or griping (or plain freaking out) about the ‘initial’ ink load that comes packed in with the printer. No argument on the point that the ink (812) cartridges are not cheap... but packed in ‘priming’ cartridges that come with the printer have supplied me with enough ink to have printed between 20 and 30 ‘fine’ (super high) quality 11” by 17” full color prints, and they are reporting (status) to be more than half full. I know from my research that some people were ‘locked out’ by the printer after a test print. One assumption I can gather: I did a firmware update before installing anything... perhaps Epson has responded to the level of outrage (and rightful outrage in my opinion) that has come their way due to the misleading (in other cases) information on the box regarding ‘excess ink being free to print with’. As mentioned above (but worth repeating) I got through more than 20 high resolution full color prints before I had to replace a single ink cartridge. *in the printer features drop down (mac) I am using the setting ‘fine’ rather than ‘best quality’. They somehow have them mixed up in the UI - side by side the ‘fine’ prints are vastly superior in color brightness/saturation and print quality. The printing size versatility (from 4 x 6 all the way up to 13 x17) is fantastic. When you load paper into the paper tray (I keep regular 8.5 x 11 paper in the cassette) the printer prompts you to set the size and type on the VERY intuitive and useful screen/interface. I’ve fed a lot of card stock, vellum, Bristol and light weight water color paper grouch the paper tray, and had no issues or jams. When I THOUGHT it was jammed, it was just me being uneducated about the very slow printing speed of very high resolution documents (art or photo prints). After using the printer for about 3 weeks, I bought photo paper. The printer takes AGES to print photos at a very high resolution, but the 4” by 6” borderless print that came out first looks like it’s straight from the photo lab. I was amazed at the quality, even having run through nearly 50 large format art prints by now. For the finest settings (and beautiful product) this puppy gets through some INK! As I am using the printer almost exclusively for art prints and photos, it’s sure to be more ‘thirsty’ than standard use. But the price tag of the ink cartridges is a bit hard to fall in love with. I wish buying direct from Epson had any perk at all (the prices are a few cents cheaper than retail). Jus to give a sense of the consumption, I’m at 50-60 color prints, some 8.5 x 11, most 11 x 17, and a few photo prints. I have now replaced magenta and yellow, and blue looks to be next. A quick work on the scanner: fantastic, super high resolution settings aren’t just fluff - I have rescanned original artwork that I have been printing and selling for about two years. The new scans produce much better prints than my previous (totally fine until I knew better) working files.

I'm so happy I decided to buy this printer!!! it's awesome! I actually bought it because I needed a large format scanner (which works really well) plus printing has been a dream. Installed on Windows 11. (1) Very easy to set-up and install (I chose network/wifi set-up). Note: It does take time for the printer to configure (about 20 minutes)--so don't do it when you're in a hurry or stressed. I followed the easy instructions, downloaded the latest drivers and everything went smoothly. It's been working flawlessly, since. (2) Beautiful prints and very fast. (Not the quietest, but who cares.) (3) Easily prints envelopes, cardstock and special sizes--I just use the tray in back and use auto select. (4) If a paper is in auto select tray--the printer will recognize paper and size. No need to change settings. Printer will ask you to confirm on the first print. (5) Difference between the 7820 and 7840 is paper tray capacity. 7840 holds more, so it's taller. I chose the 7820. (6) It's large. 20 wide x 11 tall x 18 deep. You'll need an extra 4.5" to use the tray in back. Cover can stay close. Simply flip back to use. Tray in front can also stay close. It will automatically open and slide out whenever you print, to accomodate up to tabloid size prints. (Love this.) I just manually slide it close when I'm done printing. (Printer can sit on 22" wide surface.) (7) Comes with enough ink to last a while (depending on how much you print and what type of prints.) *For peeps complaining ink doesn't last--all ink jet printers must be used consistently, or the ink will dry out and ink nozzles can clog. (8) Can print from mobile devices or remote print. I haven't used that feature yet. So can't comment. I work from home and also print graphics--this printer does both very well.

I purchased this WF-7820 to replace a 9 year old WF-7510 that decided that it wanted to retire and take on the functions of a boat anchor but I doubt that it will qualify. I am not a heavy volume user but so far I have found this printer to do all that I need it to do. I especially like the back feeder tray. A main drawback of the 7510 was you could not feed a single sheet for printing without removing and loading it in the main paper tray. I primarily use 8 1/2 x 11 paper but sometimes need legal or 11x17. The back tray makes it very easy to run a single sheet in the printer without having to remove the main paper tray. Another thing that I like about this printer is the automatic paper catch tray, which automatically comes out when the printer starts to print a page. I can't count the number of times that I forgot to pull out the paper catch tray on the 7510 before I started to printing. One thing that was not highlighted in the literature, you will need at least 10 -11 inch clearance behind the printer to fully extend the back paper tray. It was easy to set up with both wireless and USB connections. I have only had the printer for a month but so far I am very pleased with it.

Most unreliable (wired) connection ever seen

Do yourself a favor, read this whole review. NEVER BUY THIS UNIT. Within a couple of months, Epson had to send me a (used) replacement because mine (printer software) locked up irreversibly. Before it locked up, it would constantly drop its connection to the computer. The replacement has been doing the same thing. This unit has so much mechanical movement every time it's restarted that I'm convinced the internal parts will wear out prematurely because of so many restarts. They get more motion from restarts than they will ever get from printing or scanning. This is an overcomplicated, underperforming, unreliable, unstable piece of junk. I've never regretted a purchase more than I've regretted this one. Shame on BestBuy for selling this kind of China-made garbage. Worst all-in-one I've ever used. I've been suffering with this thing for abotu 2 years!!! No thanks to Epson. They will get another earful from me when I have the time to deal with their user-unfriendly tech line. They make it very difficult to navigate to an actual human being. I wish I could have rated it with a zero stars.

My Best Printer Ever
6 May 2022

This is my first Epson printer. I'm very pleased with it. To be honest, it's more printer than I really needed for general home use, but I'm glad I got it now that I have it. I wanted double-sided printing and double-sided scanning, and it does both flawlessly. Its print quality is impressive, especially compared to its replaced printer (whose prominent two-letter-name manufacturer shall remain nameless). I scanned some old family photo prints, and the image quality was remarkable. The available Epson application software made it exceptionally easy to do. Its display and control panel is large and intuitive, but most operations can be done from its host (possibly wirelessly connected) computer with the available application software. Its display and control panel is large and intuitive, but most operations can be done from its host (possibly wirelessly connected) computer with the available application software. I read comments before getting it that its method of handling double-sided scanning was cumbersome, but I have no problem with the speed and accuracy of its scanning function, and, when printing, it cranks out prints very quickly. There are probably applications I have yet to explore, but so far, I'm delighted. I'd highly recommend it for those who have the space (it's big) and the funds (it's a bit expensive) for general home use. It will handle oversized paper, but even that's pretty expensive - and apparently hard to find right now. I may get some to have on hand for the rare occasions when I need something larger than 8.5 X 11. It's reassuring to know that I can do that if I need to. I'm glad my local Best Buy associate steered me to it.

Nearly Perfect Color Matching
21 May 2022

I'm very excited about this printer, so far! 5 stars for fantastic color matching (see photo), speed, and the wide range of print sizes it offers. Minus one star for somewhat unclear error messaging and imperfect photocopying. For instance, when I put 13 x 19 paper into the rear feeder and selected A3+, the printer was happy, but when I added a slightly smaller document onto the flatbed scanner and pressed "copy," it kicked back an error saying I can't copy to that paper size. After fumbling around to figure out why my large-format printer was saying it can't print on large format paper, I finally digitally changed the paper size to A3 (keeping the original oversized paper in the feeder), and it worked fine. After fumbling around to figure out why my large-format printer was saying it can't print on large format paper, I finally digitally changed the paper size to A3 (keeping the original oversized paper in the feeder), and it worked fine. I'm docking the score because it was an unnecessary and confusing error that wasted time. I've also had trouble enlarging standard copies (enlarging a business card onto 8.5x11). The option to enlarge is always greyed out, so I'm not sure what the trick is there. I'll read the instructions eventually, but something as simple as enlarging a copy shouldn't require it. One major bonus: I'm very happy with the ink cartridge yield! I've printed 20-30 color and B&W documents over the past few weeks, then printed the large-format full-color doc in the attached photo--all from the original cartridges that came with the printer. I still haven't seen a low-ink warning, even after the full-color copy, so I'm very impressed there. Regarding the attached photo: The original is a folded poster that came with an oversized puzzle. It's printed on very thin paper, so it's starting to tear and wrinkle. For preservation, I copied it onto Epson's A3+ Matte Premium Presentation paper, and as you can see, the color match is nearly perfect! Certain sections of the print are somewhat blurry (see the lower left 1/6th), which I'm assuming is because the original image is folded into 6 sections and that corner probably didn't lay flat against the glass. Maybe in the next version, the printer's foam backing needs to be a few millimeters thicker to compensate for damaged originals. However, note that not one of the wrinkles showed up on the copy. Nice! Overall, I'm very glad I bought this printer. It's going to be lifesaver for printing client proofs before sending to the packaging printer.

WF-7840
13 November 2022

My previous printer died about 3 weeks ago as the printer could not recognize one of the ink cartridges. I tried all of the resolutions I could find online and none worked except to have it repaired and that would cost as much as a new printer (in my price range of $400). So I started looking at all the printers that fit my requirements (e.g., all-in-one, able to print 13x19 photos). It took me about 6 days to look at all of the brands, all of the reviews and whether they met my requirements. The only one was the Epson WF-7840. I will be using this printer mainly for my hobby of taking pictures and printing them. The only negatives aspects were (1) I print many 13x19 photos and they would not print borderless and had a very small white border. I will be using this printer mainly for my hobby of taking pictures and printing them. The only negatives aspects were (1) I print many 13x19 photos and they would not print borderless and had a very small white border. I called Epson and talked to a tech (for over an hour) and eventually he found out this printer could not print 13x19 without that border. I can live with that. (2) It took me a while to understand the display options on the printer and how to set the proper options for different sizes and different paper (photo vs. non-photo). (3) Finally, when wanting to feed paper through one of the 2 paper trays, it only had one option that could be set for a paper tray and I could not figure out how it knew which tray I wanted to use. Once you insert the paper in one of the all-in-one trays, the printer recognizes which tray has paper and uses the options you set for the tray for that print. All of these negative items were ones I overcame with learning how to use the options and accepting the border on the 13x19 prints. Here are a couple of my photos from near Yellowstone Park and my wife's rose garden.
