My granddaughter, 6 years old, discovered drawing with sidewalk chalk on paper allowed her to (somewhat) blend the colors. When told about pastels , she couldn't wait to try them out. She says they are "much better than chalk" and has made some lovely under-ocean and sunset sky pictures. This student set is perfect for her- offering an opportunity to try quite a few colors without buying more than she needs.

As a soft pastel, it's got a strong opaque pigment that works well on charcoal and pastel paper. It blends nicely and works well with other soft pastels and pastel pencils.The only setback is you can't buy individual pastels, so replacing a pastel will likely mean replacing the whole set.

Lovely soft pastels--very good pigmentation. These pastels do not break as easy as some other brands I have, yet, they are soft enough to make "painterly" effects. I always keep a large count of these alongside my more expensive soft pastels. The square shape is also desirable for me to make lines and other marks. I highly recommend these.

The coloured chalks arrived all dirty with black and consequently when you use them they stain
ALL pastels including Faber-Castel pastels will require good pastel paper. When using these pastels the vibrancy comes out on LuxArchival paper extremely well as well as Pastel Mat. Do not hesitate to by these pastels.
A great selection of colours including the range needed for portraits, skin colours, shadows etc. Very easy to handle and do not crumble. Square shape gives excellent control and ability to define edges. Excellent value for money and delivery was as advertised.
I like this set for field and travel. I recommend it to students, so they can see if they like the media before spending a lot. The colours are attractive and vibrant, and they lay down well. The only downside is that they are not lightfast, and will fade after a few months to a year. But I don't mind that, I just take a photo of anything that turns out a keeper. The box is nice too, and I refill it with chunks of other pastels as needed, which is also a nice way for students to ease into better quality, as they always use up their favorite colors first.
These pastels are soft but the colors are fantastic, none were broken and great packaging
In my opinion these are a hard pastel. I did not care for them. If you're looking for an inexpensive pastel I recommend the Mungyo Gallery, they are nice pastels. Wouldn't buy again.
I bought these to complete a portrait commission, and was debating whether to get this set or the artist quality set. I went with the studio quality, since it is significantly cheaper, and was not disappointed. I do not often use chalk pastel, so I cannot speak to the quality of these in comparison with the professional quality pastels or pastels of other brands, but I have found Faber-Castell to produce consistently quality supplies. These pastels performed very well for what I needed.
