Nice mix of features, size of buttons and display, backlight is great for dark spaces. I have used many brands of meters over the years and I always come back to Fluke for the ruggedness and reliability. They have a quality feel to their products that make them stand out vs other brands that feel cheap.

Good meter overall, accurate and easy to use. Backlight is great. However, the screw that holds the battery door isn't permanently attached. HVAC work frequenly involves outdoor use, in the grass. Goodbye screw! Cheap children's toys have solved this problem by using screws that won't come disconnected from the battery door. Battery door also won't snap shut without the screw in place, rendering the meter useless. To add insult to injury, the screw size isn't in the specifications of the user manual, so you can't easily replace a lost screw. Unacceptable for a tool in this price range.

If you are looking for a real instrument you know FLUKE handhelds are the best. But, do you need the high end ones or a basic one? I chose the 116 as the somewhat in between choice because the specs are more than awesome for accurately measuring anything in the normal homeowner world (AC Line Voltages, DC) and has a temperature probe function that is useful for checking my boiler system temperatures/piping/fins/etc.

I purchased this multimeter a number of months ago. I am an engineer and work on boats so I have used many multimeters over the years by many manufacturers. However this is the best! Simple to use, rugged and has outstanding features such as a large screen, auto display hold, good DC accuracy and very important for marine use, it measures micro amps. In addition, on many marine auxiliary generators, you set the AC voltage frequency by tuning the RPM of the diesel engine. Since the Fluke 116 measures frequency, that is easily done.
I am a commercial HVAC controls technician/programmer. This is a great meter for startup/checkout and troubleshooting. The features I use most are AC/DC voltage testing and the ohms (buzzer) tester to check for continuity. The TL175 test leads that came with it are top quality as well as the 116 meter. I ordered the AC175 alligator clips separately to use with the TL175 test leads. There are a variety of accessories that can be used with this meter. The main thing is, when using a meter, you want one that you trust your life with and I have all confidence with the Fluke 116.
This is nice because is has a backlight and top side probe connections. True RMS feature may also come in handy. My understanding based on its spec sheet and talking to Tequipment and Fluke technical support is that the temperature accuracy is 1% =/-18 (i.e. 1% /- 1.8 degrees F., since resolution is 0.1 deg. F, the 18 translates to 18 times 0.1. So, at 100 degrees., you have an accuracy of -/1 2.8 deg. F. at 32 degrees, =/-2.12 deg. F. Since this is marketed to HVAC people and temperature is important, this degree of accuracy is outside the boundaries of what I would like as a customer. I purchased it to replace a Fluke 16.The old Fluke 16 I was trying to replace (good meter, providing it to other staff joining me) has an accuracy of =/-1% 1.5 deg. This was slightly better, but still outside what I wanted it to be. Thus we purchased the new one, expecting it to be better (hopefully) in the area of temperature measurement. It is not. It has been sitting in my spare tool bag for the most part. We break it out once in awhile, but the Fluke 16 has a nice feature where there are not as many rotary dial settings, meaning we don't have to switch it back and forth so much to do our work.I expect it to last a long time, even in heavy use. Well made and it does meet the spec for temp. measurement advertised. Just don't expect great accuracy for HVAC work.
Firstly I should say that I bought this product because I needed a DMM for my engineering class. Having worked exclusively with a rather expensive array of Fluke products at my job before I quit to go back to school, the choice of brand was an easy one, even though it was three times more expensive than the model that I will be buying tomorrow. My problem with this product is the current measurement range. It does not say anywhere on the packaging (which I feverishly and enthusiastically destroyed as soon as I got home, preventing me from being able to return it) what the upper limit is and I had no idea that an instrument even existed with a range limit measured in micro amps. I do realize this is an oversight on my part but I did read the packaging, looking ... MoreFirstly I should say that I bought this product because I needed a DMM for my engineering class. It does not say anywhere on the packaging (which I feverishly and enthusiastically destroyed as soon as I got home, preventing me from being able to return it) what the upper limit is and I had no idea that an instrument even existed with a range limit measured in micro amps. I do realize this is an oversight on my part but I did read the packaging, looking specifically for current range. I did not notice the u in front of the A on the dial until I got home. I am quite disappointed that I now have to buy a cheap DMM to take to class with me next week. The packaging for this product should contain the current range next to the voltage range, in my opinion. If I had the money, I would go back and buy another model with a higher current range but I am on a fairly tight budget so I will not be buying another fluke any time soon.I do believe you make excellent products and I was looking forward to flaunting all of my fluke gear in class so I thought you guys should know that I will not be flaunting your products all over the engineering department, instead, it will sit in my closet, unused until the end of time. I am not going to sell it on e-bay or anything because it is my only fluke and I will not part with it, even though I will not be using it, I am just weird like that I suppose.
The quality and reliability I expected were there. Fluke did not disappoint with the F116. Worked correctly with the i400e AC accessory clamp. Easy to use, convenient back light button. Its temperature reading was quite good, too, compared with other thermometers. See the 3rd photo: 31.3, 31.4, 31.7. For household and general use this is ok by me. Test leads were not very flexible though. This unit was made in Malaysia.
I HAVE USED THIS MULTIMETER FOR THE LAST 6 YEARS AS AN HVAC/R SERVICE TECHNICIAN. YOU CANT GO WRONG WHEN YOU PURCHASE FLUKE. THIS METER HAS BEEN THROUGH HELL AND BACK AND STILL WORKS LIKE A CHAMP. FROM 150F+ ATTICS TO A SOLID WEEK OF SOME OF OKLAHOMA'S COLDEST COLD SNAP IN FEB. OF 2021, IT DIDNT MISS A BEAT!
I have used a lot of Fluke meters as a field service tech. Recently bought this one and love the size and features, but was disappointed that the screen is not as clear and bold as others. It washes out when viewed from above even by a slight angle. Fluke should address this, especially since many lower costing meters have much better displays.
