All around great meter. The probes and clips are not quite small enough for all applications but they have smaller probes and clips available. The Good: Highly reliable. Great protection. High quality fuses. Good meaty controls. Accurate. Professional, American Made. Lifetime (10 year plus) warranty. The Bad: Case a little small and would be nice if it had a belt loop. Have to disassemble to access fuses. Temperature probe does not go to high temperatures. The Ugly: Price is an ouch if your on the hobbyist level and lifetime warranty is defined as 10 years after unit has been discontinued.Recommended for: Professional use. Hobbyist who like good quality tools. Electricians. Developers. MakersNot Recommended for: Anyone who is dabbling or looking for a first ... MoreAll around great meter. fluke 87 meters are reliable and accurate I've used other brand meters in the past and would always get false readings with hertz, and ohms. I purchased my first fluke 87 about 12 yrs. ago and it is still as acurate as the newest one I got about 2 yrs. ago. The options that are available really help you when your in some deep troubleshooting on generators, control panels, switchgears, and electrcal systems on engines.

The Fluke 87 series has been the benchmark for handheld meters for over 30 years. I remember when my father got an 87 in the 90s....he upgraded to an 87V about 15 years later. He'd still have the 87 if he hadn't loaned it out.I keep my 87V in my work bag. It's used on everything from common household electrical tasks, troubleshooting electronics, automotive troubleshooting, all the way to MCC and 2000 amp 480v 3p panels. I own a lot of meters, and a lot of Flukes. This is the one I trust my life with.Read the directions. Understand how meters work. This meter will not fail you.

I am a field service representative and have recently transitioned into program management. I believe this is the most versatile meter on the market today. I specifically like the accuracy and its ability to display peak recording of volts/amps fluctuations. This feature is a tremendous aid in troubleshooting sensitive aircraft systems. I recommend the 87V/E2 kit to all of my field reps.
Fluke makes the best multimeters in the world (that I'm aware of) so don't trust your life to some off the wall junk. And don't use a table lamp to verify the circuit is open. I haven't had an opportunity to use the temperature probe or use it on any DC applications. But I've used it around the house and I'm confident I won't be a conductor going to ground. And it can handle up to 1000 volts so there are virtually no scenarios where I can kill myself with it on the applications for which I will be using it. The magnetic clip is a nice touch too. It makes it really convenient when your hands are full.
I purchased this as an upgrade from my less expensive meters and I have been very impressed so far with this product, but then it is Fluke brand and everything I have purchase that is Fluke brand always performs as expected and then some.So far I have used the temperature abilities to check a new refrigerator/freezer for proper temperature before loading it up with food. I also used it on a recent trip to check the in-room refrigerator and it is good I did. The room fridge was running between 52 and 56 degrees. My wife had placed a salad in the fridge for lunch the following day and it would have spoiled at that high of a temperature. Luckily I had a cooler with Ice as well to keep her salad fresh. I have compared the temperature readings from the Fluke 87V meter to my Kestrel weather meters and various NIST certified thermometers and it is dead on.I have used this to test AC and DC and it worked as expected and surprisingly compared to my less expensive off brand meters, showed exactly the same readings (just to make sure I compared a number of meters and all gave the same readings).I also purchased the AC Current clamp and have used it as well along with some additional test leads as the ones that come with this meter are great, but there are none with long exposed leads to get into deep recessed connectors.I expect this meter to last as long as I need a meter and am very impressed with its feature set and flexability and am also glad to know that my less expensive meters are still functioning well and will be good backups and bottom of the toolbox items now.Great product with a great feature set if you are willing to pay the money. It does the job of a few different meters/tools and if you add up the seperate price of all the others it would probably be just slightly more in one product. Size is great and comes with some excellent accessories as well. There are some excellent videos on the web on uses and tons of add on accessories as well.
I'd like to give it 5 stars and I would but the case is lousy. The multimeter is great. Precise, easy to use and very well made. Maybe this seems petty, but if I were an electrician or someone who needed to use this every day, I'd toss the case and get something else. Fluke really went cheap on this case. It's too small and the pocket for the wires and leads is no good. Everything falls out when you try to take one thing out and the wires get tangled up. Very annoying. Had it been a little bigger with rigid pockets for the accessories that would have been better. And I would have been willing to pay more for it.
It is very likely you will never use all of the features of this thing, as it has something for everyone. A workhorse if their ever was one, it is easy to use, boots fast, and carries all of the quality and durability you'd expect from a Fluke. The pouch is all black, not like the photo. I do recommend getting the leads with the adjustable shroud as these leads only expose the very tip. They work great for nearly every application, but the twistguard shrouded leads are better for home use for testing outlets and such.
I purchased the 87-V/E2 kit about 4 months ago and I couldn't have made a better investment. This is my first "grown-up" meter and I hope that it will help me out on projects for many years to come. The 87-V itself is a very solid meter; the quality of the materials is top-notch. With the kit, you get a nifty case, a magnet strap, and some extra probes, which are a nice addition for the price. The aligator probes are especially nice for hard-to-hold pieces. The probes have interchangeable ends, which is a plus becuase you can carry it all in the case without wrapping up a bunch of leads. It has just about every feature you would need for basic industrial stuff (which is what I do) and for stuff around the house. They are only 4mm long, so if you need to get into something deeper, you'll have to get another set of probes.Overall this kit is a very nice additional to your arsenal, whether seasoned or novice.
I'm currently a machinist, but have, in the past installed car audio, car alarms, and remote starters, as well as trailer wiring with and without electric brake controllers. I still do this on the side, and for friends. I wanted a DMM that would do whatever I may encounter from duty cycles of actuators to checking continuity, mili volt outputs of certain brake controllers, as well as charging system voltages of 12vdc electrical systems. The Fluke 87-v is a beast! It will do all that and more, accuracy and durability were my top priorities. If you do any type of electrical or electronics work, you cannot go wrong with this meter. Sure it's a little pricey, but you get what you pay for. Buy quality the first time and be done with it.
