A very inexpensive entry into the world of Focal

Beautiful sounding headphones. A solid low end with a nice midrange and pretty good soundstage for a closed back phone. The highs sound good to me but at 66 years old and my twenties working lots of rock concerts my hearing starts taking a serious nosedive at around 8Khz. These are also very comfortable for long listening sessions. I don?t like the choice of light gray microfiber for the headband inner material but I bought a knit snap on cover so my head doesn?t turn it greasy looking. I also don?t really like the stock cable but that a quick fix from China away. It also comes with a nice fitted travel case that I probably won?t use as I use wireless headphones ?? for travel. At this price these were a steal!

Just got the first pair of Focal branded headphones and I have to say for the price paid, the build quality is superb. As for the sound, being closed back headphones, I was expecting a bit more bass but it seems focal tuned these to prioritize soundstage (which is excellent for a pair of closed cans) instead. I've running these through my Centrance DacMini CX, Ultrasone Panther, and my Questyle QP1R DAP and it seems to play well with all of the aforementioned sources whether they'd be HD FLAC, DSD, or just spotify outputting to JRIVER Media Center. The recommended equalizer settings provided by audioscience enhances the sound signature somewhat using JRIVER's DSP Studio but I find it more than acceptable via other sources without these tweaks. I am ok with it but haven't put these cans through the paces with a proper burn in. For the price I paid, I'd say its a very good - excellent buy for audiophile headphones.

The Focal Elegia is a great set for under 600 USD. I would give it a 4 star if the price was above 600 USD due to the minor discolouration on the black plastic near the connector port. In my opinion this set competes with a lot of open back under 1000 and is the best closed back I heard. Drums hit hard and with impact in most of the rock songs in my playlist (for some unknown reasons drum in certain songs just lack slam). Vocal and strings are in your face(almost like Sennheiser 6X0 series). so in most acoustic track you will have the impression that the artist is singing and playing the guitar at the same times although it might be far from true. Treble is relax but still maintain clarity although not to the point of the Hifiman Ananda which has best detail in my ... MoreThe Focal Elegia is a great set for under 600 USD. Soundstage is wide for a closed back although with the wonkyness of the string and vocal which i quite enjoy due to the genre in my library. If you ever want a closed back with great dynamics and craftsmanship to kick back and chill out to after work, the focal elegia is a no brainer.

Focal Sound
9 May 2023

The Elegia have the Focal sound. I found that they benefit significantly by breaking them in. On initial opening, they were very flat and kind of papery sounding. After breaking them in a good ten hours, they have the expected Focal sound. It did improve some more after another ten to twenty hours of breaking using pink noise.Comparing to Stellia's, they don't have as much sound sound stage. A little more low emphasis. If you can get on sale, excellent deal. Was able to run off my phone well. They sound better with more power such as from portable or desktop headphone amp or amp/DAC.

Good Isolation, Sound not as Good

I bought these for my work system, Marantz CD5003 and Schiit Magni connected by Kimber PBJ, both plugged into a schlock power strip. I had been using the Grado SR125X for music, and they sound quite good in this system but offer poor isolation from sounds made from other workers, plus I was concerned about sound leaking from them and perhaps bothering others. The Focal Elegias are noticeably less open sounding, and the mids are rather colored. Trying to decide what was going on, I brought my Sennheiser HD600s from home as a comparison, and in the grand scheme of things, they sound relatively similar to the Grados, nothing like the Elegias. The latter are frankly not enjoyable enough to listen to music with in this system, so I've brought in audio books on CD to ... MoreI bought these for my work system, Marantz CD5003 and Schiit Magni connected by Kimber PBJ, both plugged into a schlock power strip. They work well for that and do have the isolation I was looking for to begin with. The Elegias may be revealing system flaws the other two sets of phones are not or are simply not well matched here.

Amazing set of headphones. You'll want to upgrade the stock cable and if you want more bass, you'll want to upgrade the ear pads...but if you hook this up to a good DAC and amp, you're going to have a good time. While it doesn't technically need an amp, one can definitely help ensure it gets a good consistent signal. I use a tube amp and really enjoy how that helps the character of these very dynamic and energetic cans. I enjoyed a hybrid tube amp over a solid state, but on the go I'll use a FiiO BTR5 which works nicely with these.Note that these are closed back, but will leak some sound. I would consider them almost semi-open. You should be ok at lower volumes and beyond 6 feet or so...but if someone is sitting next to you, they likely will hear something from ... MoreAmazing set of headphones. Never a Bad Choice
6 December 2022

I was looking to jump from higher quality headphones (SEVGA, Fostex, V-Moda, etc ) to high end ones, but with price tags ranging form $400 to $2000 plus, it's hard to commit. So I was so nervous about these. And I absolutely love them.Other people will get into specifics much better than I can, so I will say that these headphones work for every type of sound. The highs are high, lows are low, and everything is incredibly clear. Closed back means I can wear them at work. Orchestral, rock, jazz; all sound amazing. At this price point, it's hard to say which headphones are best for you. Different levels and signatures appeal to different people. I consider this point 0 though, good for everything and impossible to regret.

Having considered and demo’d manh headphones over a long period I finally settled on these. Near half price made inviting and when reading reviews a large consensus suggested really needed EQ to be at best. I went to Middlesbrough Branch armed with MacBook with EQ software primed and Chris Mojo DAC charged for a demo. Speculation about getting the best was true and from a very flat boxy sound transformed to a stunning sound using specific EQ options dedicate to the Elegia. After 2 weeks of use I have settled with the Oratary1990 Elegia preset and they just sparkle. I have also since up graded to the Dekoni Elite sheepskin ear pads and they not only offer increased comfort but superior sound to the stock pads. Pros: great fit and finish, case, sound quality, looks. They look, feel, and sound like $900 headphones. They have a generally balanced sound with good bass, mids, treble. Generally not too bright, not a V curve. Very detailed and fast sounding. Pads are thick and comfortable and ears don't touch anything.Cons: Without EQ, there are some peaks in the mids and low treble that can get a bit fatiguing after a while and even sound a bit shouty on certain songs. For a "closed" headphone they leak a lot of sound and don't isolate external sound much at all. They are comfortable at first but the clamp force is high and they get uncomfortable for me after an hour or so. The included cable is terrible - it is stiff and has permanent kinks that don't go away. I really can't ... MorePros: great fit and finish, case, sound quality, looks. Solid for sound designers

Didn?t know what to expect with these and was pleasantly surprised. The quality is maybe a bit beyond what I was expecting.. these things are about as nicely constructed as can be. Sound-wise they?re an interesting listen.. seem pretty good for my needs which is mainly sound design and production work but for some listeners it might feel that the music is a bit distant or quiet compared to boomier more in your face headphones. To do that with these you?d have to turn them up and you probably wouldn?t be able to take that for long. Very comfy and decent weight given the materials on offer.. should be ok to wear for a few hours here and there. Only negative is the cable that came with them is too short.. about 3ft.. so I?ll need to purchase a desperate one.
