Focal Elegia Closed-Back Dynamic Headphones

$627.59

(430 reviews)

To enjoy an incredible listening experience in total privacy, without worrying about a noisy environment disturbing this moment of pleasure, this is the promise made and kept by Elegia. In these high-end circum-aural closed-back headphones, Focal has combined the best of the skilfully created technologies, developed and assembled in the workshops in France. Elegia incorporates a new generation of exclusive full-range speaker drivers capable of operating in a small inner environment while ensuring exceptional dynamics and the most precise sound reproduction. Whether it’s the motor, the frameless copper voice coil, the dedicated 110-micron surround, or the “M”-shape inverted dome, Elegia's speaker drivers are a mass of innovation dedicated to sound purity. When connected to portable audio players, these headphones are incredibly high-performing. Zero resonance and excellent soundproofing ensure that the naturalness and realism of the sound is striking from the first few seconds of listening. Loading a speaker driver into a small room makes it extremely sensitive to its environment. The engineers’ 40 years of expertise and know-how led to specific work being undertaken on the vents to avoid limiting the frequency response in the low range and thus properly manage the airflow. With Elegia, there is no resonance to disturb the listening experience, and the closed earpads round off the remarkable soundproofing. With its well-mastered geometry, Elegia's headband moulds perfectly to the head, providing optimal grip for on-the-go use. The 20mm memory foam microfibre earpads, as well as the yoke that also moulds perfectly to the wearer’s face shape, are both key contributors to the headphones’ supreme comfort. They are also incredibly good-looking, with noble materials such as leather, solid aluminium, and microfibre finishing off Elegia to a tee.

These headphones are excellent for the price, for 899, which was the original price, I am not sure if they're worth that much, but definitely worth what I paid for them, still breaking them in, not at their best yet, so my opinion on value may change, but very good performers, comfortable, not difficult to drive.Bass is a little light depending on the song, sub bass is excellent, could use a little more thump, but bass is clean and done very well, fast and smooth. The midrange is excellent, very smooth and clear, but does lack a little presence, in some songs the vocals are little too much in the background, hopefully with more burning in that will change if not will have to EQ. Treble is nice and smooth, could be a little sibilant at times, but doesn't bother me ... MoreThese headphones are excellent for the price, for 899, which was the original price, I am not sure if they're worth that much, but definitely worth what I paid for them, still breaking them in, not at their best yet, so my opinion on value may change, but very good performers, comfortable, not difficult to drive.Bass is a little light depending on the song, sub bass is excellent, could use a little more thump, but bass is clean and done very well, fast and smooth. Need a little more time to determine how much I like them, but these are definitely excellent headphones. Top tier for sure, the sound signature may not be for everyone, but if you enjoy Focal these are excellent for the price you pay. These do require some warming up before they are at their best. I know many people don't believe in burn but I did experience it with these, not all headphones are the same, but breaking them in won't change their personality, It definitely will make them better sounding for sure, I have about 26 hours and they definitely opened up, more clarity, better imaging, but if you don't like the sound signature to begin with, burning them in won't change your mind.

I am very pleased with the Focal Elegia's performance, comfort and aesthetics. My first reaction seeing them was that they're like a Mercedes Benz in headphone form. Not big distracting bass, but when it exists in the song it hits just enough to be noticed and simply doesn't exist when it isn't meant to, if that makes sense. Might be it too polite for some people, but I appreciate the natural timbre and non-fatiguing overall sound. Soundstage is open and instruments separate well. Resolution is also very good. I am glad i was able to pick these headphones up when they were on sale. I would not like them as much at full price. These are terrific close back headphones with great sound and feel. they are a little big, but i have have giant head so it doesn’t looks weird on me. Very V shaped but if using an EQ (software or hardware) it can be mitigated. glistening highs. booming and clean lows with just a touch of rumble. I still prefer my Hifiman Sundaras in sound quality, staging and range, but these are perfect when open-back simply will not do.

So.. how do they sound? Well, they are definitely going to demand your attention. Lots of punch, soundstage and clarity. Definitely fast enough for my tastes. A decent DAC will help, a quality recording will help some more, but you definitely won't need an amplifier. In short, 4.5 stars I love them, and can only imagine how to improve upon them

Effortless music

I did research on heaphones to replace my Audio-Technica ATH-M40X, which I've had for over 4 years. The reason I was looking for a replacement was because I had the chance to compare my M40X's to my latest open companions: the HifiMan Sundara. I realized that the M40X were quite V-shaped, and not particularly accurate, or aiming to be that. Don't get me wrong, they're great headphones, and the V-shaped signature certainly adds to the fun component, but I needed something closer to neutral, as I'm getting into music production. I also didn't want closed-back headphones with an emphasized bass response, as is usually the case with those types of headphones. I also didn't want closed-back headphones with an emphasized bass response, as is usually the case with those types of headphones. After months of watching tons of videos (I have no audiophile shops around me, and COVID wouldn't permit me to visit them anyways), listening to previews online, and looking at FR charts, I settled on these. Plus I'd told myself I'd want a pair of Focal headphones down the line. The Utopia is definitely still on my list as a potential upgrade to the Sundara in the future (though I may change my mind yet). I decided to look at either the Focal and the Dan Clark Audio Aeon 2 Closed. Reviews made me lean heavily towards the Elegia. I heard the Radiance are a great alternative to that, and are currently still offered by Focal, as the Elegia have been retired, but after much consideration, and a cursory search on Ebay, I determined that the Elegia are a great value at $450, price I got them for, versus $1200 for the Radiance with marginally "better" performance. I say "better" because I'm concerned the Radiance may "radiate" a tad too much warmth for me. I like a clean and punchy low end, a well-defined midrange, and a clear and airy high end without too much sharpness or air. I think I've found that in the Elegia... At least, until the itch catches me again, and the market presents me with a better value in headphones.

Factory cable inoperative
26 December 2022

The headphones are as excellent as I had hoped they would be. However the factory cable right side does not work. I tested the seating and made sure it was securely connected but it still didn’t work. I also switched to left side to verify and it wouldn’t work there either so I know that it is the cable that is defective. Thankfully I had another cable on hand but would really like to have a working factory cable.

Focal, amazing for the price
25 June 2023

The headphones themselves are amazing, they are performing above my expectations and I'm glad I bought them - the sound is incredible, and the price was rock bottom - so I'm going to give them a great rating. However the cable that came with them is less than desirable given the quality of the headphones themselves. Within a week, the cable started to fail, likely because it was not only short, but extremely stiff and rigid, which forced me to twist and turn the cable to straighten it out.

Not what I expected
15 January 2023

Having only owned Bose and Sony speakers in the 300 range I assumed headphones all sounded a certain way. These headphones have less bass and the vocals are crystal clear compared to traditional headphones. It sounds like i am at a concert. when i switch back to other headphones they sound so muted because my ear adapts. need to use it for some time to break them in and they sound amazing.

You can't go back

Audiophilia is a journey - sure - but it's a one-way trip - forward only. You can't go back. The Elegia is perfect proof of this. Within the first few hours - I had got the inkling that it would be years, if at all, before I'd pick up my other headphones. But just to be sure - I tore myself away from the immersive listening session I was in - and tried out some of the same tracks on the reigning favorite. And the difference was night and day. The Elegia sounds expansive, it brings out the tiniest detail, it's way more immersive. What also struck me was the tonal balance. As I now realize - had it not been for the Elegia - I would have lost out on many nuances of the music (Dr. Chesky Ultimate Headphone Demonstration Disc CD1).
